Apple is not abandoning China. It is building a China-centered network with more iPhone assembly in India and a broader supplier and assembly presence in Vietnam. China still provides the deepest manufacturing ecosystem and remains the key production hub; India is the fastest-growing alternative for iPhone assembly; and Vietnam is becoming an important base for suppliers and final assembly.
This is diversification for resilience, not a clean relocation. Apple’s own filings say that substantially all manufacturing is performed by outsourcing partners across China mainland, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam, while warning that a significant concentration remains with a small number of partners and, in some cases, single locations.

Is Apple moving production out of China?
Apple is moving some production and supplier activity beyond China, but the evidence supports a “China plus diversification” strategy rather than an exit. China retains the scale, engineering knowledge, logistics infrastructure and dense supplier network that Apple’s products require. India and Vietnam reduce dependence on one country, yet neither has been shown in public disclosures to replicate China’s complete ecosystem.

That warning matters because diversification is not simply a matter of moving a factory. A new location needs qualified suppliers, tooling, trained workers, process-control systems, testing capacity, transport links and reliable component flows. Apple can shift selected products or production stages, but rebuilding an entire regional ecosystem takes years.
China, India and Vietnam at a glance
| Country | Current role | Strategic value | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| China mainland | Apple’s key production hub, with mature manufacturing know-how and infrastructure. | Large-scale outsourcing relationships, dense supplier ecosystem and established logistics. | Concentration exposes Apple to trade restrictions, public-health shutdowns, political events and single-source failures. |
| India | Fast-growing iPhone assembly base; production of the iPhone 16 series in India was cited in 2024. | Geographic and geopolitical diversification for iPhone production, with a large domestic market and policy support. | Building deeper component localization, supplier depth, logistics and consistently high yields. |
| Vietnam | Expanding supplier and assembly base supporting production outside China. | Proximity to southern China, an established electronics workforce and a growing supplier network. | Smaller ecosystem than China and continued dependence on inputs and logistics linked to southern China. |
Public sources do not provide a complete, directly comparable current output table for all three countries. It is therefore not possible to state a verified country-by-country production percentage or to claim that India or Vietnam has replaced China.
Why China remains central to Apple’s supply chain
Scale and supplier density
China’s advantage is not just low-cost assembly. Decades of electronics manufacturing have created clusters of component makers, precision-machining firms, packaging providers, logistics companies, equipment technicians and experienced production managers. Suppliers can be located close enough to exchange parts and engineering support quickly, which helps Apple launch complex products at very high volumes.
Apple’s long-standing outsourcing relationships also reduce the time needed to qualify factories and processes. A production line can draw on an existing pool of trained labor and established quality systems instead of starting from zero in a new country.

The concentration risk
The same concentration that creates efficiency creates exposure. Apple’s filing identifies risks from trade restrictions, political developments, public-health measures and failures at a single supplier or location. A disruption at one highly specialized plant can affect a product even when final assembly is available elsewhere, because critical parts may still come from one region or one partner.
China’s role should therefore be understood as both an asset and a vulnerability: it offers unmatched ecosystem depth, while its weight in the network means a China-specific disruption can have an outsized effect.
What India makes for Apple
India’s clearest role is iPhone assembly
India has become Apple’s most prominent alternative location for assembling iPhones. Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry said in a 2024 speech that Apple was producing the iPhone 16 series in India. The ministry also cited an analyst projection that India would represent 23% of Apple’s total production volume by the end of 2025.

Why India is attractive
- Geographic diversification: Production in India reduces reliance on factories located entirely in China.
- Domestic demand: India is a large consumer market, giving Apple a reason to develop local operations beyond export assembly.
- Policy support: Government incentives and efforts to attract electronics manufacturing can help offset the cost of building new capacity.
- Labor and engineering growth: A growing electronics workforce can support additional assembly lines and supplier activity.
What India still has to build
Final assembly is only one layer of an iPhone. India must continue developing a deeper local component base, supplier qualification capacity, precision processes, testing operations and logistics links. Apple also has to maintain consistent yields while production scales. The available public sources identify these as execution challenges but do not quantify a complete Indian supplier count or a countrywide component share.
India can therefore become a major assembly center without immediately replacing China as the source of the broadest range of parts, tooling and manufacturing services. The practical question is not whether India can assemble iPhones; it is how quickly more of the surrounding ecosystem can be localized.
What Vietnam makes for Apple
A broad supplier and assembly base
Vietnam’s role is broader than a single iPhone-assembly program. The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Apple’s 2022 supplier list included 26 suppliers and 28 factories in Vietnam. Most were in northern provinces connected to supply chains in southern China.
That geography helps explain Vietnam’s appeal. Companies can add Vietnamese capacity while remaining close to established Chinese suppliers, ports, engineering resources and cross-border logistics. Vietnam offers a way to distribute production geographically without severing the industrial links that make the wider network work.

How Vietnam differs from India
India’s most clearly documented expansion is iPhone assembly. Vietnam is described in the available evidence as a supplier and assembly base serving a wider set of Apple production needs. The public sources reviewed do not provide a complete product-by-product list for Vietnamese factories, so it would be misleading to assign specific Apple devices or components without documentation.
Apple said its annual spending in Vietnam had doubled since 2019, a sign of expanding engagement rather than a one-time factory move. Chief executive Tim Cook, quoted by the Associated Press in 2024, said: “There is no place like Vietnam, a vibrant and beautiful country.”
Vietnam’s limits
Vietnam’s supplier network is growing, but it is smaller than China’s and remains connected to southern China for parts, materials and logistics. That means Vietnamese capacity can reduce the effect of a disruption confined to China, yet it may not fully protect Apple from a regional shock affecting cross-border suppliers or transport routes.
How the three-country strategy improves resilience
Separating assembly from components
Apple can place final assembly in more than one country while continuing to source specialized components from established suppliers. This creates partial redundancy: a disruption at one assembly location may be mitigated by another, even if the component network remains concentrated.

Adding capacity in stages
Diversification usually begins with selected models, production phases or supplier lines. Once workers, equipment and quality systems are proven, Apple and its partners can increase volumes or add products. A staged approach limits the risk of moving an entire product family before the new site is ready.
Maintaining qualified alternatives
Apple’s filing makes clear that changing suppliers is slow and resource-intensive. Qualification involves engineering validation, reliability testing, process audits and sustained performance at volume. A second location is valuable only when it can meet Apple’s standards consistently, not merely when it has nominal capacity.
China vs. India vs. Vietnam: the strategic trade-off
| Question | China | India | Vietnam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where is the strongest ecosystem today? | China, because of scale, supplier density and mature infrastructure. | Still developing beyond assembly. | Growing, but smaller and linked to southern China. |
| Which country is most associated with iPhone assembly growth? | China remains the established base. | India, including cited iPhone 16 production. | Expanding assembly activity, but public sources do not establish a comparable iPhone output share. |
| What problem does expansion address? | Efficiency and volume, while creating concentration exposure. | Geographic and geopolitical concentration in iPhone production. | Regional diversification and broader supplier resilience. |
| What is hardest to reproduce? | Not applicable; China already has the deepest network. | Complete component and logistics ecosystem at China’s scale. | Broader supplier depth and independence from cross-border inputs. |
Apple’s supplier oversight and investment
Apple says it screens suppliers for human-rights, environmental and other risks before production begins. Screening is part of managing a distributed network: adding countries does not remove the need to audit factories, enforce standards and monitor working conditions across partners.

Apple’s current supply-chain information also describes a $600 billion commitment announced in 2025 to incentivize more critical-component manufacturing in the United States. The same page identifies a $50 million Apple Supplier Employee Development Fund and education hubs in China, India, Vietnam and the United States. These programs do not turn any one country into a self-sufficient Apple base, but they show that workforce development and supplier capability are treated as long-term infrastructure.
How diversified is Apple’s supply chain?
It is geographically diversified, but not evenly or completely diversified. Apple has manufacturing and supplier activity across several countries, reducing dependence on a single national location for every stage. However, the company still acknowledges concentration among a small number of partners and, in some cases, single locations. India and Vietnam add alternatives; they do not yet provide a public basis for saying that China’s role has been replaced.
The best measure of diversification is therefore not the number of countries on a map. It is whether Apple has qualified, high-volume alternatives for each critical component and production step. On that standard, Apple has made meaningful progress in India and Vietnam while continuing to rely heavily on China’s ecosystem.
Quick Recap
What to watch next
- India’s production mix: Whether growth extends from final assembly into more locally supplied components.
- Vietnamese supplier depth: Whether the network expands beyond assembly and China-linked inputs.
- Location redundancy: Whether Apple can source the same critical part from multiple countries or partners.
- Execution quality: Whether new sites sustain Apple’s required yields, reliability and delivery performance at scale.
- Disclosure quality: Whether Apple publishes enough country-level data to compare output directly instead of relying on projections or dated supplier lists.
