Apple is reportedly preparing to activate Apple Intelligence in mainland China through iOS 27.3 in December 2026. The date comes from Bloomberg-based reporting published October 14, 2026, not from an Apple consumer-launch announcement. The initial release is expected to bring an older group of features—Genmoji, notification summaries, Writing Tools and Photos Clean Up—while the rebuilt Siri and several newer image tools remain unavailable.
When is Apple Intelligence coming to China?
The reported target is December 2026, delivered through iOS 27.3 for users in mainland China. Apple has not publicly announced that date as a final consumer launch, so the schedule can still change while regulatory approvals and software preparations continue.

This would arrive roughly two years after Apple Intelligence first began rolling out elsewhere. China’s release is expected to start with the earlier Apple Intelligence feature set rather than every capability available in other markets.
What the first China release is expected to include
| Feature | Expected status in the first mainland-China release | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Genmoji | Expected to be included | Users should be able to create custom emoji-style images from descriptions. |
| Notification summaries | Expected to be included | Supported notifications can be condensed into short summaries. |
| Writing Tools | Expected to be included, with limits | Apple’s writing assistance is expected to work in supported applications; some text-generation functions may be restricted by app or feature. |
| Photos Clean Up | Expected to be included | The tool can remove unwanted objects from compatible photos. |
| Rebuilt Siri AI | Not expected initially | The more capable, context-aware Siri experience is expected to remain excluded from the December release. |
| Apple’s in-house image-generation tools | Not expected initially | The China launch is not expected to include Apple’s newer image-creation features. |
| Newer image expansion | Not expected initially | The expanded-image capability is expected to be held back at launch. |
| Camera-based visual intelligence | Not expected initially | Features that analyze a scene through the camera are expected to be unavailable at first. |
The exclusions are significant: a December activation would be a partial Apple Intelligence launch, not feature parity with Apple’s latest international offering.

Why Apple Intelligence has been delayed in China
Generative-AI services in China must meet requirements covering content controls, security assessments and algorithm registration. Reporting says Apple received preliminary approval in July 2026 and obtained later permits for recent iPhones on September 29, while discussions continued with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Apple acknowledged the regulatory issue in its June 8, 2026 newsroom release: “Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.” That statement confirms the restriction but does not provide a public launch date.

How the China-specific implementation is expected to work
Reports identify Alibaba’s Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models as part of Apple’s China implementation. The arrangement is expected to include guardrails that allow government approval of model updates, an additional control layer compared with Apple’s normal software-release process.

Baidu is reported to support search and some Siri-related functions. These partnerships help Apple provide services that comply with local requirements, but they also mean the China version may behave differently from Apple Intelligence in other regions. The exact division of tasks between Apple’s on-device models, Alibaba’s systems and Baidu services has not been publicly detailed.

Will Apple Intelligence work on Chinese iPhones?
Possibly, but owning a compatible model is only one requirement. Availability will depend on all of the following:
- Supported hardware: Apple’s June 2026 release lists iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max among devices supporting its latest on-device Apple Intelligence model.
- Mainland-China software eligibility: The iPhone must receive the regional Apple software build that enables the approved features.
- Regulatory authorization: Apple must have the necessary permissions for the model and services used by that build.
- Staged rollout: Apple may enable features gradually by device, account, carrier or software version as approvals are finalized.
Therefore, an imported iPhone or a China-sold iPhone with the right processor should not be assumed to gain Apple Intelligence immediately. Hardware compatibility does not override regional software restrictions or the regulatory rollout.

What Chinese users should check before updating
- Confirm that the phone appears on Apple’s supported-device list for the relevant Apple Intelligence model.
- Install the iOS version that Apple designates for mainland China; the reported target is iOS 27.3.
- Check the feature descriptions after updating rather than assuming every international Apple Intelligence function is present.
- Expect some writing and text-generation actions to vary by application.
- Do not treat a beta, leaked build or imported regional device as proof that the public China rollout has begun.
Timeline and certainty

|---|---|---|
| June 8, 2026 | Apple said Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features would not be available in China while it addressed regulatory requirements. | Official Apple statement; no consumer launch date given. |
| July 2026 | Apple reportedly received preliminary approval for its China implementation. | Reported regulatory milestone. |
| September 29, 2026 | Reporting said Apple obtained later permits covering recent iPhones. | Reported milestone; continuing discussions were also noted. |

What this means for buyers and current owners
People choosing an iPhone for Apple Intelligence should distinguish between a device’s processor capability and the services Apple can legally activate in a particular market. A supported iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max may be technically ready, yet still lack features until the mainland-China software build and approvals are in place.

Until Apple publishes final release notes and availability details, December 2026 should be treated as a reported plan rather than a guaranteed date.
