Apple Reference Image can help you see whether an eligible iPhone photo’s pixels changed after capture. Turn on the opt-in mode, take a photo with the Main camera on an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, then develop its signed capture data in Photos and compare the result with the ordinary image. It is a provenance tool—not a universal AI-image detector or proof that the photographed scene was genuine.
What Apple Reference Image shows
Reference Image is an optional camera mode that creates a signed record of sensor-captured image data. After development, that record becomes a minimally processed reference image that you can compare with the regular photo. Differences may reveal a crop, color adjustment, or generative-AI change made to the ordinary image.

The reference image is less contrasty and less saturated than the regular photo because it receives minimal processing. That difference is expected; it is not, by itself, evidence that the regular photo was tampered with. Apple describes the feature as a way to authenticate that image data came from a supported iPhone camera sensor at a bounded time. It does not establish that the scene was unstaged, accurately represented, or truthful.
How capture and authentication work
When Reference mode is selected, the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max Main camera sensor signs captured pixel data and sensor-produced metadata. Apple says other relevant values produced outside the sensor are signed with the Secure Enclave Processor. The system uses a secure digital negative with lower and upper cryptographic timestamp bounds; Private Cloud Compute (PCC) then develops it into a viewable reference image.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple Security Research describes its guarantee this way: “Apple Reference Image offers a trustworthy, scalable guarantee that a reference image is what it claims to be: a real photograph, captured by a real sensor in an iPhone camera, at a specific time.” This is Apple’s description of its system, not an independently established guarantee about every aspect of an image or scene.
Apple identifies semantic authenticity, resilience to compromise, and privacy preservation as design goals. It says secure hardware protects capture, PCC runs inspectable processing, and images or sensors can be revoked if fraud is detected. Apple also says public viewers cannot determine whether two reference images came from the same sensor. These are Apple’s technical claims; no independent accuracy or fraud-prevention rate is published in the cited material.
Set up, capture, and compare a reference
- Enable the mode: On a supported iPhone, go to Settings > Camera > Reference Image, select Add Reference Mode, and complete setup. It is off by default.
- Capture: Open Camera, select Reference mode, and take the photo. The phone saves an ordinary photo along with signed data from the Main camera sensor.
- Develop: In Photos, open the image and tap its Reference badge. Development sends reference data and metadata to PCC for processing and authentication, so an internet connection is required.
- Compare and inspect: Switch between the developed reference image and the ordinary photo to look for visible differences. Use the Info control to inspect reference metadata.
- Choose what to share: Decide whether to include reference data for an individual share or use the persistent Share Reference Image and Transfer Reference Image controls.
Where you can capture and view images
| Task | Supported devices and software | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Capture signed reference data | iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, using the Main camera sensor | Apple says capture mode is unavailable in the EU. In mainland China, users cannot capture or develop reference images, though they can view ones shared with them. Availability also varies by country and region. |
| Develop, view, and share a reference image | iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or macOS 27 or later | Development requires an internet connection. |
Reference mode supports Live Photos, Portraits, and Photographic Styles, but some camera features—including Night Mode—are unavailable.

Storage and sharing considerations
Reference data adds storage use. Apple’s published specifications are approximate:
| Capture resolution | Undeveloped reference data | Developed reference data |
|---|---|---|
| 12 MP or 24 MP | Approximately 8–10 MB | Approximately 3 MB |
| 48 MP | Approximately 35–40 MB | Approximately 7–8 MB |
These are Apple’s specifications, not independent measurements. Be cautious when sharing a photo before it has been developed: Apple warns that the data may include sensitive device information, such as a serial number, and the full image frame even if you used zoom. Including All Photos Data can expose unique hardware identifiers and uncropped footage, so check the share options before sending.

Capture and development are separate steps: capture creates signed data on the device, while development and authentication involve network processing. Apple says raw photos and metadata may be sent to PCC for authentication. Its privacy policy also says information about the sensor—including unique hardware identifiers—and photo metadata may be sent from PCC to Apple for fraud prevention and authentication.

Apple says it cannot access the raw photo during authentication and that privacy-preserving measures prevent it from learning which authenticated photos a user views. It also notes that some business records may be retained after the feature is disabled. In practical terms, the workflow is not entirely offline, and Apple does disclose metadata and sensor-identifier flows.

Because the mode is opt-in and can consume additional storage, it makes sense to use it for images whose capture history may matter—for example, a document, a product condition record, or a newsworthy scene—rather than assume every casual photo needs it. Those are use cases for provenance, not a guarantee against staging or misleading framing. Apple’s documented behavior supports using Reference mode only when provenance is useful, or leaving it available for routine use if the added storage and sharing considerations suit your needs.
