Apple announced this on October 5, 2026, and says iPhone Duo reaches customers on October 23, 2026. Apple’s wording: “You can submit your iPhone Duo optimized apps and games in App Store Connect today.” Existing apps don’t need a redesign before launch, because Apple says all apps will run on the device. A recompile and some layout checks decide how well yours uses the folding display.
What Apple announced, and the dates that matter

The screenshot requirement and the SDK requirement are two different rules that happen to start in the same month. Meeting one does not satisfy the other.

What “Duo-ready” means: it depends on your SDK
Apple’s guidance separates “runs on iPhone Duo” from “optimized for iPhone Duo.” The SDK you build with determines the behavior:

Xcode 27.1 adds iPhone Duo support, and Apple says you can recompile existing apps with it. Before shipping a 27.1 build, check your content against the vertical toolbar and tab bar layout. That change is the one most likely to surprise you.

What to audit in your code
Apple names several patterns that can produce stretched, clipped, or misplaced content on the new display:
- Hardcoded screen dimensions. Base layout on the current size of the view or window instead.
- Fixed orientation assumptions. Respond when the available space changes, not only at launch.
- Device-idiom checks. Use size classes or available space. A regular width doesn’t mean the device is an iPad.
- Full-bleed images and video. On wider displays these may crop important content.
How to test
Apple lists three options:
- Resizable iOS simulator in Device Hub. Use it to see behavior across poses and orientations.
- iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27. Try extreme window sizes.
- iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1. Apple calls this the best way to test the full native experience.
These are Apple’s recommendations. I haven’t run them independently.

Preparing your App Store page
Apple recommends showing Duo support in your screenshots and previews across orientations. You can preview the assets in App Store Connect. You can also submit a featuring nomination and state that the app is optimized for Duo, including support for all device poses. Apple’s general submission guidance also lists the usual items to prepare: app name, icon, description, screenshots, previews, keywords, privacy details, the age-rating questionnaire, and accessibility information.

- Recompile with Xcode 27.1 and run the app in the Duo simulator, open and closed.
- Fix hardcoded sizes, orientation logic, and idiom checks that break the layout.
- Check how toolbars, tab bars, and edge-to-edge media look under the 27.1 layout.
- Capture screenshots and previews across orientations, then check them in App Store Connect.
- Submit now if you want Duo support at launch, or plan the work before April 2027.
About the device
Apple’s September 9, 2026 newsroom release calls iPhone Duo its first foldable iPhone. It lists a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple’s footnote gives diagonal measurements of 7.58 and 5.36 inches as standard rectangles and says the actual viewable area is smaller. Apple also says Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are already taking advantage of the folding design. That is Apple’s claim, not an independent evaluation. No independent adoption or sales data for the device was available at the time of writing.
