What the free Fire TV update changes
Amazon says the redesigned interface began rolling out in February 2026 and is now available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Stick devices and Amazon Ember smart TVs. Current-generation Fire TV Cube devices purchased globally also ship with the redesigned interface, according to Amazon’s June 22, 2026 update.

The update reorganizes the home screen with refreshed typography and colors, and lets viewers rearrange apps. Long-pressing the Home button opens a shortcut panel. Amazon also says it has made Games, Art & Photos, and Ambient Experience easier to reach. The company describes the interface changes as a free software update.
Amazon reports speed gains of up to 20–30% in some cases on devices people already own after it rebuilt underlying code for the interface. This is Amazon’s claim; its announcement does not provide a testing protocol or independent benchmark. It also says viewers now find something to watch tens of millions more times per month, without publishing methodology for that figure.

What “smarter” means in the upcoming Alexa+ update
Amazon’s September 30, 2026 announcement describes a more conversational way to search for entertainment with Alexa+. The assistant is intended to combine information such as awards, events, and cultural references with a customer’s subscriptions and watch history, then handle follow-up questions in a threaded conversation. Amazon author Isaac Schultz described the change as drawing on real-world context “to answer more complex questions and deliver smarter, more personal responses.” These are product descriptions from Amazon, not independent tests of recommendation accuracy.
Examples Amazon gives include asking for Marvel movies in timeline order, finding award-nominated shows that were overlooked, or looking for highly rated book-to-screen adaptations. A viewer could refine a recommendation by asking for something newer or with a female lead. Whether a particular title appears can depend on the services and subscriptions available to that viewer.

A hub to resume conversations
A dedicated Alexa+ hub on Fire TV is planned to show personalized prompt suggestions and recent conversations. Amazon says viewers will be able to resume a conversation that started on an Echo device or in the Alexa app.
Discovery and live content
Amazon says live content from more than 40 apps is integrated into the Fire TV experience, naming DirecTV, Peacock, Sling, Tubi, and YouTube TV as examples. Its Games hub is intended to bring Xbox, Luna, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Weekend into one experience. The announcement does not guarantee that every service, game, or title is available in every country or subscription tier.

Amazon also says a redesigned Amazon Music app for Fire TV is planned for later in fall 2026. The proposed app would combine music, music videos, video podcasts, live concerts, artist performances, festival livestreams, and original content. This is a planned release, not a feature the announcement establishes as already available.
When the Alexa+ features arrive—and on which devices
Amazon’s new Fire TV Alexa+ features are not part of the already-available interface update. The company says their U.S. rollout begins in November 2026 on the following devices:

Amazon says the features will expand to the new Fire TV Stick 4K and more countries early next year. That is a future rollout plan, not a guarantee of current availability. The announcement does not give a model-by-model list for partner TVs.

Amazon says the Fire TV mobile app will gain text and voice search, recommendations, and watchlist tools. It also describes three discovery features:

The app update is scheduled to begin rolling out in the U.S. sometime in 2026, with more countries to follow early next year. Amazon has not announced an exact date.
Does Alexa+ cost extra?
In an August 2026 announcement, Amazon said Alexa+ was rolling out at no additional cost to eligible U.S. customers with compatible Fire TV devices, whether or not they have Prime. Amazon said no action, app download, or subscription activation was required for that access. Its listed compatible categories included current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember TVs, and certain partner TVs. Availability is limited by eligibility, location, and device compatibility.
That does not mean every Alexa+ capability is included. Amazon said some additional features—including Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and advanced Home Modes—require Prime membership or an Alexa+ Standard Plan. The company also reported that Alexa’s top movie recommendation was selected over 40% more frequently for search queries than with original Alexa, but the announcement does not provide the measurement methodology.

What Amazon’s figures do—and do not—show
Amazon cites Gracenote research saying people in the U.S. spend an average of 12 minutes searching for something to watch, up from 10.5 minutes in 2023. That is Gracenote research as reported by Amazon in 2026; Amazon’s announcement does not include the underlying report. The figure provides context for the company’s focus on discovery, but does not independently demonstrate that the new interface or Alexa+ reduces search time.
Similarly, Amazon’s speed, recommendation, and engagement numbers are company-reported figures without a testing or measurement method in the cited announcements.
