Yes—both Apple Maps and Google Maps can guide you in CarPlay after you download the relevant map area before leaving coverage. Apple Maps is the more tightly integrated iPhone-and-CarPlay option: on supported iOS versions and in eligible regions it supplies offline driving directions, place information and estimated arrival times, with automatic updates enabled by default and an Only Use Offline Maps control. Google Maps also supports downloaded offline areas and CarPlay, but Google says real-time traffic and other online features are unavailable offline, and downloaded maps expire one year after download unless updated.

What works when CarPlay has no internet connection?

CarPlay does not create map data by itself. The iPhone running the navigation app must already have the map information stored locally, or the app must be able to obtain it over a connection. If you lose mobile data after starting a route, the result therefore depends on whether the destination and roads are inside a previously downloaded area and whether your app supports offline routing for your device, region and vehicle implementation.

Apple documents offline Maps in iOS 17 and later as usable for information and navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Its offline package can include turn-by-turn driving directions, place details and an estimated arrival time. You download and manage that package on the iPhone, then use Maps through the normal CarPlay navigation interface.

Google documents offline maps for supported car implementations and separately supports Google Maps in Apple CarPlay. A downloaded Google map can provide navigation without an internet connection, but Google explicitly warns that real-time traffic is unavailable when the car is offline. The documentation for Google’s offline car behavior does not necessarily describe every phone-based CarPlay setup one-for-one, so confirm that your particular iPhone, vehicle and app combination exposes the expected offline behavior before a remote trip.

Apple Maps and Google Maps at a glance

Question Apple Maps Google Maps
Can it navigate offline? Yes, on supported iOS versions and in supported regions after an area is downloaded. Yes, for supported car implementations after an area is downloaded; phone-based CarPlay behavior should be verified for your setup.
Driving directions without data Apple documents offline turn-by-turn driving directions. Downloaded offline maps can provide navigation, subject to the supported implementation and downloaded coverage.
Place information Apple documents place information in offline Maps. Online-dependent information may not be available offline.
Estimated arrival time Apple documents an ETA for offline navigation. An ETA may be calculated from the downloaded map, but live conditions cannot be incorporated while offline.
Live traffic Not established as available offline in the cited Apple documentation. Unavailable offline, according to Google.
Download management Maps app on iPhone; automatic updates are on by default, with an Only Use Offline Maps option. Google Maps on iPhone; you select an area manually and should update it periodically.
Expiration No expiration period is stated in the cited Apple material. Google says offline maps expire one year after download unless updated.
CarPlay support Native Apple Maps workflow. Google Maps is supported as a CarPlay navigation app; Google documents searching and adding stops along a CarPlay route.

This is not a universal ranking of map accuracy, route quality, privacy or battery use. The available documentation does not establish a winner on those points. The practical choice is mainly about offline controls, ecosystem preference and whether your vehicle and region support the features you need.

How to use Apple Maps offline in CarPlay

1. Open the offline-map controls on your iPhone

  1. Open the Maps app on the iPhone that you will connect to CarPlay.
  2. Open the profile or initials menu and choose Offline Maps. Apple also allows you to select an area directly on the map.

2. Select the road area you will need

  1. Enter a destination, or choose Current Location to begin from where you are.
  2. Resize the selection so it covers the complete route, not only the destination city. Include likely detours, fuel or rest stops and the return route if you may travel back through the same offline region.
  3. Tap Download and wait for the download to finish while the iPhone has a reliable connection.

The downloaded region must cover the roads you expect to use. Downloading a city-sized area is not enough if the route crosses a large rural stretch outside that boundary. Map coverage, storage and regional eligibility can affect what you can select and how large an area can be saved.

3. Check update and offline settings

Apple says Automatic Updates is turned on by default. Leave it enabled when you want Apple to refresh saved map data while a connection is available. If you deliberately want Maps to rely on stored data even when a connection exists, use the Only Use Offline Maps setting. That setting is useful for testing your preparation or for avoiding online requests, but it also prevents Maps from using newer online information.

4. Verify the package before departure

  • Open the saved map area and make sure your starting point, destination and the roads between them appear inside the boundary.
  • Confirm that the download is complete rather than still pending.
  • Check that the iPhone has enough available storage for the selected area.
  • Connect the iPhone to CarPlay and select Maps.
  • Enter the destination and confirm that driving directions and an ETA are shown before you enter a no-service area.

Apple documents driving directions through CarPlay. The phone remains the device managing the downloaded map; CarPlay supplies the in-car display and controls.

How to use Google Maps offline in CarPlay

1. Download a custom area in Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps on the iPhone.
  2. Open Settings > Offline maps > Select your own map.
  3. Move and resize the map so it includes the entire planned route and any reasonable alternate area.
  4. Tap Download and wait for completion before leaving connectivity.

Google’s selection tool lets you choose the area manually. A narrow selection can fail when a route or stop falls outside its edges, so include a margin around the roads you intend to use.

2. Keep the download current

Google says offline maps expire one year after download and must be updated periodically. Update the saved area before a long trip, especially if it has been stored for many months. Google also documents optional automatic downloads in supported car implementations; the availability of that behavior can differ from a phone-based Apple CarPlay setup, so do not assume it is enabled on your vehicle.

3. Start Google Maps in CarPlay

  1. Connect the iPhone to CarPlay.
  2. Open Google Maps from the CarPlay app launcher.
  3. Choose the destination and start the route while you still have a connection, if possible.
  4. Use Google’s CarPlay controls to search and add stops along the route when those functions are available in your implementation.

Google supports Maps as a CarPlay navigation app. However, Google’s offline-car documentation refers to supported car implementations, while CarPlay runs the app from your iPhone. Treat a successful pre-trip test as the confirmation for your specific vehicle, iOS version and Google Maps release.

4. Set expectations for offline mode

When the car is offline, Google says real-time traffic is unavailable. Other features that require a network connection can also be unavailable, such as current incident information or data that has not been included in the downloaded area. The saved map can still support navigation within its coverage, but it cannot react to live traffic conditions.

Which app is better for offline CarPlay navigation?

Choose Apple Maps when integration and automatic maintenance matter most

  • You use an iPhone and want the native Apple Maps workflow in CarPlay.
  • You want Apple’s documented offline driving directions, place information and ETA on supported iOS versions and in eligible regions.
  • You prefer downloads managed from one iPhone menu, with Automatic Updates enabled by default.
  • You want an explicit Only Use Offline Maps control for a trip where you intend to rely on stored data.

Apple Maps is the straightforward choice when the trip is planned around an iPhone and the priority is a first-party CarPlay experience. Its offline availability still depends on iOS version, country or region and map coverage.

Choose Google Maps when its search ecosystem and manual areas fit your trip

  • You already organize destinations and saved places in Google Maps.
  • You prefer selecting and managing a custom downloadable rectangle yourself.
  • You want Google Maps available as the CarPlay navigation app and are comfortable checking your vehicle’s support for offline behavior.
  • You can update the download before its one-year expiration and accept that live traffic will not work offline.

Google Maps can be the better fit for travelers who already keep their locations there, but its offline limits are more explicit: traffic is unavailable and the download is not permanent.

Use both when the trip justifies redundancy

There is no rule that prevents downloading the same corridor in both apps. A second prepared app can be useful if one app lacks a place detail, if your preferred search does not find a destination offline, or if you want a backup route. Test both on the connected iPhone and avoid assuming that an area saved in one app is available in the other; each application manages its own downloads.

What happens when the signal disappears mid-route?

Apple Maps

If the route and destination are inside a supported downloaded area, Apple’s offline Maps feature is designed to continue providing driving navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data. The stored data supplies the road and place information; it does not require CarPlay to download the map again. A destination outside the saved area, an unsupported region or an iOS version without the feature can prevent the expected offline result.

Google Maps

If the route is inside a current downloaded area and your car implementation supports the documented offline behavior, Google Maps can continue navigation without an internet connection. Google’s warning about live traffic still applies: losing connectivity removes real-time traffic and other network-dependent services even if turn-by-turn guidance continues.

What neither app can promise

  • Coverage for roads outside the downloaded boundary.
  • Current traffic conditions while offline.
  • Identical feature availability in every country, language, vehicle or software version.
  • Access to online place information that was not stored in the offline package.

Pre-trip checklist for a no-service drive

  1. Confirm eligibility: check your iOS version, country or region, language and vehicle implementation against the app’s supported features.
  2. Download the complete corridor: include the departure area, destination, route, likely detours and planned stops.
  3. Check storage: remove an unnecessary saved area or free iPhone space if the download cannot complete.
  4. Update before departure: let Apple’s Automatic Updates run, or manually update Google’s area; remember Google’s one-year expiration.
  5. Test on the iPhone: open the saved map area and confirm the destination is inside it.
  6. Test in CarPlay: connect the iPhone, open the chosen navigation app and start a route while online.
  7. Test the offline assumption: use Apple’s Only Use Offline Maps setting when appropriate, or otherwise verify that the downloaded Google area is selected and current. Restore your normal settings after testing.
  8. Plan for traffic blindness: leave with extra time because offline navigation cannot provide live traffic updates.

Troubleshooting common failures

The download button is missing or the feature is unavailable

Check the iOS version, country or region and language requirements. Apple’s offline Maps feature is documented for iOS 17 and later, but availability can still vary by region. Google’s offline behavior likewise depends on supported implementations. If the option remains unavailable, your account, software, vehicle or location may not be eligible.

The route leaves the saved area

Return to the app’s offline-map manager and enlarge the selection to cover the whole journey. Include the roads between the map boundary and the destination, not just a pin at the endpoint. Download again while connected, then repeat the CarPlay test.

Google Maps shows no traffic

This is expected when the car is offline. Google explicitly states that real-time traffic is unavailable without an internet connection. Reconnecting may restore online services, but the offline map itself cannot supply current traffic conditions.

A Google map is no longer usable

Check its age. Google says offline maps expire one year after download. Connect to the internet, open Settings > Offline maps, select the area and update it. Do this before the journey rather than relying on an expired package at the roadside.

CarPlay opens, but the app cannot find the destination

Search for the destination on the iPhone while connected, verify that it lies inside the downloaded area and then reopen the app in CarPlay. Place details and search results can depend on online data, so save or confirm the exact destination before entering a coverage gap.

Navigation works on the phone but not on the dashboard

Confirm that the iPhone is the device connected to CarPlay and that the navigation app is installed and permitted in the CarPlay app list. Apple Maps is the native workflow; Google Maps must be available as a supported CarPlay navigation app. Vehicle software and manufacturer implementation can change the available controls.

Privacy, accounts and ecosystem considerations

The cited documentation does not establish a universal privacy winner or quantify battery use. Treat those as personal decision factors rather than proven differences. Apple Maps is managed through the Apple Maps and iPhone workflow; Google Maps is managed through Google Maps and its account ecosystem. Choose the app that already contains your saved places and search history if minimizing setup matters, but still download and verify the route locally before departure.

Data-plan concerns are also practical rather than a reason to assume one app is always superior. Downloading over Wi-Fi can reduce mobile-data use, while Apple’s Only Use Offline Maps setting can help ensure that Maps relies on stored data. Google’s offline mode avoids live traffic requests, but that also removes the information needed to reflect current congestion.

Bottom line for a CarPlay road trip

For most iPhone drivers who want the least complicated offline preparation, Apple Maps is the more integrated choice: download the area on the iPhone, confirm coverage, rely on its documented offline directions and use Automatic Updates or Only Use Offline Maps as needed. Google Maps is a sound alternative when its search ecosystem is your preference and your vehicle supports the relevant offline behavior; download a generous area, keep it updated and remember that offline maps expire after one year. Whichever app you choose, prepare before leaving service and do not plan on live traffic once the connection is gone.
