Choose Logitech Combo Touch if you want to spend less, remove the keyboard for drawing or reading, and keep a protective shell with a flexible kickstand and Pencil storage.
Compatibility comes first. Apple and Logitech sell model-specific cases, so an iPad’s generation and screen size determine whether either keyboard will fit. Confirm those details before comparing features or prices.

Apple Magic Keyboard vs. Logitech Combo Touch at a glance
These cases solve different problems. Magic Keyboard turns a compatible iPad into a compact clamshell-like workstation, while Combo Touch treats the iPad as a tablet first and a laptop substitute second.
| Consideration | Apple Magic Keyboard | Logitech Combo Touch |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Compact desk and travel setups, premium typing and trackpad feel | Detachable keyboard use, flexible viewing and lower entry price |
| Keyboard design | Connected floating cantilever | Detachable backlit keyboard |
| Trackpad | Large glass trackpad; current iPad Pro listings specify haptic feedback | Multi-touch and precision trackpad |
| Protection | Front and back protection in the cited current models | Protective shell remains on the iPad when the keyboard is removed |
| Tablet-only use | Requires removing the connected case to use the iPad independently | Remove the keyboard while keeping the shell and kickstand attached |
| Charging and connection | USB-C pass-through charging; no separate pairing step described for the case | Uses the iPad’s accessory interface and is marketed without a separate keyboard battery or Bluetooth-pairing step |
| Notable extras | 14-key function row, backlit keys | Kickstand flexibility and Pencil storage |
The practical choice is therefore straightforward: Magic Keyboard prioritizes a clean, compact workstation; Combo Touch prioritizes versatility away from the keyboard.

Check compatibility before buying
A case that does not match the exact iPad model is unusable, regardless of its typing feel or price. Read the model name and screen size in your iPad’s Settings app, then match that information to the manufacturer’s selector rather than relying on an online listing title alone.
Apple Magic Keyboard compatibility
Apple’s current selector lists Magic Keyboard models for:
- iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch models with M2, M3 or M4 chips.
- iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch models with M4 or M5 chips.
Older iPad Pro and iPad Air generations have their own compatibility differences. A case for one generation is not automatically correct for another just because the screen diagonal is the same.
Logitech Combo Touch compatibility
The Combo Touch listing covered here is for iPad (10th generation and A16). Other Combo Touch products are separate, model-specific listings. Do not assume that a Combo Touch for the 10th-generation iPad fits an iPad Air or an older iPad model.
A quick identification checklist
- Open Settings and go to General > About.
- Record the exact model name, generation or chip designation, and screen size.
- Check whether the case listing names that model explicitly.
- Verify the camera cutout, port position and connector location in the product photos before ordering.
If the listing uses vague language such as “11-inch iPad,” treat that as insufficient information. Several iPad families share an 11-inch diagonal while using different bodies and connector layouts.
How the two case designs differ
Magic Keyboard: a connected floating workstation
Magic Keyboard uses a cantilever hinge that holds the iPad above the keyboard. The screen appears to float, and the keyboard section stays compact instead of extending into a separate kickstand. That arrangement suits a desk, airplane tray or small lap surface where extra depth is inconvenient.
The keyboard remains attached whenever the case is installed. You can fold the iPad into a viewing position, but the case does not turn into a bare tablet shell by detaching only the keys. If you regularly switch between typing and handheld use, you should plan on removing the entire case or accepting its added weight and bulk.

Combo Touch: a protective shell with a removable keyboard
Combo Touch separates the keyboard from the iPad’s protective shell. The shell can stay on while you sketch with Apple Pencil, read, watch video or carry the tablet around. Its rear kickstand supports multiple viewing angles, so the iPad can stand independently of the keyboard.

The detachable design is the main reason to choose Combo Touch. It also creates a trade-off: the kickstand needs more surface depth behind the iPad than a cantilever case. That is a practical consequence of the hinge-and-stand construction, not a published measurement, so consider your desk, lap and travel surfaces before deciding.
Typing, trackpads and everyday control
Magic Keyboard typing experience
Apple’s keyboard uses backlit scissor keys and includes a 14-key function row. Current iPad Pro listings specify 1 mm of key travel and haptic feedback in the trackpad. The large glass trackpad is designed to provide a laptop-style pointer surface while leaving room for multi-finger gestures.
For long documents, spreadsheets and email, the fixed keyboard position and broad trackpad make Magic Keyboard feel closer to a notebook computer than to a tablet accessory. The floating hinge also lets you adjust the viewing angle without moving a separate stand.
Combo Touch typing experience
Combo Touch also provides a backlit keyboard and a multi-touch, precision trackpad. Because the keyboard detaches, you can use the trackpad and keys when needed, then remove the entire keyboard when touch, Pencil or handheld use is more comfortable.
The detachable hinge introduces an extra transition between modes. If your work alternates constantly between typing and touching the screen, that flexibility may matter more than the permanently connected feel of Magic Keyboard. If you almost always type at a desk, Apple’s integrated layout is simpler.
Which trackpad is better?
Magic Keyboard has the stronger specification on paper: a larger glass surface and, on current iPad Pro versions, haptic feedback. Combo Touch’s precision and multi-touch support covers pointer control and gestures, but its key advantage is not a premium trackpad material; it is the ability to remove the keyboard without removing protection.
Choose Apple for the most laptop-like pointer experience. Choose Logitech when trackpad quality is important but tablet-only use happens often enough to justify the detachable design.

Front and back coverage
The current models cited for both products cover the iPad’s front and back. Combo Touch’s shell is specifically designed to remain installed when the keyboard is removed, so the iPad does not become unprotected every time you switch to drawing or reading.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Magic Keyboard protects the iPad while it is mounted, but its connected construction is less convenient for situations where you want a light, case-only tablet. Decide whether “protection while typing” is enough or whether you need protection during keyboard-free use as well.
Kickstand versus cantilever
Combo Touch’s kickstand is useful for watching video, making a video call, reading recipes or drawing at a low angle. It can hold the iPad without the keyboard attached. The stand does, however, project behind the tablet and needs a stable surface.
Magic Keyboard’s cantilever hinge keeps the support integrated with the keyboard. It occupies less separate desk depth and makes angle adjustments quick, but it does not provide the same keyboard-free stand mode.
Pencil storage and handling
Combo Touch includes Pencil storage, an advantage if you carry the stylus with the iPad and do not want it loose in a bag. The cited Magic Keyboard feature set emphasizes the keyboard, trackpad and charging design rather than a dedicated Pencil holder. If stylus storage is a daily requirement, account for that difference before choosing Apple.
Charging, pairing and ports
Magic Keyboard pass-through charging
Magic Keyboard provides a USB-C port for pass-through charging. You can connect power to the case instead of routing the cable directly into the iPad’s port, which keeps the tablet’s main port available for accessories while the iPad is mounted.
The case draws its operating power through the iPad’s connection, so the setup is designed to work without a separate keyboard charging routine. The exact charging behavior still depends on the iPad model and the power adapter you use.
Combo Touch’s accessory connection
Combo Touch connects through the iPad’s accessory interface. Logitech’s cited guide markets the keyboard without a separate keyboard battery or a Bluetooth-pairing step. In practice, that means attaching the keyboard to the case and iPad connector is the central setup action rather than opening a Bluetooth menu.
Because the keyboard uses the iPad connection, keep the connector area clean and make sure the keyboard is seated fully. A partial connection can look like a software problem when it is simply a misaligned contact.

Prices and what the premium buys
US manufacturer listings provide these starting prices:
| Product listing | Manufacturer price | Price qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Logitech Combo Touch for iPad (10th generation and A16) | $159.99 | US listing; model-specific pricing |
| Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Air | From $269 | US listing; the cited 11-inch M4 version is $269 |
| Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro | From $299 | US listing; varies by size and generation |
| Apple Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad A16/10th generation | From $249 | Different Apple keyboard case, listed for those iPad models |
Prices and availability change by region, screen size and iPad generation. Recheck the exact manufacturer listing before purchase; a lower price on one model does not make it compatible with another.
What the price gap represents
Combo Touch’s lower starting price buys the features most tablet users notice first: a keyboard, trackpad, protective shell, kickstand and detachable operation. Apple’s premium pays for a more integrated enclosure, compact cantilever footprint, large glass trackpad, haptic feedback on current Pro models, function row and pass-through charging.

Do not evaluate the difference as a simple keyboard-versus-keyboard purchase. You are choosing between two operating patterns. If you need a keyboard only occasionally, paying for a permanently attached premium mechanism may deliver little benefit. If the iPad replaces a laptop for daily writing, the integrated design can justify the higher cost.
Which case fits common iPad routines?
Choose Magic Keyboard for a laptop replacement
- You type for hours at a time and want a fixed, notebook-like layout.
- Your desk or travel table is shallow and a rear kickstand would be awkward.
- You value a large glass trackpad and haptic feedback on a current iPad Pro.
- You want USB-C pass-through charging while the iPad remains mounted.
- You prefer not to detach and reattach a keyboard during normal work.
Choose Combo Touch for a tablet that sometimes types
- You draw, read or watch video without the keyboard attached.
- You want the protective shell and kickstand to stay on the iPad in tablet mode.
- You carry an Apple Pencil and want dedicated storage in the case.
- You need a lower starting price than Apple’s current Magic Keyboard listings.
- You are comfortable giving the kickstand more room on a desk or tray.
When neither is the right match
If your iPad is not one of the explicitly listed generations, stop before ordering. A different keyboard case made for that model may be safer than trying to adapt either product. Likewise, if you need a very light bare-tablet setup, both products add more structure than a simple cover; Combo Touch at least lets you remove the keyboard while retaining its shell.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide in five minutes
- Confirm the iPad. Write down the exact generation, chip designation and screen size from Settings > General > About.
- Mark your dominant mode. If typing is the default, put a check beside Magic Keyboard; if touch or Pencil use is the default, put a check beside Combo Touch.
- Measure your workspace informally. A cantilever keyboard is the more compact arrangement; a kickstand needs room behind the iPad.
- Choose the must-have feature. Select USB-C pass-through, glass trackpad and function row for Apple, or detachable use, shell protection, kickstand and Pencil storage for Logitech.
- Compare the exact listing price. Use the model-specific manufacturer page for your region, not a price remembered from another iPad size.
Setup and daily-use tips
Setting up Magic Keyboard
- Place the iPad against the case’s magnetic connector so it seats evenly.
- Open the hinge and adjust the viewing angle before connecting power.
- Connect a USB-C cable to the case’s pass-through port when you want to charge with the iPad mounted.
- Use the function row for common system controls and the trackpad for pointer and multi-touch gestures.
If the keyboard or trackpad does not respond, remove and reseat the iPad so the magnetic and connector contacts align. Check that the iPad is the model named by the case listing before troubleshooting software.
Setting up Combo Touch
- Fit the iPad fully into the protective shell, checking each corner and the camera opening.
- Attach the keyboard to the shell’s connector and confirm that the contacts are aligned.
- Open the kickstand to the angle you need, keeping the rear support on a stable surface.
- Detach the keyboard when drawing, reading or viewing, and leave the shell installed for continued protection.
If keys or the trackpad stop working after detachment, reconnect the keyboard firmly and inspect the accessory interface for dust or debris. Because the cited setup does not rely on a separate Bluetooth-pairing step, pairing menus are not the first place to look.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Ordering by screen size alone
Several iPad families share an 11-inch or 13-inch diagonal. Generation, chip designation, camera placement and connector position can still differ. Fix this by matching the complete model name, not just the diagonal measurement.

Expecting Combo Touch to behave like a permanent laptop case
The removable keyboard is its defining feature. If you want the keyboard always connected and the smallest possible footprint, Magic Keyboard’s cantilever arrangement is the better fit.
Expecting Magic Keyboard to become a light tablet cover
Magic Keyboard is a connected workstation case. If you routinely hand the iPad to someone for reading or use it with Pencil on a sofa, the removal of the entire case may become irritating. Combo Touch avoids that step by leaving its shell attached.
Ignoring workspace depth
A kickstand can be excellent on a broad desk and awkward on a narrow airplane tray. Try the actual surface where you will work; the design difference is more important than a small specification advantage.

Apple’s prices vary between Air and Pro models and between 11-inch and 13-inch versions. Logitech’s listing is also tied to particular iPad generations. Verify the exact configuration and regional listing on the day you buy.
Verdict: buy for the way you use the iPad
Magic Keyboard is the better buy for an iPad that functions as your everyday writing computer. Its floating cantilever, large glass trackpad, backlit keys, 14-key function row and pass-through charging create the more cohesive desk and travel workstation, with haptic feedback specified on current iPad Pro versions.
Combo Touch is the better buy for an iPad that changes roles throughout the day. Its detachable keyboard, protective shell, kickstand and Pencil storage let you move from typing to drawing, reading or viewing without stripping off the case. The lower starting price strengthens that value, provided the model-specific fit is correct.
There is no universal winner. Confirm your iPad generation and size first, then choose Apple for compact laptop behavior or Logitech for detachable tablet flexibility.
