The 2024 Magic Keyboard is designed specifically around the thinner M4-generation iPad Pro. It is not merely a cover with keys: the hinge, palm rest, trackpad, keyboard backlight, and charging pass-through are intended to support a pointer-driven workflow for long writing sessions, document editing, and spreadsheet work. Independent testing from RTINGS rates its build quality as outstanding and typing as good, while noting that the compact layout cannot replace every feature of a full-size desktop keyboard.

This review explains what changed, which iPad Pro models fit, how the two sizes differ, what the trackpad and function row add in practice, how much the launch pricing represented, and when a less expensive keyboard case or separate Bluetooth keyboard makes more sense.
What changed in the 2024 Magic Keyboard
Apple redesigned the accessory for the M4 iPad Pro rather than carrying forward the previous generation. The most visible change is the aluminum palm rest, which gives the base a cooler, more rigid surface than the former material. It also visually matches the iPad Pro’s professional positioning and provides a more stable platform when both hands are on the keys.

The trackpad is now larger, made from glass, and uses haptic feedback. Apple positions that combination for selecting text, editing spreadsheet cells, and using Multi-Touch gestures. MacRumors describes the larger glass surface as easier to work with, and RTINGS confirms haptic feedback and gesture support. Because the click is generated by a haptic mechanism rather than a hinged physical button, the response remains consistent across the surface instead of requiring a press in one particular area.
A 14-key function row sits above the number row. It provides direct controls for screen brightness, volume, media playback, display lock, search, Do Not Disturb, dictation, and related system functions. These controls remove several trips to Control Center or on-screen menus during a writing or editing session.
The keyboard uses backlit scissor switches with 1 mm of key travel. A machined aluminum hinge retains the floating cantilever design and includes a USB-C port for pass-through charging. The accessory also provides front and back coverage for the tablet, although its edges remain more exposed than they would be in a rugged case. Apple sells the keyboard in black and white.
Compatibility: the model number matters
Compatibility is the first purchase decision. The 11-inch and 13-inch versions are separate products, and each must match the physical size of the iPad Pro. RTINGS reports that this generation is exclusively compatible with the corresponding M4 and M5 iPad Pro models. An older Magic Keyboard does not fit an M4 iPad Pro because Apple moved the magnets, and the new keyboard does not work with other iPad models.
In practical terms, check the exact tablet generation and diagonal before ordering:
- 11-inch keyboard: for the matching 11-inch M4 or M5 iPad Pro.
- 13-inch keyboard: for the matching 13-inch M4 or M5 iPad Pro.
- Older iPad Pro keyboard: not compatible with an M4 iPad Pro.
- Other iPad models: not supported by this M4/M5-specific keyboard.
The iPad must run iPadOS 17.4 or later. If the tablet is on an earlier release, update it in Settings > General > Software Update before diagnosing a connection problem. The keyboard attaches through the Smart Connector and does not require Bluetooth pairing, which is convenient but also means it cannot be used wirelessly with another device.
How to set it up and use pass-through charging
- Confirm the size and generation. Read the iPad’s model information in Settings > General > About and make sure it is the matching 11-inch or 13-inch M4/M5 iPad Pro.
- Install iPadOS 17.4 or newer. Use Settings > General > Software Update. A current operating system is a requirement, not an optional feature update.
- Attach the iPad to the keyboard. Align the tablet with the magnetic connector and lower it into the floating hinge. The keyboard receives power through the Smart Connector, so there is no keyboard battery to charge separately.
- Set a comfortable viewing angle. Move the floating hinge until the display and trackpad are positioned for your desk, lap, or travel surface. The cantilever keeps the tablet elevated above the keyboard rather than laying it flat.
- Charge through the keyboard when needed. Plug a USB-C cable into the keyboard’s side USB-C port. Power passes through to the iPad while the iPad’s main USB-C port remains available for a drive, display, hub, audio interface, or other accessory.
The pass-through port is for charging rather than turning the keyboard into a second data hub. If you need to connect a storage device or display while charging, use the iPad’s own USB-C port and leave the keyboard port dedicated to power.

Typing experience: good for sustained work, still compact
The scissor mechanism and 1 mm travel give the keys a familiar laptop-style feel. Backlighting helps in dim rooms, and the aluminum palm rest makes the base feel firm during long sessions. RTINGS characterizes the typing quality as good and the overall build as outstanding, so this is a meaningful step up from a thin folio keyboard for people who type for hours.
The layout remains smaller than a desktop keyboard. It omits a dedicated navigation cluster and a number pad, and the keys are packed more closely than on a full-size board. Writers and general office users can adapt quickly, but anyone who relies on a numeric keypad, full-size arrow-key arrangement, or specialized navigation keys will need an external keyboard.
The function row changes the rhythm of everyday work. Brightness and volume adjustments are immediate, while media, display lock, search, Do Not Disturb, and dictation controls avoid opening an overlay. These shortcuts are especially useful when the iPad is being used as a laptop replacement rather than as a tablet held in the hand.
There is no wireless mode and no multi-device pairing. The keyboard only works while physically attached to its compatible iPad Pro. That eliminates Bluetooth setup and battery management, but it also prevents sharing the keyboard with a phone, another tablet, or a desktop computer.
Trackpad and pointer workflow
The larger glass trackpad is the most important interaction upgrade. More surface area gives the pointer room for selecting text, dragging spreadsheet fills, resizing columns, and performing gestures without repeatedly lifting your finger. Haptic feedback provides a click sensation across the pad and works with iPadOS gestures confirmed by RTINGS.
For document work, the difference is practical: selecting a sentence or placing a cursor is less cramped, and a two-finger scroll can cover more of a page before your hand reaches the edge. In spreadsheets, the extra width makes it easier to move between cells and small controls. The trackpad does not turn iPadOS into macOS, however. App support, window behavior, and pointer precision still depend on iPadOS and on how each application implements text, tables, and drag-and-drop.
Artists who primarily use Apple Pencil may gain little from the trackpad. The accessory is optimized for a seated, pointer-and-keyboard workflow, not for holding the tablet detached and drawing on its screen.

Hinge, protection, and portability
The floating cantilever hinge is retained from the previous design. It lifts the iPad above the keys and allows the display to be positioned for typing, reading, or pointing. A machined aluminum hinge contributes to the rigid feel and includes the charging port. The arrangement is more stable on a desk than a simple folding cover, but it is not a substitute for a stand designed for extreme angles or rough environments.

Front and back surfaces are covered when the iPad is closed in the keyboard. The sides and corners are not enclosed like they would be in a rugged protective shell, so users who frequently work outdoors, travel with loose equipment, or share a tablet with children should account for the exposed edges.
Apple does not publish an official accessory weight for the 13-inch version. Three 2024 reviews measured individual units at approximately 667 g, 662 g, and 658 g, while the prior 13-inch Magic Keyboard was reported at about 710 g. Those figures are review measurements rather than a guaranteed factory specification, so treat them as a range. The newer unit is lighter in those comparisons, but the complete iPad-and-keyboard combination is still a substantial load for one-handed tablet use.
11-inch versus 13-inch: which size suits your work?

The two products are not interchangeable. Choose based on the iPad you already own, then decide whether the larger screen and workspace justify the additional cost and carrying bulk. The 13-inch model is the stronger fit for spreadsheet-heavy work, but the 11-inch combination is easier to carry and less imposing in a small bag.
Price and what the package replaces
MacRumors reported launch US prices of $299 for the 11-inch keyboard and $349 for the 13-inch keyboard on May 9, 2024. Those are launch manufacturer suggested retail prices, not current street prices; availability and discounts can change, so verify the live price before purchasing.
The value is easier to understand when counted as several accessories in one: a fitted cover, a stand, a keyboard, and a trackpad. Pass-through charging also preserves the iPad’s main USB-C port for another device. Someone who would otherwise buy all four pieces may see the premium as reasonable, especially if the keyboard is used every day.
The calculation changes for occasional typing. A separate Bluetooth keyboard can serve a desk and multiple devices for less money, while a basic keyboard case can protect the tablet and handle short emails. Those options generally give up the floating hinge, aluminum palm rest, haptic glass trackpad, or tight integration of the Apple accessory.

How it compares with lower-cost options
RTINGS identifies Logitech Combo Touch as a lower-cost keyboard-case alternative. It trades some of the Magic Keyboard’s premium materials and haptic-trackpad capability for broader flexibility and a lower entry price. That design is worth considering if protection and a detachable keyboard matter more than the floating hinge.
A standalone Bluetooth keyboard from Logitech or Keychron is another path for people who work mainly at one desk. It can pair with several devices and provide a full-size layout, navigation cluster, and number pad, but it requires a separate stand or case and does not travel as a single fitted unit.

Who should buy it
Choose it for daily writing and editing
The strongest case is sustained keyboard work: reports, essays, email-heavy jobs, content editing, and any task where a physical keyboard is used for most of the session. The rigid base, backlighting, palm rest, and pointer support reduce the compromises of treating an iPad as a laptop.
Choose it for spreadsheets and pointer navigation
The larger haptic trackpad and dedicated function row are useful when selecting cells, dragging objects, scrolling long sheets, and switching system controls without reaching for the screen. The 13-inch setup gives the most workspace if the tablet normally stays on a desk.
Skip it for media-first or Pencil-first use
If the iPad is mainly a video player, reading slate, or drawing surface, the keyboard spends much of its life adding weight and cost. A lighter cover or a simple stand may better match that pattern.
Skip it if you need one keyboard for many devices
There is no wireless or multi-device mode. Users who move between an iPad, phone, and computer should consider a Bluetooth keyboard instead.

The accessory covers the front and back but leaves edges less protected than a rugged case. Choose a case designed around impact protection when the tablet will be exposed to drops, tools, or rough travel.

Common purchase and setup pitfalls
Buying the wrong size
The 11-inch and 13-inch products are separate. Confirm the diagonal and M-series generation before checkout; a keyboard that looks similar can still fail to attach because the magnets and dimensions differ.
Assuming an older keyboard will fit
The previous Magic Keyboard does not fit an M4 iPad Pro because the magnet placement changed. Reusing an older accessory is therefore not a cost-saving option for an M4 tablet.
Expecting a wireless keyboard
This is a Smart Connector accessory, not a portable Bluetooth board. It cannot be paired with a second iPad or a Mac, and it does not have a separate wireless operating mode.

The side USB-C connector is a pass-through charging port. Use the iPad’s own USB-C port for storage, displays, hubs, or other data accessories while charging through the keyboard.
Diagnosing a feature problem before updating
iPadOS 17.4 or later is required. Check the software version first, then detach and reattach the tablet through the magnetic connector if the keys, trackpad, or function row do not respond.
Final verdict
The 2024 Magic Keyboard is the most convincing way to turn an M4 iPad Pro into a laptop-style workstation. Its aluminum palm rest, reliable backlit scissor keys, 14-key function row, larger haptic glass trackpad, floating hinge, and charging pass-through address the main frustrations of using an iPad for serious typing and pointer work. The purchase makes sense when those features are used frequently enough to justify a $299 launch price for 11 inches or $349 for 13 inches, with current pricing checked separately. For occasional typing, multi-device use, Pencil-focused work, or maximum protection, a less expensive keyboard case or standalone Bluetooth keyboard is the more rational choice.
