Most iPhone users should leave Lockdown Mode off. Apple designed it for the very few people who may be personally targeted by highly sophisticated digital attacks—not as a routine upgrade for everyone who cares about privacy. If your role or circumstances give you a credible reason to expect that kind of targeting, the added restrictions may be worth the disruption.
Lockdown Mode narrows some features and connections to reduce potential attack surface. It does not replace ordinary iPhone security, guarantee protection from every attack, or come with a published measure of how much it reduces risk. The decision is whether the threat you face justifies changing how your devices work.

Who should use Lockdown Mode?
Consider it if there is a credible reason you could be singled out for a highly sophisticated cyberattack because of who you are or what you do. Apple identifies this as a narrow threat model and says most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature. That can include people whose work or public role makes them a plausible target, but the label alone is not enough: the key question is whether you face a specific, credible risk.
For most people, ordinary iPhone security is the appropriate default. Being privacy-conscious, receiving spam, or worrying about common online scams does not by itself mean Lockdown Mode is necessary. Apple’s documentation describes a protective option for targeted threats, not a measured security tier that every user should adopt.

What is the tradeoff?
Lockdown Mode limits certain features and connections to reduce potential ways an attacker could reach the device. Those limits can affect everyday communication, browsing, sharing, and accessories. In other words, the choice is not between having security and having none; it is between standard iPhone use and a more restrictive mode aimed at an unusually serious threat.

Apple does not publish a universal effectiveness figure or attack-rate comparison for the two choices. Lockdown Mode is not a complete defense against every attack, and its restrictions should not be mistaken for a guarantee.

What changes when Lockdown Mode is on?
Messages and calls
Most message attachment types are blocked, although some image, video, and audio attachments are allowed. Features such as links and link previews may be unavailable. Incoming FaceTime calls are blocked unless you have called that contact within the preceding 30 days. SharePlay and FaceTime Live Photos are unavailable, and some incoming invitations to Apple services are blocked. Game Center is disabled, and Focus behavior may change.

Web browsing and photos
Certain complex web technologies are blocked. As a result, some sites may load more slowly or fail to work correctly; web fonts may not display and images may be missing. When photos are shared, their location information is excluded. Shared Albums are removed from the Photos app, and new Shared Album invitations are blocked.
Accessories, wireless connections, and device management
An iPhone or iPad must be unlocked before connecting to an accessory or another computer. The device will not automatically join non-secure Wi-Fi networks and disconnects from one when Lockdown Mode is enabled. Support for 2G and 3G cellular networks is turned off on iPhone and iPad.

You cannot install a new configuration profile or newly enroll a device in mobile device management (MDM) or supervision while the mode is on. Existing MDM enrollment remains in place, and administrators can still manage an already-managed device. Apple says Lockdown Mode itself is not an MDM-configurable setting.
How to decide whether the restrictions are worthwhile
- Assess the threat, not just your privacy preferences. Ask whether your work, public role, or circumstances give you a credible reason to expect personally targeted, sophisticated attacks. If not, Apple’s guidance points to standard security as the sensible default.
- Check the functional cost. Consider whether blocked attachments or invitations, changes to web behavior, or the need to unlock before accessory connections would interfere with tasks you rely on.
- Plan coverage across your devices. Apple recommends updating supported devices to the latest software and enabling Lockdown Mode on each supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It is not automatically enabled across all your Apple devices when you turn it on for one iPhone.
- Keep exceptions narrow. Apple warns that excluding an app, website, or contact reduces protection and may increase security risk. Use an exception only when needed for a trusted service or person.
How to turn on Lockdown Mode on iPhone
Apple documents availability in iOS 16 or later, with additional protections from iOS 17. Requirements and behavior can change, so check Apple’s current support guidance for your device and software version.

- Update your iPhone and other supported Apple devices to the latest software available for them.
- On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode and confirm.
- Choose Turn On & Restart, then enter your device passcode.
- To extend coverage, turn on Lockdown Mode separately on each supported iPad and Mac. Turning it on for iPhone also enables it on a paired supported Apple Watch.
Exceptions and managed devices
Apple provides ways to exclude some websites and apps, and its current guidance also documents excluding contacts from messaging limits on supported software. An exclusion restores some behavior at the cost of protection; keep it limited to trusted cases and use it only when necessary. A device already enrolled in MDM stays managed while Lockdown Mode is on, but you cannot newly enroll it or install a new configuration profile until the mode is off.
Apple’s guidance and what it does not establish
Apple’s Support page, “About Lockdown Mode”, says: “Most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature.” Its Platform Security documentation describes the restrictions and their tradeoffs. These sources explain whom the feature is for and what it changes; they do not quantify an individual’s likelihood of being targeted or provide a measured figure for how much risk Lockdown Mode reduces.
