Apple iPhone Upgrade Program vs. Carrier Installment Plans: Costs, Trade-Ins, and Switching

Short answer: Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program is usually the cleaner choice if you want an annual upgrade path, AppleCare+ included in the arrangement, and the freedom to move between carriers without waiting for a device payoff. A carrier installment plan can show a lower monthly payment when trade-in credits or a qualifying service plan are applied, but those savings may depend on staying with that carrier for the full credit period. Carrier early-upgrade add-ons also work differently: one may require a separate monthly fee, while another may require that you have already paid half the phone’s retail price.

The key is to compare the total amount you will pay before your next upgrade, not just the advertised device payment. Include taxes, AppleCare+ or carrier add-ons, required service plans, trade-in credits you can realistically earn, and any balance that becomes due when you leave early.

The two Apple options are not the same product

“Apple Upgrade” can refer to two different arrangements. The traditional iPhone Upgrade Program is an installment arrangement with an upgrade threshold. Apple’s current shopping experience also presents Apple Upgrade as a lease choice alongside Apple Card Monthly Installments, one-time purchase, and carrier financing. Their payment rules, return obligations, and switching consequences differ.

Option Payment structure When an upgrade can occur Device condition or return rule Switching position
Apple iPhone Upgrade Program 24-month, 0% APR installment loan when the upgrade is exercised At least 12 equivalent installment payments; after six scheduled payments, you can accelerate payments to reach the 12-payment equivalent Continuous AppleCare+ coverage; phone must power on, hold a charge, have an intact functioning display, and have no breaks or cracks Old financed iPhone is returned when a new loan is opened
Apple Upgrade lease 12- or 24-month lease term At the end of the selected term; Apple’s example allows an early upgrade after 21 months by paying the remaining three payments plus applicable taxes Returned device is assessed; damage can result in an AppleCare service fee Apple says a leased iPhone is always unlocked, subject to carrier terms
Carrier installment plan Carrier equipment financing; term and upgrade rules vary Depends on the carrier, promotion, and any early-upgrade feature Promotions may specify a model, condition, and service-plan requirement Apple’s shopping help says financed phones through AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon remain locked until paid in full

That distinction matters when someone says, “I want to upgrade every year.” A 12-payment threshold under the iPhone Upgrade Program, a 12- or 24-month lease, and a carrier feature that permits an upgrade after one payment are three different paths with different costs.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

How the iPhone Upgrade Program works

The 12-payment threshold

Apple’s terms require that you have paid “the equivalent of at least twelve (12) installment payments” before using the standard upgrade process. You also need an account in good standing, continuous AppleCare+ coverage, and a device that meets Apple’s condition requirements.

The threshold is based on payment equivalence, not simply the number of calendar months since purchase. After six regularly scheduled payments, Apple allows you to accelerate payments so that you reach the 12-payment equivalent sooner. Accelerating does not eliminate the other requirements or the need to return the financed phone.

What happens when you upgrade

  1. Confirm that your account is in good standing and that AppleCare+ coverage has remained continuous.
  2. Check the phone: it must power on, hold a charge, have an intact functioning display, and have no breaks or cracks.
  3. Reach the equivalent of 12 installment payments. If you have made only six scheduled payments, use the allowed accelerated payment option to make up the difference.
  4. Apply for a new 24-month, 0% APR installment loan. Apple performs a new credit check for that loan.
  5. Return the financed iPhone as part of the upgrade transaction.
  6. Make the first payment on the new loan. Apple then pays the remaining balance on the old loan under the program’s terms.

If you do not complete the upgrade transaction, the old loan does not disappear merely because you have reached the threshold. You continue making its scheduled payments until it is paid off or otherwise settled.

What the program includes financially

The program’s 0% APR loan avoids interest, but it is not a free upgrade. Your cost includes the installment payments made before each upgrade and the AppleCare+ coverage required to remain eligible. Taxes are separate costs to include in your calculation. The value of the arrangement is the predictable upgrade mechanism and the ability to avoid carrying the old device balance after Apple accepts the phone and the new loan begins.

How Apple Upgrade leasing works

12- and 24-month terms

Apple’s current shopping pages describe Apple Upgrade as a lease with either a 12-month or 24-month term. A 24-month lease can be upgraded after 24 payments in Apple’s example. An early upgrade after 21 months requires payment of the remaining three lease payments plus applicable taxes.

Because a lease is not the same as paying off a purchase loan, read the end-of-term and early-upgrade language for the exact offer shown at enrollment. The monthly amount can also change after the initial term if a trade-in credit was applied when you enrolled: Apple says that credit applies only to the initial lease term, so later payments can rise.

Condition assessments and damage fees

A leased iPhone is returned for assessment. Damage does not automatically mean you lose the upgrade, but Apple says an AppleCare service fee can apply after assessment. Budget for that possibility rather than treating a damaged phone as having the same value as a device in good condition.

Carrier freedom

Apple states that a leased iPhone is always unlocked, subject to the carrier’s terms. That means the device itself is not held to one carrier’s financing lock while the lease is active. You still must satisfy the lease payments and any carrier activation or service requirements attached to your account.

How carrier installment plans differ

Advertised payments can depend on credits

Carriers often lower the visible monthly device payment with a trade-in promotion, bill credits, or a qualifying unlimited plan. Those credits are conditional. They may require a particular trade-in model, a specified condition, a particular service tier, and continued payments for the full promotional period. If you leave early, the remaining credits can stop even though the device balance remains.

For a fair comparison, write down the phone’s full financed amount, every monthly credit, the months during which credits are promised, taxes, and any upgrade-feature fee. Treat a promotional credit as a conditional discount, not as the guaranteed market value of your old phone.

AT&T installment and early-upgrade feature

AT&T documents 36 monthly installment payments for its current smartphone installment plan. Its optional early-upgrade feature can allow an upgrade after one installment payment for an additional $10 per month, subject to eligibility. The $10 charge does not reduce the device balance; it buys access to the feature. You therefore need to count it separately from the phone payments and any service-plan cost.

An “upgrade after one payment” claim is not equivalent to owning the phone after one payment. The feature normally depends on returning the device and meeting the carrier’s eligibility and condition rules. If you cancel service or fail those rules, the remaining installment balance and any lost credits can become your responsibility.

Verizon early-upgrade terms

Verizon’s cited early-upgrade terms use a different test: eligibility begins after 30 days once at least 50% of the device’s retail price has been paid, and the returned phone must be in good working condition. If those conditions are not met, the remaining balance under the original agreement remains your responsibility.

That 50% figure is a payoff threshold, not a promise that every customer can upgrade after a fixed number of months. The timing depends on the phone’s retail price, payment schedule, credits, and the specific agreement.

Carrier locks and T-Mobile

Apple’s shopping help says an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program is locked to that carrier until the device is paid in full. The cited statement addresses the device-financing status; separate carrier policies can govern when and how an unlock is processed after payoff.

Compare total cost, not the monthly headline

Use this cost formula

For each option, calculate:

Total cost before your next upgrade = all device installments or lease payments + taxes + AppleCare+ or carrier add-on fees + required service-plan costs + any payoff required to leave early − trade-in credits you are realistically qualified to receive.

Do not subtract a trade-in amount until you have checked the exact model, storage tier, condition, account status, and service-plan requirements. A credit shown in an advertisement may be spread over many monthly bills and may disappear if you change plans or cancel service.

Compare the same ownership window

Choose a period that matches your behavior: one year for annual upgraders, two years for people who normally keep a phone through a full cycle, or the full carrier term if you intend to keep the device. Then record the payments that occur inside that period. Comparing a 12-month Apple path with a carrier promotion that pays credits over 36 months will otherwise make the carrier option look cheaper than it is for someone who leaves after a year.

Separate device cost from connectivity cost

A required unlimited plan is a service expense, not a reduction in the phone’s retail price. Include it when the carrier requires that plan to receive credits, but also calculate what you would pay for service with your preferred provider. This reveals whether the “free” or heavily discounted phone is actually offset by a more expensive plan.

Trade-ins, condition, and damage

Apple iPhone Upgrade Program condition test

Before an iPhone Upgrade Program upgrade, verify all four practical tests: the phone powers on, holds a charge, has an intact functioning display, and has no breaks or cracks. Apple also requires continuous AppleCare+ coverage. A phone that fails one of these checks can prevent the standard upgrade or require a different resolution.

Lease damage assessment

With Apple Upgrade leasing, the device is assessed when returned. Apple says damage can trigger an AppleCare service fee after assessment. Do not assume that paying the normal lease amount covers cracked glass, a nonfunctioning display, or other damage.

Carrier promotion condition rules

Carrier trade-in promotions can be stricter or simply different. The eligible model, condition, return window, and required service plan are set by the promotion. Photograph the phone’s condition, back up and erase it, retain the shipping or handoff receipt, and save the promotion terms until all credits have posted. Those steps do not change eligibility, but they give you records if a promised credit is missing.

Switching carriers while you are still paying

Apple Upgrade lease: unlocked, but not payment-free

Apple says a leased iPhone is always unlocked, subject to carrier terms, so you can switch carriers while the lease is active. Switching does not cancel your lease obligation. Continue the lease payments or follow the early-upgrade and return process required by the lease.

Apple iPhone Upgrade Program installment loan

The iPhone Upgrade Program’s upgrade event involves returning the old phone, opening a new 24-month 0% APR loan, and having Apple pay the old loan’s remaining balance after the first payment on the new loan. If you simply move your cellular service without upgrading, the installment loan remains in place; check the account terms before assuming that a carrier change affects the financing.

Carrier-financed iPhone: payoff first

Under Apple’s cited shopping-help guidance, phones financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon remain locked until paid in full. Leaving before payoff can therefore require one of three outcomes: keep paying the old carrier while using another service arrangement if permitted, pay the remaining device balance immediately, or meet the carrier’s own unlock and early-upgrade conditions.

Promotional bill credits create an additional exit risk. If credits were scheduled for future months, canceling or changing to an ineligible plan can stop them. Add the lost future credits to your switching cost when comparing offers.

Which option fits your upgrade pattern?

Choose the iPhone Upgrade Program when predictability matters

  • You want a defined upgrade point at 12 equivalent payments.
  • You can keep AppleCare+ continuously and protect the phone from breaks, cracks, and power or display failures.
  • You prefer a 0% APR Apple loan and are comfortable with a new credit check each time you upgrade.
  • You expect to return the phone rather than keep it after upgrading.

Choose Apple Upgrade leasing when carrier flexibility is central

  • You want a 12- or 24-month lease structure.
  • You value Apple’s stated unlocked status for leased iPhones.
  • You understand that early upgrading can require the remaining lease payments and taxes.
  • You can absorb a possible AppleCare service fee if the returned phone is damaged.

Choose a carrier installment plan when the complete promotion works for you

  • You intend to keep the qualifying service plan for the entire credit period.
  • Your trade-in meets the exact model and condition rules.
  • You are comfortable with the phone remaining carrier-locked until payoff.
  • The carrier’s early-upgrade threshold matches your expected replacement date without an expensive payoff.

How to calculate your personal break-even point

  1. Write the phone’s full retail price and storage tier for each offer.
  2. List the monthly device payment before credits.
  3. List each credit, the number of months it lasts, and the conditions that can end it.
  4. Add AppleCare+, the carrier’s early-upgrade feature, or any other device add-on as a separate line.
  5. Add taxes and the required service-plan cost for the months you will actually remain enrolled.
  6. For a switch scenario, add the payoff quote and subtract only credits that have already posted. Treat future credits as lost unless the carrier confirms they transfer.
  7. For an upgrade scenario, add any required remaining payments, return-related fee, or damage assessment.
  8. Divide the resulting total by the number of months you expect to use the phone. This gives an effective monthly cost for your behavior, not merely the advertised installment.

Run the calculation twice: once assuming the phone remains in perfect qualifying condition and once assuming it needs a paid repair or service fee. The second result shows how much condition risk matters to your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing an upgrade feature with ownership: an early-upgrade add-on can let you return a phone sooner, but it does not pay down the device balance. AT&T’s cited $10 monthly feature is an example.
  • Treating a trade-in credit as cash: credits may arrive over future bills and can stop when eligibility changes.
  • Ignoring AppleCare+ requirements: the iPhone Upgrade Program requires continuous coverage, not a one-time enrollment that you can cancel after purchase.
  • Assuming every “annual upgrade” claim is equivalent: Apple’s 12-payment threshold, Apple Upgrade’s lease terms, AT&T’s one-payment feature, and Verizon’s 50%-paid rule are materially different.
  • Forgetting the lock: a carrier-financed iPhone may remain locked until paid in full even when the monthly payment resembles Apple’s.
  • Skipping the return condition check: cracked glass, a failed display, poor battery behavior, or a phone that will not power on can change the upgrade cost.
  • Comparing different service plans: a device discount tied to an expensive unlimited plan is not comparable with an unlocked-device price until the service costs are included.

A practical decision checklist

  1. How long will you keep this phone before replacing it: roughly one year, two years, or the full installment term?
  2. Do you need to change carriers before the device is paid off?
  3. Can you maintain AppleCare+ and keep the phone free of cracks and major damage?
  4. Will you qualify for the advertised trade-in model, condition, and service-plan requirements?
  5. What is the exact early-upgrade threshold: 12 equivalent payments, a lease-term rule, one payment plus a fee, or 50% of retail price?
  6. What balance and future credits would remain if you left next month?
  7. Are you comfortable with a new credit check when using the iPhone Upgrade Program?

If the answers point to frequent upgrades and carrier flexibility, Apple’s upgrade arrangements are easier to model. If the answers point to staying with one carrier and retaining its qualifying plan through the full credit period, a carrier promotion may reduce the net device cost. Neither result is automatic: the phone’s condition, service plan, credit qualification, storage tier, taxes, and current promotion determine the actual break-even point.
