Verdict: The 2021 10.2-inch iPad (9th generation) remains a sensible low-cost tablet for browsing, streaming, reading, schoolwork, video calls and handwritten notes—provided you buy it at a substantial discount to newer iPads. Its A13 Bionic chip, 64GB starting storage, Center Stage camera and support for Apple Pencil (1st generation) cover everyday jobs well. The trade-offs are an older Home-button design, Lightning instead of USB-C, a basic rear camera, fixed storage and an older accessory system.
What the iPad 9th generation is
Apple introduced this iPad in September 2021 as its entry-level model. It has a 10.2-inch Retina IPS display, an A13 Bionic processor, a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage, an 8MP rear camera and either 64GB or 256GB of built-in storage. You can buy it as a Wi-Fi model or as Wi-Fi + Cellular.

Because the tablet is an older generation, the sensible purchase test today is whether the actual price and condition are clearly better than those of a newer iPad with the features you need.

It is best understood as a practical general-purpose tablet rather than a premium laptop replacement, camera, or high-end creative workstation. The hardware is still capable for ordinary tasks, but several parts of the design date from an earlier iPad generation.

The main advantages
A13 Bionic is still quick for everyday tablet work
The A13 Bionic is a substantial step up from the A12-based entry-level iPad it replaced. For a 2021 entry model, it brought enough processing capability for web browsing with multiple tabs, email, documents, video calls, streaming services, reading apps and ordinary games. Apps open and respond promptly when the tablet is in good condition, and the chip gives the iPad more headroom than the previous entry model.
That does not make it equivalent to a current premium iPad. Demanding 3D games, sustained 4K video work, large layered illustrations and other workloads that keep the processor busy for long periods are better matched with newer hardware. For the basic productivity and entertainment jobs most people assign to an inexpensive tablet, however, the A13 remains a useful strength.
The front camera makes calls more convenient
The 12MP Ultra Wide front camera is the biggest camera improvement in this generation. Center Stage uses the wide field of view and software tracking to keep people framed during supported video calls. If you move around, another person joins the frame, or you use the iPad from a slightly awkward position, the camera can adjust the composition automatically.

Center Stage depends on the calling app supporting the feature; it is not a guarantee that every video application will behave identically. The front camera is also useful for online classes, remote meetings and family calls where framing matters more than photographic detail.
64GB makes the entry model more usable
Apple doubled the previous generation’s starting storage and offered 64GB or 256GB capacities. The 64GB model is adequate for streaming-first use, documents, a moderate app library and photos that are mostly stored in the cloud. The 256GB version is a better fit if you download films, keep many games, store large creative files or intend to keep the tablet for years.
Storage cannot be expanded with a microSD card. Choose the capacity at purchase rather than assuming you can add inexpensive removable storage later.

It supports practical handwriting and typing accessories
Apple Pencil (1st generation) support turns the tablet into a useful note-taking surface for class notes, annotations, diagrams and simple drawings. The iPad Smart Keyboard provides a compact way to type assignments, messages and short documents without carrying a separate Bluetooth keyboard.

True Tone helps the display look comfortable in changing light
The 10.2-inch Retina IPS panel has a 2160×1620 resolution and True Tone. True Tone adjusts the display’s color temperature to the surrounding light, which can make reading feel more natural when you move between indoor lighting conditions. Text is sharp enough for documents and web pages, and the size provides more working room than a phone.
This is a conventional LCD panel, not a reason to buy the iPad for premium visual quality. Buyers who prioritize the thinnest bezels, a more modern panel construction or other display refinements should compare newer models directly.
Battery life is broadly all-day for ordinary use
Apple rates the Wi-Fi model for up to 10 hours of web browsing or video playback. Macworld measured about eight hours in a controlled Geekbench 4 battery-drain test at 200 nits and described normal use as roughly all day. These figures are not interchangeable promises: brightness, cellular use, game load, wireless activity, battery age and background apps all change runtime.
A new or healthy unit should handle a school day of mixed reading, browsing and video calls more comfortably than a heavily worn refurbished unit. Check battery condition and the seller’s warranty when buying used, because the original rating does not describe every second-hand battery.

The compromises to understand before buying
Older body, large bezels and a Home button
The 10.2-inch chassis retains a physical Home button and larger bezels rather than the edge-to-edge appearance of newer iPads. The bezels provide a place to hold the tablet without touching the screen, but they make the device look and feel older and leave less display area for a given overall footprint.
The familiar button can be an advantage for people who prefer a hardware control or are buying for a child or relative who already knows this layout. It is a disadvantage if you want the newer visual design or the most compact tablet possible.
Lightning is less convenient in a USB-C household
The port is Lightning. If your other devices, hubs, drives and chargers use USB-C, you will need a separate cable or adapter for the iPad. That matters when transferring files, connecting accessories or keeping one charger for several devices. It does not prevent normal charging and syncing, but it makes the tablet less convenient in a newer accessory ecosystem.

The rear camera is for utility, not photography
The rear camera is an 8MP wide unit. It is suitable for scanning a worksheet, photographing a receipt, capturing a whiteboard or taking an occasional casual picture in good light. It is not a compelling choice for someone who wants a tablet primarily for photography or advanced video capture.
The front camera is the more important camera on this model because Center Stage improves calls. Do not let the stronger front-camera specification imply that the rear camera received the same upgrade.
First-generation Pencil charging is an older workflow
Apple Pencil (1st generation) uses the older charging and pairing arrangement associated with Lightning iPads. It lacks the charging and attachment experience found on newer Pencil systems. If you already own a different Pencil generation, verify compatibility before buying the tablet or accessory.

Fixed storage makes the 64GB decision important
System files and applications consume part of the advertised capacity, and downloaded video, games, photos and creative projects can fill the remainder quickly. A 64GB buyer who keeps most content online may be comfortable; someone who travels with offline media or keeps large files locally should favor 256GB.
How it performs for common buyers
Students
The iPad works well for reading digital textbooks, viewing course portals, writing short assignments, joining video classes and marking up PDFs with Apple Pencil. The Smart Keyboard can handle notes and essays, but its compact layout is not a full desktop keyboard replacement for long daily writing. Students should budget for the Pencil, keyboard and a protective case if those are necessary, because the tablet’s base price does not establish that every accessory is included.
Streaming and reading
The 10.2-inch screen, True Tone and all-day-class battery behavior suit video streaming, ebooks, comics and web reading. The 2160×1620 resolution keeps text clear, while the larger bezels can provide a steady grip in bed or on a sofa. The main limitation is storage: downloaded shows and films favor the 256GB model, whereas a streaming-first user can make 64GB work.
Note-taking and drawing
Apple Pencil support makes handwritten notes, signatures, diagrams and light drawing practical. It is a strong reason to choose this iPad over a tablet that lacks a compatible active stylus. Artists who need a larger canvas, more advanced display characteristics or sustained professional workloads should look at newer and higher-tier iPads before committing.
Video calls
The 12MP Ultra Wide front camera and Center Stage are the model’s standout feature for calls. They are particularly useful when the iPad is placed on a desk and the user moves during a lesson or meeting. The feature still depends on app support, and camera quality in a dark room will depend on the room’s lighting.
Office and household tasks
Email, calendars, web forms, recipes, banking sites, document review and light spreadsheet work are within the tablet’s comfort zone. Multitasking is possible, but the screen and accessory setup do not replace a full laptop for extensive keyboard work, complex desktop software or large file-management tasks.

Should you choose 64GB or 256GB?

There is no universally correct capacity. Estimate what you will keep on the device when offline, then leave room for future apps and system data. Cellular connectivity does not add storage; it only changes how the iPad reaches the internet away from Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular?
The Wi-Fi version is sufficient for a home, school or office with reliable wireless access and is usually the simpler value choice. Wi-Fi + Cellular is useful for travel, commuting, field work or any routine situation where tethering a phone would be inconvenient. Confirm the exact cellular model, supported network bands and any carrier requirements before buying an imported or second-hand unit.
When a newer iPad is the better choice
Compare a newer model instead when any of the following is central to your decision:
- You want USB-C for shared chargers, hubs or external accessories.
- You prefer a thin-bezel, edge-to-edge design without a traditional Home button.
- You need a more premium display experience or newer panel construction.
- You expect stronger rear-camera capability.
- You want compatibility with a newer Apple Pencil generation.
- You regularly perform demanding creative, gaming or video-production work.
- The price difference after adding a Pencil, keyboard and warranty is small.
These are comparison priorities rather than a claim that one particular newer model has a specific specification. Check the current model’s processor, display, storage, camera, port, accessory support, cellular options, weight and battery results under comparable tests.
How to evaluate a discounted or renewed unit
A lower price only helps if the condition is acceptable. Before paying, verify:
- Exact configuration: Confirm ninth generation, 64GB or 256GB, and Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular.
- Physical condition: Inspect the screen for cracks, bright spots and deep scratches, and check that the Home button responds consistently.
- Battery and charging: Ask about battery health or return rights, then confirm that the Lightning port charges reliably.
- Activation status: The seller must remove their Apple account and disable activation lock before delivery or handover.
- Accessories: Confirm whether the charger, cable, Apple Pencil (1st generation), Smart Keyboard and case are actually included.
- Warranty and returns: A renewed tablet’s battery, cosmetic grade, warranty period and seller support can differ substantially from one listing to another.
- Camera and speakers: Test a video call or camera preview, Center Stage in a supported app, microphones and speakers before the return window closes.

Buy the ninth-generation iPad when you want a familiar, inexpensive iPad for everyday computing and the price is meaningfully below newer alternatives. The combination of A13 performance, 64GB minimum storage, a capable front camera, Pencil support and practical battery life makes it especially suitable for students, streamers, readers and households that need straightforward tablet access.
Skip it for a newer iPad when USB-C, a modern thin-bezel design, premium display characteristics, newer Pencil support, stronger rear-camera work or sustained high-performance tasks matter more than the lowest purchase price. For a used or renewed example, condition, battery health, included accessories and warranty can change the value as much as the model number.
