Apple Intelligence summarized a series of breakup texts as: “No longer in a relationship; wants belongings from the apartment.” The line, shared by software developer Nick Spreen, made an intimate exchange sound like a checklist. It is a striking reported example of how much tone can disappear when messages are compressed—not evidence of how often Apple’s summaries get sensitive conversations wrong.
What did Apple’s AI say about the breakup texts?
Futurism reported on October 11, 2024, that Spreen shared a screenshot of an Apple Intelligence summary reading: “No longer in a relationship; wants belongings from the apartment.” The outlet said Spreen confirmed the screenshot was real and described the messages as roughly along the lines of “I can’t believe you just did that, we’re done, I want my stuff.” Futurism’s report says the post appeared the day before its article.

The summary captured the practical facts—relationship ended, belongings wanted—while stripping away the anger and hurt suggested by the reported texts. That contrast is what made the wording feel so brutal: not an insult, but an emotionally flat rendering of an emotional exchange.

Futurism, recounting Spreen’s conversation with Ars Technica, reported that he felt the summary added distance, which he did not necessarily consider a bad thing. He also described the experience as “unreal and dystopian.” The comments are reported by Futurism; they should not be mistaken for a direct quotation checked against the original interview.

What this incident does—and does not—show
Message summaries are designed to condense a longer conversation into a short notification-sized account. In this case, the compression made the exchange easier to scan but flattened its emotional register. A reader could reasonably find that jarring, especially when the source messages concern a breakup.
But one screenshot cannot establish a system-wide pattern. The report is an anecdote, not a controlled evaluation of summary accuracy, a measure of user impact, or evidence of how frequently emotionally sensitive messages are rendered this way. It illustrates a trade-off inherent in compression: a short summary may preserve the apparent logistics while losing context and tone.

Can you turn off iPhone message summaries?
Apple’s cited support material establishes that summaries in Messages are an Apple Intelligence feature, but it does not establish current step-by-step settings for disabling them. Settings and controls can change across software versions, so consult Apple’s current documentation for your device and iOS version rather than relying on an unverified menu path.
