Sysdiff.exe was a Windows NT 4.0 application-packaging utility, not a whole-disk cloning tool. Its documented workflow was to capture a clean installation with SNAP, record application changes with DIFF, and integrate those changes into unattended setup with INF. The historical WinNT Magazine article named “12 Steps to Cloning Windows NT Systems with SYSDIFF.EXE” is cited in a 2001 HP Laboratories report, but its original page is not available here; the exact twelve steps cannot be verified. The procedure below follows Microsoft’s documented Sysdiff process instead.
What Sysdiff.exe did—and what it did not do
Microsoft describes Sysdiff.exe as a Windows NT 4.0-only utility for profiling and installing applications on Windows NT 4.0 systems. It was distributed with the Windows Resource Kit. Rather than duplicate every sector of a prepared disk, Sysdiff recorded application-related changes so they could be incorporated into a fresh Windows NT setup.
That distinction matters when interpreting the word “cloning.” A disk-imaging tool copies a prepared disk image; Sysdiff packaged changes made by installing applications and replayed them as part of setup. The methods therefore differ in what they copy, whether the target goes through a fresh OS setup, and the identity, hardware, rollback, and troubleshooting questions involved. The available descriptions do not establish a universal answer for those latter concerns, so Sysdiff should not be treated as a substitute for a disk-imaging plan.
Microsoft’s documented workflow is three phases, not a verified twelve-step recipe. The original WinNT Magazine page cited by HP Laboratories is not retrievable, so an exact reconstruction of its numbered instructions would be speculative.

The documented SNAP, DIFF, INF workflow
- SNAP: Start with a fresh Windows NT 4.0 installation and take its initial system snapshot.
- DIFF: Install the application or applications you intend to package, then compare the changed system with the SNAP image to create a difference file.
- INF: Incorporate the application installation into unattended Windows NT setup using the difference file.
This sequence describes application deployment through Windows NT setup. It is not guidance for current Windows versions, and the available documentation does not provide a verified command-line recipe for every Resource Kit release or deployment environment.

Per-user registry data
Sysdiff does not support registry values in HKEY_USER hives. If an application keeps necessary settings there, the package may not capture or apply those values as intended; the documented workflow should not be assumed to reproduce that per-user configuration.
Low disk space during /APPLY
A SYSDIFF /APPLY operation can hang when the target computer has little or no free disk space. Check available space and free capacity before trying to apply the difference file again.
Service packs
Sysdiff cannot be used to apply a Windows NT service pack. Microsoft directs administrators to use the service pack’s own unattended Update.exe procedure instead.
Recommended Free Tools
INI section ordering
Sysdiff can alphabetize INI-file section headers. If an application depends on their original order, the resulting package may fail. Microsoft’s documented workaround is to apply the package and then copy the correct, non-alphabetized INI files over the generated files.
When this procedure is relevant
Use the Sysdiff workflow only when maintaining a Windows NT 4.0-era setup process that depends on the Resource Kit utility and its documented behavior. It is historical deployment documentation, not a current Windows deployment recommendation. For a present-day deployment, select a supported imaging or application-deployment method appropriate to the operating system and hardware; Sysdiff’s NT 4.0 procedure does not establish how those modern tools handle identity, hardware compatibility, or rollback.
