Apple Intelligence usually fails for one of four reasons: the device is not eligible, the operating system is too old, the device and Siri languages do not match, or the on-device models cannot finish downloading because of storage, network, power, or regional restrictions. Work through compatibility first, then software, language, downloading, storage, and region checks; changing settings cannot make an unsupported iPhone work.
Start with the hardware check
Apple Intelligence runs partly on local models, so it requires specific processors and memory. An iPhone 15 or 15 Plus, for example, is not made eligible merely by installing a new iOS release. Apple’s supported list starts with iPhone 15 Pro models and includes iPhone 16 models and later.

To identify an iPhone or iPad model, open Settings > General > About and read Model Name. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac and check whether the chip is Apple silicon. On Apple Vision Pro, open Settings > General > About. Check the watch’s paired iPhone as well as the watch itself when a watch feature is missing.

What an incompatible device looks like
- No Apple Intelligence switch: Settings may show Siri settings but no Apple Intelligence controls.
- Features remain unavailable after updating: A current OS cannot add the required processor or memory.
- Only some devices in a household work: This is expected when one device is an iPhone 15 Pro or newer while another is a regular iPhone 15 or an older model.
If the exact model is not on Apple’s supported list, stop troubleshooting software. The practical choices are to keep using the device without Apple Intelligence or move to eligible hardware. Before buying anything, compare the model and processor, the operating-system version it can run, free storage after cleanup, language support, region eligibility, and—for Apple Watch features—the need for a nearby compatible iPhone.

Install the required software
Apple’s initial requirements documentation listed iOS 18.1 or later, iPadOS 18.1 or later, macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, visionOS 2.4 or later, and watchOS 11 or later. Apple’s current iPhone guidance is written for iOS 27 or later. These references describe different points in the rollout, so use the latest supported release offered for your particular device rather than treating the original 18.1 baseline as a permanent guarantee.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone or iPad.
- On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- On Apple Vision Pro, open Settings > General > Software Update.
- For Apple Watch, open the Watch app on the paired iPhone, choose General > Software Update, and install the offered watchOS update.
- Install the newest release that Apple offers for that hardware. Keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi during a major update.
After updating, restart the device once. Then open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence if the control is present. A restart does not bypass an unsupported model, but it can clear a stalled setup state after an update has completed.
Why an update does not make the feature appear immediately
The operating-system update and the on-device model download are separate steps. Apple says the models download after updating, and recommends Wi-Fi and power while that happens. Until the download finishes, Apple Intelligence can show as unavailable even though the OS version is correct.

Apple requires the device language and Siri language to be identical and supported. A mismatch—such as an iPhone set to English with Siri set to another language—can prevent activation even on eligible hardware.

- Open Settings > General > Language & Region and note the iPhone or iPad language.
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Settings > Siri & Search on an older interface) and check Language.
- Set Siri to the same supported language used by the device.
- Leave the device on Wi-Fi and power while the new Siri language downloads.
- Return to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and enable Apple Intelligence after the download completes.
Changing Siri language can temporarily disable Apple Intelligence. Apple states that the feature may remain unavailable until the new Siri language fully downloads and matches the device language. Do not repeatedly switch languages while the download is in progress; wait for it to finish, then check the setting again.
Language troubleshooting cases
- The language is not offered: It may not be supported for Apple Intelligence on that platform or release. Installing another update cannot guarantee support for every language.
- The two menus appear to match but the feature is still off: Check for a pending Siri-language download, restart after it completes, and verify the region requirement in the next section.
- You changed languages while traveling: Restore the supported language pair before testing other settings. A partially downloaded language can leave the feature unavailable.
Let the on-device models download
Apple Intelligence uses downloadable on-device models. A newly updated device therefore needs time to prepare files before writing tools, image features, summaries, or other Apple Intelligence controls become ready. The exact duration depends on the connection and Apple’s current model package; Apple does not publish a universal completion time.
- Connect the device to a reliable Wi-Fi network rather than relying on a cellular connection.
- Plug it into power, especially during the first setup after an OS update.
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and look for a download or preparation status.
- Leave the device unlocked or available as instructed by the on-screen status, and avoid interrupting the connection.
- Check again later. If the status does not change, restart once, reconnect to Wi-Fi and power, and repeat the check.
Do not judge availability immediately after an update. A correct model, software version, and language pair can still show a disabled feature while the package is downloading.
Free enough storage for Apple Intelligence
Storage means free space on the device, not the capacity printed on the box. Apple documents a requirement of 7 GB for the earlier release. Its newer requirements documentation says most supported devices may need up to 8 GB, while certain newer high-memory models may need up to 14 GB. These are model-package requirements; your device also needs working room for iOS or iPadOS updates, apps, photos, and temporary files.

- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
- On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Remove or move large videos, downloaded media, unused apps, and old message attachments until the required free space is available.
- Empty the relevant Recently Deleted locations in Photos and Files if they still occupy space.
- Restart, reconnect to Wi-Fi and power, and return to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
Safe ways to create space
- Use the storage screen’s recommendations before deleting personal files manually.
- Offload an app when you want to remove its app package while retaining its documents and data for a later reinstall.
- Transfer large recordings and photos to a separately managed archive, then confirm the copies before deleting local originals.
- Do not delete an app that contains irreplaceable local data unless you have verified a backup.
If the storage screen shows enough free space but the download still fails, verify that the space is truly available rather than occupied by a pending update, then restart and try again on power and Wi-Fi. Apple’s published figures describe model storage and do not guarantee a particular download speed or completion time.
Check location and Apple Account region
Availability can depend on both where the device is being used and the country or region assigned to the Apple Account. Apple documents a specific China mainland restriction: for supported devices purchased outside China mainland, Apple Intelligence will not currently work when the device is in China mainland and the Apple Account country or region is also China mainland.
- Open Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region on iPhone or iPad and review the account region.
- Check the device’s physical location. A supported device can still be restricted when it is being used in China mainland under the condition Apple describes.
- If you recently changed regions, allow account and service changes to settle before testing. Do not change country or region solely as a quick workaround; Apple may require that subscriptions, payment methods, balances, and other account obligations be resolved first.
- After confirming the region and location, reconnect to Wi-Fi, restart, and check Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
Region eligibility is separate from language eligibility. A supported language does not override a regional restriction, and being outside a restricted region does not make an unsupported language available.

Follow the checks in this order so that a later setting does not hide an earlier incompatibility.

- Identify the exact model. Confirm the iPhone, iPad, Mac chip, Vision Pro, or Apple Watch pairing against Apple’s supported hardware list.
- Update the operating system. Install the latest supported release offered for that device. The initial baseline was iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1, visionOS 2.4, or watchOS 11, while current iPhone guidance uses iOS 27 or later.
- Turn on the feature. Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and enable Apple Intelligence when the switch is available.
- Match languages. Set the device and Siri to the same supported language and wait for any language download to finish.
- Complete the model download. Use Wi-Fi and power and allow the post-update preparation to finish.
- Check free storage. Reserve 7 GB for the earlier release, up to 8 GB for most newer supported devices, or up to 14 GB for specified newer high-memory models, then leave additional room for the operating system and ordinary use.
- Check region and location. Review the Apple Account country or region and whether the device is in China mainland, where Apple documents the combined restriction described above.
- Test one feature. Try a feature that is available on your platform after the status changes to ready. If only one app is affected, update that app and check its permissions rather than repeating the entire setup.
What to do when the switch is still missing
The device is not on the supported list
No setting can add the required processor or memory. Continue using the current device without Apple Intelligence or compare an upgrade using the hardware, OS, storage, language, region, and Apple Watch-pairing criteria.
The device qualifies but the switch is absent
Install the newest supported OS, restart, verify the matching language pair, and check storage. If the model download has not started, leave the device on Wi-Fi and power and check again later.
The switch exists but features say unavailable
Look for a pending model or language download first. Then verify free storage and region. A feature can remain unavailable during either download even though the main Apple Intelligence control is visible.

Confirm that the watch is paired with a compatible iPhone, that both devices meet their software requirements, and that the iPhone is nearby when the feature requires it. Updating only the watch does not remove an iPhone-side compatibility requirement.

Everything appears correct but setup never completes
Use a different reliable Wi-Fi network, keep the device charging, and restart once. Recheck language and storage after the restart. If the hardware, software, language, storage, and region all qualify but the service remains unavailable, contact Apple Support with the exact model, OS build, language pair, account region, available storage, and the status message shown on screen; those details distinguish an eligibility issue from a stalled download.
How to decide whether to upgrade
Upgrade only after confirming that the current device is genuinely ineligible or cannot meet the software and storage requirements. Use this comparison before spending money:

The fastest reliable diagnosis is therefore not a factory reset. It is an eligibility audit: model first, OS second, matching languages third, downloads and storage fourth, and region last. A reset cannot change any of those underlying requirements.
