Short answer: As of 20 October 2026, Apple Intelligence does not work on supported devices purchased in mainland China. A compatible device bought elsewhere is also blocked when you are physically in mainland China and your Apple Account country or region is set to mainland China. Changing the iPhone language alone cannot bypass that rule.
Outside those conditions, activation still depends on an eligible model, the current operating system, enough local storage, and matching device and Siri languages. Apple has not published a mainland-China launch date in its current support documentation.

What Apple’s China rule actually says
Apple’s current support guidance is specific to mainland China. It does not establish the status of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, or other markets, so you should not apply this policy to those locations without separate confirmation.

- A supported Apple device purchased in mainland China cannot currently use Apple Intelligence.
- A supported device purchased outside mainland China also cannot currently use Apple Intelligence when the user is in mainland China and the Apple Account country or region is set to mainland China.
The second rule is conjunctive: Apple describes both the physical location and the Apple Account region. The documentation does not promise that every other combination will work, so an imported iPhone should not be treated as automatically eligible merely because it was bought abroad.

Apple says that once Apple Intelligence becomes available in mainland China, compatible devices that were purchased previously will be able to activate and use a core set of features there. Apple also says new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while it works through regulatory requirements. The cited Apple pages give no release date.
Seven checks that determine eligibility
Use these checks in order. A failure at an earlier stage cannot be fixed by changing a later setting.

Which devices support Apple Intelligence
Apple’s current iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 requirements include the following hardware. Compatibility does not override the mainland-China availability rule.

If you are buying hardware specifically for Apple Intelligence, Apple’s named entry points include an iPhone 16 or later, an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, an iPad with M1 or later, or a Mac with M1 or later. Buying one of these devices does not, by itself, make Apple Intelligence available in mainland China.
Operating-system and storage requirements
The current software baseline is iOS 27 for iPhone, iPadOS 27 for iPad, macOS 27 (Golden Gate) for Mac, watchOS 27 for Apple Watch, and visionOS 27 for Apple Vision Pro. Update the device before troubleshooting language or account settings; a compatible model on an older release still fails the requirement.
Apple downloads models to local storage. Its published figures are maximum amounts, not a promise that every device will consume exactly that number:

These figures describe space reserved for Apple Intelligence resources. Keep additional free space for normal system updates and apps; Apple’s support figures do not state a separate recommended buffer.
Language settings: what must match
Apple requires the device language and Siri language to be set to the same supported language. On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > General > Language & Region for the device language and Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Language for Siri. On Mac, review System Settings > General > Language & Region and System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Menu names can vary slightly by platform release.
For many iPhone, iPad, and Mac features on the current systems, Apple lists these languages: English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Feature coverage still varies by platform, language, and region, so a language appearing on the list does not mean every Apple Intelligence function is available in that language.

If you change Siri’s language, Apple warns that Apple Intelligence may become unavailable while the new language downloads. Wait for the download to finish, then confirm that the device and Siri languages match exactly. Switching only the device language, without changing Siri to the same language, does not satisfy the requirement and cannot override China’s regional rule.

Can changing the Apple Account region unlock Apple Intelligence?
Changing the account region is not a universal unlock. For an imported device in mainland China, Apple’s stated restriction applies when both your physical location and Apple Account region are mainland China. A region change may alter which services are eligible, but Apple does not say that changing the account region alone activates Apple Intelligence in mainland China, and it cannot make a mainland-China purchase eligible under the current rule.

Before changing a region, verify the exact service and location combination you need. Apple’s support wording establishes the mainland-China conditions but does not publish a guarantee for every possible pairing of location, purchase market, and account region.

Will Apple Intelligence work when you travel to China?
Apple says Apple Intelligence continues to work when users travel to other regions after activation, subject to feature and regional availability. That statement addresses an already activated feature. It should not be read as a promise that an unactivated device will activate while you are in mainland China, particularly when the Apple Account region is mainland China.
Why an imported iPhone can still show no Apple Intelligence
An overseas purchase is only one condition. The phone can still fail because you are currently in mainland China with a mainland-China account, the model is not an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max or iPhone 16-or-later family, the system is below iOS 27, the device and Siri languages differ, or the model download has not completed. Check those conditions separately instead of assuming the import market guarantees access.
Apple Intelligence versus Siri AI
Siri AI is a separate beta feature, not a synonym for the entire Apple Intelligence system. It requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device, matching supported device and Siri languages, and an eligible Apple Account region. Apple currently lists Siri AI in English and states: “Siri AI will not currently work if your Apple Account region is in mainland China.” Apple Support published that guidance on 22 September 2026.
Therefore, a configuration might meet the hardware and language requirements for some Apple Intelligence features yet still be ineligible for Siri AI because of the account region. Treat Siri AI as its own regional and language check.
Practical setup and troubleshooting procedure
- Confirm the purchase market. Determine whether Apple considers the device a mainland-China purchase. If it is, current software and language changes cannot make Apple Intelligence available.
- Record your current location and account region. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region. The exact path may vary by release. If you are in mainland China and the account region is mainland China, an imported device meets Apple’s stated blocked combination.
- Identify the exact model. Check Settings > General > About and compare the model with Apple’s supported list. “iPhone 15” is not equivalent to “iPhone 15 Pro”; the Pro designation matters.
- Install the required OS. Use Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone or iPad, System Settings > General > Software Update on Mac, and the corresponding Watch or Vision Pro update controls. The required baseline is version 27 for the relevant platform.
- Align languages. Set the device and Siri to one supported language. If Siri starts downloading language data, keep the device connected and wait until the download completes.
- Free local storage. Compare available space with Apple’s maximum model allowance: up to 14 GB for the specified high-memory devices, up to 8 GB for other supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro models, and up to 1.5 GB on Apple Watch.
- Recheck activation after prerequisites finish. If the device is outside mainland China and the account region is eligible, allow time for model downloads and then revisit the Apple Intelligence settings. If the device is in Apple’s blocked China combination, further local changes will not resolve it.
What is known about availability in mainland China
Apple has committed only to future availability of a core set of Apple Intelligence features on previously purchased compatible devices once the service becomes available in mainland China. It also says new features will not be available there while regulatory requirements are being addressed. No launch date appears in the cited Apple support pages as of 20 October 2026, so claims that give a specific date go beyond Apple’s published information.
