Choose Apple Home if your household is built around iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Siri and a mix of HomeKit or Matter accessories. Choose ADT Control if you have an ADT security installation and want one app for arming, disarming, alarms, cameras, locks, lighting and climate features tied to that system.
They are not interchangeable security services. Apple Home is a general smart-home controller; ADT Control is the app interface for ADT Command equipment and services. A home can use both, but what can be shared depends on the ADT hardware, compatible accessories and any supported bridge or integration.

Apple Home vs. ADT Control at a glance
| Question | Apple Home | ADT Control |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Control compatible smart-home accessories from Apple devices. | Operate an ADT security and automation system from a phone or tablet. |
| Typical controls | Lights, locks, thermostats, scenes, automations and supported cameras. | Arm/disarm, alarm status, sensor alerts, cameras, locks, lighting, climate and scenes. |
| Core ecosystem | Apple HomeKit and Matter accessories, with Apple hubs for remote features. | ADT Command/Control-compatible equipment and supported integrations. |
| Security response | Device control and notifications; it is not an ADT monitoring replacement. | Security-system workflows and, where included in the service, ADT monitoring integration. |
| Remote-control hardware | Apple TV 4K, HomePod or HomePod mini can act as a home hub for remote control and automation. | ADT-compatible security equipment, an active service relationship and internet/Wi-Fi for app functions. |
| Best default | Apple-centered, multi-brand smart homes. | Homes whose priority is operating an ADT installation. |
Apple describes Home as bringing compatible third-party accessories together across Apple devices (Apple Home app). ADT describes Control as the mobile interface for its Command platform (ADT Control). Those different foundations explain why one app cannot automatically replace the other.

The Home app is a control layer for compatible accessories rather than a security-company account. Apple’s app groups devices by room, lets you put important accessories in favorites, creates scenes and automations, and can display multiple camera feeds with activity notifications. You can operate the same home from an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Siri-enabled Apple device.

- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Compatibility is determined by the accessory’s standards and certification. Apple Home supports HomeKit accessories and, on iOS 16.1 and later, compatible devices using the Matter standard. Matter support allows an eligible accessory to be controlled through Apple Home, Siri and Control Center while remaining usable across other Matter-capable platforms. Apple’s developer documentation lists examples including lights, locks and thermostats (Apple Matter support in iOS).
Scenes and automations
A scene is a named set of actions, such as turning off lights and locking doors together. An automation runs actions when a supported trigger occurs, such as a time, a person arriving or a sensor event. The useful distinction is that Apple Home can coordinate products from several manufacturers when each product is compatible; you are not limited to one security vendor’s catalog.
Cameras and privacy features
Supported cameras can appear in Home alongside other accessories. Apple also documents HomeKit Secure Video as a supported camera use case, with activity notifications and viewing controlled through Apple devices (Apple Support: Intro to Home on iPhone). The exact recording and storage behavior depends on the camera and the Apple service configuration, so confirm those requirements for each model.
What ADT Control is designed to do
ADT Control is tied to an ADT Command installation. Its value comes from putting security status and selected home controls in the same service account. ADT lists remote arm and disarm, instant alerts when status changes or a door unlocks, remote lighting, door-lock control, climate scheduling, one-tap scenes and geofencing among its features (ADT Control).
Alarm and sensor workflows
When the central question is “Is my ADT system armed, and what happened at a door or sensor?”, Control is the relevant app. It can show status changes and send alerts, subject to the equipment, plan and notification settings on the account. An Apple Home scene can lock a compatible lock or turn off a light, but it does not become an ADT alarm account merely because both apps are installed.

Video, locks and climate
ADT’s apps information describes live camera streaming, recording and integrations with smart-home platforms such as Amazon Alexa (ADT Apps). A compatible ADT lock, thermostat or camera is therefore managed according to ADT’s supported equipment and service model, not simply by whether the product uses Wi-Fi. ADT also promotes using the app to control lights and set the temperature for your arrival home.
Connectivity requirement
ADT states that mobile notifications, remote control, video streaming and video recording require working internet and Wi-Fi. If the home network or the service connection is unavailable, those app functions may not work until connectivity is restored.
Can Apple Home replace ADT?
No, not as a like-for-like replacement. Apple Home can replace several day-to-day device-control functions: a compatible lock can be locked, a thermostat can be adjusted, lights can be automated and supported cameras can be viewed. It does not provide the ADT account, ADT-installed alarm panel or any professional monitoring relationship attached to an ADT service plan.
The practical test is the consequence of an event. If you only need a notification that a compatible door sensor opened, Apple Home may be sufficient for that device. If you need an ADT alarm workflow, ADT sensor status, ADT cameras and the response associated with an eligible monitoring plan, keep ADT Control as the primary security app.
- Use Apple Home alone when your devices are HomeKit/Matter compatible and you do not need ADT alarm or service controls.
- Use ADT Control alone when the ADT installation is the center of your security and automation setup.
- Use both when Apple devices and third-party Matter/HomeKit accessories are important, while ADT equipment still handles alarm and service functions.
Can ADT Control work with Apple Home?
Sometimes, but there is no universal “add ADT to Apple Home” switch. ADT Control operates ADT Command equipment; Apple Home accepts HomeKit or Matter accessories and supported integrations. Whether a camera, lock, thermostat or sensor can appear in both apps depends on its exact model, firmware, certification and the bridge or integration supported by ADT and Apple.

How to check a proposed setup
- Write down the exact model numbers of the ADT panel, cameras, locks, thermostat and sensors.
- Check ADT’s current compatibility information for that equipment and your service plan.
- Check whether the accessory is labeled for Apple HomeKit or Matter, rather than assuming that a generic Wi-Fi label means Apple Home support.
- Decide which app owns each critical action. Keep alarm arming, disarming and ADT alerts in Control unless the integration explicitly supports those functions elsewhere.
- Test every shared action: lock and unlock, camera live view, thermostat change, scene trigger and alert delivery. A device appearing in two apps does not guarantee that every command or status update is available in both.
Integration can be partial. For example, a shared lock may expose lock state but not every ADT automation; a camera may stream in one app but not offer the same recording controls in the other. Treat the manufacturer’s compatibility statement for the specific device as decisive.
Do you need an Apple TV or HomePod for Apple Home remotely?
For control while you are away and for many automations that must run when nobody is home, an Apple home hub is the relevant hardware. Apple identifies Apple TV 4K, HomePod and HomePod mini as devices that can make Apple devices a smart-home control center for remote monitoring and automation (Apple Home app).
Without a suitable hub, you can still use the Home app locally with compatible accessories, but remote access and some automation capabilities may not be available in the way you expect. Place the hub where it has reliable power and network access, then confirm in the Home app that it is connected and assigned to the correct home.
Choosing the hub
- Apple TV 4K: useful when the home already has an Apple TV and you want it to serve as the home hub.
- HomePod mini: a compact option for Siri control and home-hub duties.
- HomePod: combines Siri and speaker functions with the home-hub role.
The hub does not make an incompatible accessory compatible. It provides the Apple-side infrastructure for remote control and automation after the accessory itself meets HomeKit or Matter requirements.
Which app controls ADT cameras, locks and thermostat?
| Device or task | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| ADT alarm arm/disarm | ADT Control | It is the ADT Command interface and understands the system’s security status. |
| ADT sensor-status alerts | ADT Control | ADT lists instant status-change and door-unlock alerts as Control features. |
| ADT camera live view or recording | ADT Control/ADT Apps | ADT documents streaming and recording for supported equipment; internet and Wi-Fi are required. |
| Apple HomeKit or Matter camera | Apple Home | Apple Home can show supported cameras and activity notifications. |
| ADT lock | ADT Control first | Control is the dependable place for an ADT-managed lock; Apple Home availability depends on the exact model and integration. |
| Apple-compatible lock | Apple Home | Use Home scenes, Siri or Control Center when the lock is certified for Apple Home. |
| ADT-compatible thermostat | ADT Control | ADT supports climate scheduling and remote temperature control for compatible installations. |
| Matter thermostat from another vendor | Apple Home | Use Apple Home when the thermostat is Matter-compatible and added to the Apple home. |
ADT also lists a Smart Thermostat product category, but availability and terms can vary by market and service package (ADT Smart Thermostats). Verify eligibility before purchasing or planning an automation around it.

Privacy and data model differences
Apple presents Home as an Apple-device-centered control experience and emphasizes encrypted handling for its smart-home features, including HomeKit Secure Video. That model is attractive if you prefer your everyday controls and camera access to stay within Apple’s account and device ecosystem.
ADT Control is a cloud-connected service app. Its remote notifications, controls and video functions depend on an ADT relationship, compatible equipment and an internet connection. That service model is useful when the app must connect home automation with an ADT security installation, but it also means account status, network availability and plan terms affect what you can do.
Neither model removes the need to secure accounts. Use a strong, unique account password, enable available multi-factor authentication, keep phones and hubs updated, and review who has permission to control locks, alarms and cameras.
Cost and equipment requirements
Apple Home has no single system price. You buy compatible accessories individually, and remote-control features generally call for an Apple TV 4K or HomePod-family hub. Matter can reduce platform lock-in for compatible products, but each accessory still has its own purchase price and capabilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteADT pricing cannot be reduced to one honest national figure. The total depends on the system package, installation, equipment, location, monitoring plan and contract. Obtain a location-specific quote and ask which app features, cameras, recordings, cellular backup and professional response are included. Do not assume that buying an ADT-branded accessory alone provides the same functions as an installed, active ADT system.
Questions to ask before committing
- Which exact devices are included, and which are optional?
- Does the quoted plan include professional monitoring or only self-monitoring notifications?
- Are video recording, remote access and cellular backup included or billed separately?
- What happens to equipment and app features if the service is canceled?
- Which devices can also be exposed to Apple Home, and which remain ADT-only?
Setup checklists
Set up Apple Home as your primary controller
- Update the iPhone, iPad and Apple hubs you intend to use. Matter support requires iOS 16.1 or later.
- Open the Home app and create or select the correct home.
- Add each accessory using its HomeKit or Matter setup code and assign it to a room.
- Rename devices consistently, such as “Kitchen ceiling” or “Front door lock,” so Siri commands and scenes are unambiguous.
- Place frequently used accessories in Favorites and build scenes for grouped actions.
- Add an Apple TV 4K, HomePod or HomePod mini as a home hub when you need remote access or automations that run while you are away.
- Test local control first, then leave the home and test remote control, notifications and automations.
Set up ADT Control as your primary controller
- Confirm that the ADT Command installation is active and that your phone is connected to the account.
- Install the current ADT app supplied for your service and sign in with the authorized account.
- Verify the displayed alarm status, sensor list, cameras, locks and thermostat before relying on notifications.
- Configure status, door and other alerts deliberately; too many alerts can hide a critical event.
- Create scenes or schedules only after individual device commands work reliably.
- Test arm, disarm, a permitted sensor event, camera live view and a climate change while on Wi-Fi and again over cellular data.
- Keep a non-app fallback, such as the physical keypad or other method supplied with the installation, in case the phone, app or network is unavailable.
Troubleshooting common failures
Apple Home accessory is missing
- Confirm that the product is HomeKit or Matter compatible; ordinary Wi-Fi or Bluetooth labeling is not enough.
- Check that the iPhone is using the Apple account associated with the home and that the accessory is powered.
- For Matter, verify iOS 16.1 or later and follow the product’s pairing instructions exactly.
- Move the accessory closer to its required network or border router, then retry pairing.
- If local control works but remote control does not, check the Apple TV or HomePod hub’s power and network connection.
ADT Control shows stale status or cannot connect
- Check the home internet and Wi-Fi first; ADT identifies connectivity as necessary for remote control, notifications and video functions.
- Confirm that the ADT account and monitoring plan are active and that the device is still associated with the installation.
- Try local operation at the ADT keypad or device. If local control fails too, the issue is likely equipment or site connectivity rather than the phone app alone.
- Update the app and phone operating system, then sign in again.
- Contact ADT when a camera, lock or thermostat is not listed, because compatibility and service entitlements are installation-specific.
A device works in one app but not the other
That is usually an integration boundary, not a malfunction. Check the exact model’s supported standards and integrations. Keep the app that owns the device’s critical function as the authoritative one, and use the second app only for controls it explicitly supports.
Decision guide: which app should you use?
Choose Apple Home when
- Most household members use Apple devices and Siri.
- You are mixing brands and want HomeKit or Matter to provide one control surface.
- Your priorities are scenes, automations, room organization and compatible camera viewing.
- You do not need ADT alarm arming, ADT sensor workflows or a professional monitoring relationship.
Choose ADT Control when
- Your home already has an ADT Command installation.
- Alarm status, arm/disarm controls and ADT sensor alerts are the main reason for the app.
- You want ADT cameras, locks, lighting and climate controls connected to the same service account.
- Your plan and equipment support the video, monitoring and automation features you need.
Run both when
- ADT handles the security system while Apple Home handles additional Matter or HomeKit accessories.
- You want Siri and Apple scenes for compatible devices but still need ADT Control for alarm and service functions.
- You have verified exactly which devices and status updates can be shared between ecosystems.
Bottom line
Apple Home is the stronger general-purpose controller for an Apple-centered, multi-brand smart home. ADT Control is the correct primary app for an ADT customer who needs alarm management, ADT alerts, cameras, locks, climate controls and service integration. Choose based on the job you need completed, not on the number of devices an app can display: Apple Home does not replace ADT monitoring, and ADT Control does not automatically manage every HomeKit or Matter accessory.
