Apple Home works with both native HomeKit accessories and Matter devices. Matter support arrived in iOS 16.1 and related Apple platform updates, and current Apple documentation lists Matter air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, sockets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, plus motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature and humidity sensors. The exact experience still depends on the model, firmware, radio (Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or Thread), bridge and the controls that Apple exposes.
What works with Apple Home?
There are two main compatibility paths:
- HomeKit accessories: devices that use Apple’s HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP) and carry HomeKit or Works with Apple Home support.
- Matter accessories: devices using the cross-platform Matter standard over Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Apple Home can add them through the Home app or another HomeKit-based app.
Apple says Matter accessories added to its Home ecosystem can be controlled in the Home app, with Siri, in Control Center and through third-party HomeKit apps. A device being Matter-compatible does not guarantee that every function from the manufacturer’s app will appear in Apple Home; exposed controls vary by device type and implementation.

Matter accessory categories Apple Home supports
Apple’s current Home support documentation lists these Matter types:
| Matter category | Typical Apple Home use |
|---|---|
| Air conditioners | Basic climate control exposed by the device |
| Bridges | Connect compatible accessory families or radios to Matter |
| Lights | On/off, dimming and, when implemented, color or other lighting controls |
| Locks | Lock and unlock functions; supported models may add Apple Home Keys |
| Sockets (smart plugs) | Switching power and, on some models, energy information |
| Switches | Control of connected circuits or scenes |
| Thermostats | Heating and cooling settings provided by the Matter device |
| Blinds and shades | Open, close and position control where supported |
| Motion sensors | Motion events for automations and notifications |
| Ambient-light sensors | Light-level data for automations |
| Contact sensors | Door, window or other open/closed status |
| Temperature sensors | Temperature readings and automation triggers |
| Humidity sensors | Humidity readings and automation triggers |
Apple’s wider Home documentation also groups accessories into areas such as Lights, Climate, Security, Speakers & TVs and Water. Those groupings are broader than the current Matter list: a product may work in Apple Home through native HomeKit support, a Matter bridge or another integration even when its exact Matter device type is not listed.

Examples of compatible devices
Apple’s catalog illustrates the kinds of products a buyer can use, but inventory and firmware can change. Examples include:
- Matter smart plugs: Eve Energy (Matter) provides switching and a power meter.
- Matter smart bulbs and light strips: Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 bulbs and Matter light strips.
- Matter smart locks: Level Lock Pro (Matter), including Apple Home Keys support where configured and available.
- Hubs and bridges: Aqara hubs can connect supported accessories; a bridge’s compatibility depends on the bridge and the devices behind it.
- Thermostats: ecobee models listed for Apple Home expose the functions supported by each model and firmware.
- Lighting systems: Philips Hue products can appear through their compatible bridge and integration.
- Cameras: Logitech Circle View cameras are examples of Home-compatible security products, although camera support and recording features are separate from Matter’s currently listed categories.
Use the exact model number, not just the product family name, when checking compatibility. Two products with similar names can use different radios, bridges or software.

Do you need a HomePod or Apple TV?
For the traditional setup, yes. Apple’s support guidance says you must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Home app. A home hub is also the practical requirement for reliable remote access, automations, notifications and shared-home operation.
There is now a local-control exception. An iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub. An iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or later can also control Thread accessories without a home hub. Apple still recommends a home hub for the best experience, especially if more than one person uses the home or you need access while away.

Thread-specific hardware
Thread Matter accessories need a Thread-capable controller in the home when they are used with a hub-based setup. Apple identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi‑Fi + Ethernet as examples of Thread-enabled home hubs. A supported third-party Thread border router may also provide the Thread network. A Wi‑Fi-only Apple TV or an older hub that lacks Thread cannot substitute for a Thread-capable controller.
What a hub adds
- Remote control when your iPhone is away from home
- Automations that run without your phone being present
- Notifications triggered by sensors, locks and other accessories
- Shared-home access for household members
- More dependable Thread and Matter operation through a resident controller
How to add a Matter device to Apple Home
- Confirm the requirements. Check that the product is a Matter device supported by Apple Home, update its firmware, and verify whether it uses Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, Thread or a bridge. For a hub-based setup, install a compatible home hub first.
- Open the Home app. Tap the add-accessory control, then choose the option to add an accessory. Apple also allows pairing from a HomeKit-based third-party app.
- Scan or enter the Matter code. The Home app may ask you to scan the product’s QR code or enter its 11- or 21-digit Matter setup code. Use the code supplied with the device or generated by its manufacturer.
- Complete the network handoff. Follow the prompts to connect the accessory over Wi‑Fi or Thread. If the device is a bridge, finish its separate bridge setup and then add the devices it exposes.
- Assign and name it. Select a room and give the accessory a distinct name. Names such as “Hall plug” or “Nursery temperature” are easier for Siri and automations than duplicate generic names.
- Test locally, then remotely. Operate the accessory in the Home app while on the home network. If you need away-from-home control, verify that a home hub is active and that automations and notifications run as expected.
Pairing credentials are synchronized through iCloud Keychain. That helps your Apple devices recognize the accessory, but it does not remove the need for the correct Matter code, network and firmware.
Can a Matter device already paired elsewhere be added to Apple Home?
Generally, yes. Matter is designed for multi-admin operation, so a device commissioned in another Matter ecosystem can usually be shared with Apple Home through the manufacturer’s pairing-code or multi-admin flow. The exact menu name differs by manufacturer. Look for options such as “add to another ecosystem,” “share with another controller” or a second Matter QR/setup code.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Leave the device commissioned in its original ecosystem unless the manufacturer specifically tells you to reset it.
- Open the original ecosystem or the manufacturer app and start its multi-admin or sharing process.
- Generate or display the additional Matter setup code.
- In Apple Home, choose Add Accessory and scan or enter that code.
- Assign the new Apple Home copy to a room and test control in both ecosystems.
Resetting a device unnecessarily can erase scenes, calibration or other settings. If a manufacturer does not offer multi-admin sharing, a factory reset and new commission may be required, and that process is device-specific.
HomeKit, Matter over Wi‑Fi and Matter over Thread: what changes?
| Connection path | What it means | Key checks |
|---|---|---|
| HomeKit/HAP | Native Apple Home protocol; often exposes mature vendor-specific Home controls | HomeKit or Works with Apple Home label, exact model and required hub |
| Matter over Wi‑Fi | Cross-platform Matter device using the home Wi‑Fi network | Wi‑Fi band and security requirements, firmware and Matter device type |
| Matter over Ethernet | Matter device connected by wired network, common for some hubs or bridges | Network reachability and bridge setup |
| Matter over Thread | Low-power mesh connection requiring Thread infrastructure in a hub-based Apple setup | Thread-enabled hub or border router and adequate Thread coverage |
| Bridge integration | A bridge presents compatible products to Apple Home, sometimes using another radio behind the scenes | Bridge model, supported accessory list and which functions the bridge exposes |
Protocol compatibility is only the first check. A Matter lock, for example, may expose lock status and commands while omitting a manufacturer’s temporary-code management. A lighting product may expose on/off and dimming but not every scene, effect or adaptive feature.

What features will appear in Apple Home?
Apple states that controls depend on the accessory type. Some lights provide brightness and color controls; a smart TV may provide input selection; a thermostat may provide temperature modes; and a sensor may provide readings or occupancy events. The manufacturer’s app can still offer settings that are not part of the Apple Home model.

Before buying, verify these five details for the exact model:
- Device type: Is it represented by a Matter type Apple Home supports?
- Firmware: Does the vendor require a particular firmware version for Matter or Apple Home?
- Radio and topology: Is the product Wi‑Fi, Thread, Ethernet or dependent on a bridge?
- Apple controls: Are color, energy data, camera recording, lock credentials, adaptive lighting or other desired functions explicitly listed?
- Lifecycle: Will the vendor continue firmware updates, and are current iOS, tvOS or HomePod versions required?
Packaging that says Works with Apple Home should state supported iPhone or iPad software and any home-hub requirements. Treat that label as a starting point, then confirm the model’s documentation.
Troubleshooting compatibility problems
The accessory is not discovered
- Update the iPhone, Home hub and accessory firmware.
- Confirm that the Matter QR code or numeric code belongs to this device and has not already been consumed.
- For Thread products, verify a Thread-enabled hub or border router and move the accessory closer during commissioning.
- For bridged products, add the bridge first and check whether the accessory is on its supported list.
Pairing succeeds but remote control fails
Local iPhone control does not provide the same service as a resident home hub. Check that a compatible HomePod or Apple TV is configured as a home hub, is online and has current software. Then test an automation or notification while the iPhone is away from the home network.

Only basic controls are visible
This is usually a feature-exposure limitation rather than a pairing failure. Compare the Apple Home controls with the accessory’s documented Matter device type and firmware. Advanced vendor features may remain available only in the manufacturer app or through a bridge-specific integration.
The device works in another ecosystem but not Apple Home
Use the other ecosystem’s multi-admin or sharing function to create a second Matter commission. If no sharing option exists, consult the manufacturer’s reset and re-pair instructions before removing the device.
A practical buying checklist
- Look for a current HomeKit, Works with Apple Home or Matter designation for the exact model.
- Choose a hub if you need remote access, automations, notifications or shared control.
- For Thread, include a Thread-enabled HomePod mini, compatible Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) or supported border router in the plan.
- Check whether the product is a Matter device itself or requires a bridge.
- Confirm the Apple Home controls you actually need instead of assuming feature parity with the vendor app.
- Check current firmware and minimum iOS, iPadOS, tvOS or HomePod software requirements.
- Keep the Matter setup code in a secure place; it may be needed for recovery or multi-admin pairing.
Bottom line for Apple Home users
Apple Home is compatible with a substantial range of native HomeKit products and with Matter accessories in the currently supported categories. iOS 18 makes hub-free local Matter pairing possible on supported iPhones, but a home hub remains the sensible choice for a complete home: remote access, automations, notifications, shared users and dependable Thread operation. Check the exact model, firmware, radio and exposed controls before purchase, because the Matter logo alone does not promise every manufacturer feature inside Apple Home.
