Apple Home camera activity notifications tell you that a configured event was detected. With HomeKit Secure Video, the rule can be narrowed by time, whether someone is home, whether a clip was recorded, and whether the motion appears to involve a person, animal, vehicle, or package. Apple Intelligence adds two different tools: Reduced Notifications groups related alerts, while Summarise Videos creates searchable descriptions of recorded clips. One is an event signal, one reduces alert volume, and one explains recorded footage after analysis.
At a glance: three features, three different jobs
| Feature | What you receive | When it helps | What it does not claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activity Notifications | An alert that a camera detected motion or another event under your rules | Immediate awareness that something happened | It is not a prose interpretation of the complete clip |
| Reduced Notifications | One grouped alert representing related Home notifications | Reducing repeated alerts from continuing motion or several related events | It is not a video caption and does not add a new detection category |
| Summarise Videos | A descriptive caption attached to recorded HomeKit Secure Video activity | Understanding and searching what happened in a clip | Apple does not publish an independent numeric accuracy score for it |
These features can work together. A camera can first detect motion and send an ordinary notification, Home can combine several related alerts into one reduced notification, and Apple Intelligence can later attach a natural-language description to the recorded clip. Turning on one does not automatically replace the others.

What an ordinary Apple Home camera notification tells you
Every Apple Home-compatible camera can notify you when motion is detected. The notification is the result of the camera and Home configuration, not a general-purpose statement about everything visible in the scene. It answers a narrow question: Did this camera detect the event covered by my rule?

With HomeKit Secure Video, notification conditions can include:
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
- The time of day, such as only overnight or during working hours.
- Whether people are home or away.
- Whether the camera recorded a clip.
- Any motion, or a selected motion class.
Combining conditions makes the alert more useful. For example, a front-door camera can be configured to notify only when nobody is home and a package or person is detected. A backyard camera can be limited to a schedule and a selected motion type instead of notifying for every moving branch.
Person, animal, vehicle, and package categories
HomeKit Secure Video can distinguish among people, animals, vehicles, and packages when the camera and configuration support those categories. Selecting a specific type produces fewer recordings and fewer clip notifications because movement that does not match the selected class is less likely to trigger the rule. Leaves, shadows, or a squirrel are therefore less likely to create an alert from a person-focused rule, although no detection system should be treated as infallible.
Package detection has a specific condition: the package must remain within the camera’s view after delivery. A brief appearance at the edge of the frame may not satisfy that condition. If the camera cannot maintain a useful view of the drop-off area, changing the rule alone will not solve missed package events.
Face Recognition is an optional extra
Face Recognition can notify you when people tagged in the Photos app appear in the camera view. This is different from the general person category. A person alert says that the system classified movement as a person; Face Recognition attempts to associate that person with a tagged individual. It is optional HomeKit Secure Video functionality and depends on the relevant Photos tags being available.
What the notification does not tell you
An activity alert does not automatically explain the entire sequence in the recording. It may identify the configured event class, but it does not promise a sentence describing who approached, what they carried, or how the scene changed. To inspect those details, open the associated recording or use Summarise Videos when the feature is available.
Reduced Notifications: fewer interruptions, not deeper analysis
Apple describes Reduced Notifications as providing “a single alert summary instead of multiple alerts.” It is a notification-management feature. If a camera, lock, or another Home accessory generates several related alerts, Home can group them so the phone does not buzz for every individual event.
Grouping changes presentation and timing, not the underlying camera detection. A reduced alert should be read as a compact representation of related notifications. It does not turn a motion event into a caption, verify the identity of a person, or add facts that the camera did not detect.

When grouping is useful
- A driveway camera sees repeated movement while someone unloads a car.
- A door sensor and camera generate several related alerts during one arrival.
- A busy area creates many notifications that are individually valid but collectively distracting.
Use ordinary notifications when each event needs immediate attention. Use Reduced Notifications when repetition is the problem and a grouped signal is sufficient. You can still open Home and review the underlying activity, subject to the recording and retention limits of your setup.
Summarise Videos: captions for recorded clips
Summarise Videos is the Apple Intelligence feature that adds interpretation. Apple says it can automatically generate video descriptions for recorded clips from compatible Home cameras. The description is attached to the recorded HomeKit Secure Video activity and can be searched with natural-language queries.
Its timing is different
Activity Notifications are designed for immediate awareness when detection occurs. Summarise Videos works on a recorded clip, so its useful output comes after relevant footage exists and has been analyzed. It is therefore better for answering “What happened in that recording?” than for replacing a real-time alert.
What a generated description is for
A caption can help you understand a clip without watching every second and can make a large history easier to search. Natural-language searches can target descriptions of activity, such as a person, pet, or package, rather than relying only on a timestamp or a notification title. The result is a convenience and retrieval layer over recorded activity, not a separate camera feed.
How Apple documents the processing flow
- Home devices detect relevant activity, such as a person, pet, or package.
- The footage may be sent to Private Cloud Compute for additional analysis.
- Private Cloud Compute generates a caption and returns it to the home devices.
- Apple says the data sent for this documented camera flow is permanently deleted after caption generation.
The wording “may be sent” matters: Apple describes simple Home requests as using on-device processing and complex requests as potentially using Private Cloud Compute. Cameras that do not use Summarise Videos analyze content only on the device.
Activity notifications versus AI summaries
| Comparison point | Activity Notifications | Reduced Notifications | Summarise Videos |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information type | Configured event detection | Grouped representation of related alerts | Descriptive caption for recorded activity |
| Typical timing | When motion or the selected event is detected | When related alerts can be combined | After a compatible clip is recorded and analyzed |
| Noise control | Time, occupancy, clip, and motion-type rules | Combines repeated or related Home alerts | Searches descriptions instead of requiring manual review of every clip |
| Searchability | Usually filtered by event and history controls | Represents a group of notifications | Natural-language search of generated descriptions |
| Core requirement | Apple Home-compatible camera; HomeKit Secure Video for the richer rule set | Apple Intelligence support in the Home app | Compatible Home camera, supported home hub, Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone workflow, and eligible iCloud+ plan |
| Privacy processing | Camera and Home processing under HomeKit security protections | Notification grouping | On-device work where applicable, with a documented Private Cloud Compute path for complex caption generation |
Apple’s support material does not provide an independent numeric accuracy comparison between ordinary detection and generated captions. Treat both as assistance for awareness and review, not as a guarantee that every event is classified correctly.
Requirements for AI camera summaries
For the documented iPhone workflow, Apple lists stricter requirements than it does for a basic motion notification.

| Requirement | What Apple specifies |
|---|---|
| Home hub | Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), or HomePod mini with current software |
| Phone | An iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence |
| Home setting | Apple Intelligence enabled in the Home app |
| Subscription | A 2 TB iCloud+ subscription for the documented iPhone workflow |
| Availability | Device, language, and region availability can vary; usage limits may apply |
A compatible camera alone is not enough for Summarise Videos. If the Apple Intelligence option is missing, check the phone model, software versions, Home hub status, language and region, and iCloud+ tier before troubleshooting the camera.

How to configure the features
Names and locations can vary slightly by software release, but the setup follows this sequence.
1. Add the camera and establish a home hub
- Add the Apple Home-compatible camera to the Home app and assign it to the correct room.
- For recording history and the richer notification conditions, configure HomeKit Secure Video with a supported home hub.
- Make sure the Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), or HomePod mini that will act as the hub is signed in to the same home and running current software.
2. Choose what counts as an activity notification
- Open the camera in the Home app and open its settings.
- Open the activity or notification controls.
- Select the schedule, home/away condition, and whether a clip must be recorded.
- Choose any motion or a specific class such as person, animal, vehicle, or package.
- Save the rule, then test it under the conditions you selected. A rule limited to “when away” will not behave like an all-day rule while someone is home.
3. Turn on Reduced Notifications when alert volume is the issue
- Open the Home app settings for Apple Intelligence and notification behavior.
- Enable Reduced Notifications if the option is available for your device and region.
- Leave the camera’s detection rules in place; grouping is an additional presentation choice, not a replacement for those rules.
4. Enable Summarise Videos
- Confirm that Apple Intelligence is enabled for the Home app.
- Confirm that the home hub has current software and that the home has the required iCloud+ tier.
- Enable Summarise Videos in the Home app’s Apple Intelligence settings when the control appears.
- Allow compatible cameras to record activity, because there is nothing to summarize without a stored clip.
5. Search and verify a caption
- Open the camera’s recorded activity history.
- Use a natural-language search describing the event you want to find.
- Open the matching clip and compare the caption with the actual footage before relying on it for an important decision.
HomeKit Secure Video storage and retention
HomeKit Secure Video retains the last 10 days of activity. The iCloud+ camera allowance is separate from ordinary iCloud storage consumption: Apple says video content does not count against the storage quota, although the plan still determines how many cameras can use the feature.
| iCloud+ plan | HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance |
|---|---|
| 50 GB | One camera |
| 200 GB | Up to five cameras |
| 2 TB | Unlimited cameras |
| 6 TB | Unlimited cameras |
| 12 TB | Unlimited cameras |
The 2 TB requirement listed for the documented iPhone Apple Intelligence camera workflow should not be confused with the number of days retained. A larger plan allows more cameras, while the stated activity history remains the last 10 days.

Apple says HomeKit Secure Video recordings are end-to-end encrypted. That protection applies to the recorded Home camera feature, while the analysis path depends on whether Summarise Videos is being used.

When Summarise Videos is not used
Cameras that do not use Summarise Videos analyze content only on-device, according to Apple’s documentation. This keeps the video-analysis step local to the relevant camera or home equipment.
When a caption is generated
Apple’s documented flow allows footage to be sent to Private Cloud Compute for complex analysis. Apple says data sent to Private Cloud Compute is not stored or accessible to Apple and is permanently deleted after caption generation in this camera-caption flow. The description is then returned to the home devices.

These statements describe Apple’s architecture and handling commitments; they do not mean every camera, language, region, or software release has identical availability. Check the settings shown on your devices before assuming that a particular camera can produce captions.
Do not confuse camera history with the Home Activity log
The Home app has an accessory Activity view for devices such as locks and alarm systems. Apple says that view can show up to 30 days of accessory activity, but “Activity doesn’t include recorded camera activity.” Camera recordings and their captions belong in the camera’s recorded activity history, not in the general accessory log.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis distinction explains a common troubleshooting mistake: finding a lock event in the Activity log does not prove that a camera clip exists, and failing to see a camera recording there does not mean the camera failed to record.
Which feature should you use?
Choose ordinary Activity Notifications when you need speed
Use them for situations where the first alert matters more than an explanation: a person at an entrance, a vehicle in a driveway, or motion detected while everyone is away. Tighten the rule with a schedule, occupancy state, clip requirement, or motion class to reduce irrelevant alerts.
Choose Reduced Notifications when repetition is the problem
Use grouping when alerts are individually expected but arrive too often. It is appropriate for a busy entryway or a continuing movement event where one grouped notice is enough. Keep ordinary alerts for events that must be acted on separately.
Choose Summarise Videos when review and search matter
Use captions when you need to scan recorded history, locate a particular kind of event with natural language, or understand a clip without watching every frame. It requires the most infrastructure and does not replace an immediate detection alert.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No camera notification arrives
- Check that the camera is online and belongs to the intended Home.
- Review the schedule and home/away condition; a correct rule can intentionally suppress an alert at the current time.
- Check whether the rule requires a recorded clip or a specific motion category.
- Verify that notifications are enabled for the Home app on the iPhone.
Too many irrelevant alerts
- Replace “any motion” with the relevant class, such as person or vehicle.
- Add a time-of-day or occupancy condition.
- Enable Reduced Notifications if repeated related alerts, rather than incorrect detection, are the main problem.
- Recheck camera framing so foliage, reflections, or a busy road are not dominating the detection area.
No AI summary option appears
- Confirm that the iPhone supports Apple Intelligence and that Apple Intelligence is enabled in Home.
- Check for a current-software Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), or HomePod mini acting as the home hub.
- Verify the 2 TB iCloud+ requirement for the documented iPhone workflow.
- Check language and region availability and allow for possible usage limits.
A clip exists but has no caption
- Confirm that Summarise Videos is enabled and that the camera is compatible.
- Wait for processing after the recording is created; a notification can arrive before a description is available.
- Check whether the clip is still within the 10-day HomeKit Secure Video activity window.
- Open the clip itself rather than the general accessory Activity log.
A package or person is missed
- For package detection, ensure the package remains visible after delivery.
- For person detection, check that the selected motion class is not being confused with a broader or narrower rule.
- Improve the camera’s view of the relevant area and test under the same lighting and occupancy conditions used by the rule.
- Do not treat a generated caption or a detection label as proof that every event will be classified correctly.
Bottom line for everyday use
Think of the features as a pipeline. Activity Notifications report that a configured event occurred. Reduced Notifications compress several related reports into one alert. Summarise Videos describes recorded footage and makes those descriptions searchable. Start with precise detection rules, add grouping only if alert volume is distracting, and add AI summaries when you need to understand or find clips later. The AI layer has stricter device, hub, subscription, language, and region requirements, while Apple documents end-to-end encryption for HomeKit Secure Video and a Private Cloud Compute process that deletes data after caption generation.
