Apple Family Sharing brings eligible subscriptions and family location sharing together in one group, without requiring everyone to use the same Apple Account. An adult organizer can invite up to five other people; members decide whether to share their location, and only eligible subscriptions or purchases can be shared.
What Apple Family Sharing does—and what it does not
Family Sharing is the group setup. Each person joins with their own Apple Account, while the organizer manages invitations and family settings. Within the group, eligible subscriptions and purchases can be shared, and members can use Find My to share locations or help locate a missing device. These are related capabilities, not one all-or-nothing setting. Apple Support’s guide to how Family Sharing works explains the group and its features.

The organizer can include up to five additional family members. Sharing is limited to eligible subscriptions and purchases; joining a family group does not make every app, service, or item of content available to everyone.

- Open Settings, tap Family, then tap Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription you want to manage and enable Share with Family if that control is available. Some services require a separate sharing step.
- Check the subscription’s eligibility and your family’s payment settings before enabling Purchase Sharing. If an App Store subscription does not offer a “Share with Family” option, Apple says it is not eligible for family sharing.
Apple’s iPhone subscription-sharing guide covers these controls. Its instructions correspond to iOS 27; menu wording and availability can vary by software version, service, and country or region.

Understand who may be charged
When Purchase Sharing is on, shared subscription charges may go to the organizer’s default payment method. Apple describes an exception when the member making a purchase has a valid payment method. Review the actual family and payment settings before switching Purchase Sharing on; do not assume a subscription is billed only to the person who originally signed up.
Check what the family needs to access
Eligibility is only one part of the decision. Check whether the particular service shares automatically or needs sharing enabled, whether its content or features are available in each member’s region, and whether the family wants shared storage or a subscription bundle. Apple One is a bundling option, but plan-by-plan eligibility, prices, and regional availability should be checked in Apple’s current offer and settings rather than assumed.

How to share your location with family
- On iPhone, open Settings and tap Family.
- Tap Location Sharing and choose the family members with whom to share your location.
- Make sure Location Services is on. A participating member can stop sharing their location later.
Apple says the organizer’s location is automatically shared when location sharing is configured; other members can choose whether to share theirs. Children and teens with Screen Time enabled may not be able to change their own location-sharing settings. Location sharing shows the location of people who have chosen to share it. Finding a family member’s missing device is a related Find My feature, not the same thing as continuously sharing that person’s location. Apple describes Family Sharing location sharing as using Find My to share a location automatically with family, but members retain control over whether to share and can stop sharing.

What iCloud+ sharing means for privacy
With iCloud+, family members can draw on shared storage capacity while continuing to use their own accounts. Sharing capacity does not give the family access to one another’s private photos or documents. Apple’s iPhone User Guide puts it this way: “For storage, you only share the space—your photos and documents stay private and everyone keeps using their own accounts.”
Apple lists shared iCloud+ storage options of 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB. Which options and features are available can depend on region. See Apple’s iCloud+ family-sharing guide for current details; these capacities describe storage, not a promise that every plan or feature is available everywhere.

When a family member cannot see shared apps or content
- Confirm the app, subscription, or purchase is eligible for sharing; not every item can be shared.
- Check whether the service needs its own sharing control enabled in Settings > Family > Subscriptions.
- Check regional availability: Apple notes that shareable content and some features vary by country or region.
- Review Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, If you can’t find your family’s shared apps and content.
Do you need an AirTag?
No. Family Sharing and Find My location sharing do not require an AirTag. An AirTag is an optional item finder for belongings such as keys or a backpack; it is not a way to track family members. Use Family Sharing’s location controls when people choose to share their location, and Find My’s device-finding features for a missing device.
