The M3 Ultra is also a separate two-die design, so it is not simply an older name for an M4 Max with more cores.
Apple’s explanation is simpler than the rumors
The 2025 Mac Studio does not have an M4 Ultra because Apple says that not every generation of its M-series chips will include an Ultra-tier model. Apple updated the desktop with an M4 Max and an M3 Ultra, but it did not announce an M4 Ultra.

That is the complete explanation Apple has publicly provided. The company has not said that an M4 Ultra was blocked by manufacturing yields, heat, packaging problems, cost, weak demand, or a delay. Those are possible industry theories, but they should not be presented as established facts.
The M4 Max and M3 Ultra are not simply two versions of the same design
The generational mismatch looks strange if “Ultra” is treated as a faster version of the newest Max chip. Apple’s naming and architecture are more complicated than that.

- Design: The monitor stand for the desk has a large 14.6 x 9.3 inches metal shelf that fits most flat screen displays, laptops, and printers, with a maximum support weight of up to 44 lbs (20kg). Rubber pads prevent slipping or damage to your work surface
- Ergonomic: The height-adjustable monitor riser can raise a computer monitor, notebook, or any device by 3.9 inches, 4.7 inches, or 5.5 inches off the desk to create a comfortable viewing and sitting position which helps reduce stress on the neck and back
- Ventilated: The computer stand has a large sturdy platform with vented holes, this stand will prevent overheating and keep the device running cool
- Under-stand Storage: Open space beneath the stand for storing keyboards, notebooks and other desk accessories to reduce desktop clutter
- Wide Compatibility: Works for single or dual monitor arrangements and laptop setups for home and office desks
The M3 Ultra is a distinct multi-die design. Apple created it by connecting two M3 Max dies through its UltraFusion packaging architecture. Apple says UltraFusion links the dies across more than 10,000 signals and provides more than 2.5TB/s of low-latency interprocessor bandwidth. The operating system and applications see the combined package as a single chip.
That means an Ultra product requires more than taking the current Max chip and adding a label. It involves a suitable multi-die design, the packaging and interconnect technology to join the dies, validation, software behavior, power and cooling decisions, and a product strategy that makes sense for the Mac Studio. The existence of those requirements is a technical inference from Apple’s description of UltraFusion—not a specific reason Apple has confirmed for skipping an M4 Ultra.
What the two Mac Studio options actually offer
The practical comparison is not simply “newer M4 versus older M3.” The M4 Max and M3 Ultra target different extremes of performance.

| Specification | M4 Max | M3 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum CPU cores | 16 | 32 |
| Maximum GPU cores | 40 | 80 |
| Neural Engine | 16-core | 32-core |
| Memory bandwidth | Up to 546GB/s | Up to 819GB/s |
| Maximum unified memory | 128GB | 512GB |
| Maximum SSD capacity | Not the same headline capacity as the Ultra configuration | Up to 16TB |
The exact configuration matters: “M4 Max” and “M3 Ultra” each describe a family of options, not one identical specification. Apple positions the M4 Max for demanding professional work, while the M3 Ultra is aimed at heavily threaded and bandwidth-intensive applications.
Why an older M3 Ultra can be the more capable choice
For many buyers, the M4 Max is the sensible option because it belongs to the newer generation and provides substantial performance for professional desktop work. But generation number alone does not determine which Mac Studio is faster for a particular job.
The M3 Ultra has up to twice as many CPU and GPU cores as the maximum M4 Max configuration, 50% more listed memory bandwidth, and four times the maximum unified-memory capacity. Those differences matter when software can use a large number of cores or when the project cannot comfortably fit within 128GB of memory.

- Large local AI models: the M3 Ultra’s up-to-512GB unified-memory configuration can make it suitable for running language models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely in memory, subject to the model, quantization, software, and actual memory requirements.
- Heavy 3D and rendering work: workloads that scale well across CPU and GPU resources can benefit from the Ultra’s larger core counts.
- Large datasets: data-heavy development, simulation, and analysis workflows may benefit from both additional memory capacity and higher bandwidth.
- Complex media production: demanding video, effects, and other concurrent professional workloads can benefit from having more memory available to the system and applications.
Apple has claimed that the M3 Ultra can approach twice the performance of the M4 Max in workloads that use its higher CPU and GPU counts and larger unified-memory capacity. That is an Apple performance claim, not a result of independent testing, and it will not apply equally to every application.
Which Mac Studio should you buy?
Choose the M4 Max when you want newer-generation performance without an extreme memory requirement
The M4 Max is the better fit for coding, photography, music production, mainstream professional video editing, and demanding creative work that fits comfortably within its memory ceiling. It is also the more straightforward choice for buyers who value the newer M-series generation but do not have a workload that specifically requires Ultra-class memory capacity or core counts.
In the available product listings referenced for this comparison, the M4 Max Mac Studio started at $2,499. Pricing, stock, and exact configurations can change, so verify the current listing before buying. If this is the configuration you need, compare the available Mac Studio with M4 Max options rather than waiting for an unannounced M4 Ultra.
Choose the M3 Ultra when memory capacity and parallel workloads are the priority
The M3 Ultra makes more sense for local AI experimentation with very large models, high-end rendering, massive datasets, unusually complex media workloads, or professional applications that scale effectively across many CPU and GPU cores.
Its higher purchase price is difficult to justify if the applications you use cannot exploit those resources. But for a workload constrained by memory rather than by ordinary single-threaded speed, the M3 Ultra may solve a problem that a newer M4 Max cannot solve simply by being one generation newer.

What Apple has—and has not—left open
Apple’s statement does not mean that an M4 Ultra was impossible, canceled, or permanently ruled out. It means only that Apple did not make one for the 2025 Mac Studio update and does not promise an Ultra part in every M-series generation.
The statement also does not confirm what Apple will do in a future Mac Studio. No future Ultra chip should be treated as confirmed unless Apple announces it.

A high-end Mac Studio may be paired with fast external project storage, specialized expansion hardware, or several displays. The accessory must support the required Thunderbolt standard and workload; a generic USB-C cable is not automatically an equivalent substitute for a Thunderbolt 5 cable.
For media projects and large working files, a Thunderbolt 5 external SSD can provide a practical high-speed storage expansion path. A Thunderbolt 5 dock for Mac Studio can consolidate peripherals, networking, displays, and storage, but check the dock’s display support, power behavior, port allocation, and compatibility with the exact Mac Studio configuration.
A display is a separate decision rather than part of the explanation for Apple’s chip lineup. Buyers building a complete workstation can also consider an Apple Studio Display, while comparing its resolution, size, refresh rate, connectivity, and price with other displays that meet the same workflow requirements.
