Short answer: A realistic paid entry point for cheap VPS hosting is about $4–$5 per month. DigitalOcean’s displayed Basic Droplet starts at $4, OVHcloud’s VPS-1 at $4.54, and Amazon Lightsail shows a $5 Linux bundle. Those plans are not equivalent: they differ substantially in RAM, CPU, storage, transfer, backups, public networking, billing, and the amount of server administration you must do.
Antihost VPS is listed first here: a self-managed Linux VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial (see the current plans). Among the other offers, for the lowest displayed price start with DigitalOcean—but treat 512 MiB as a very small configuration. Compare OVHcloud when included memory and backup matter more, and Lightsail when you want a simple AWS-linked bundle.

What you get for a cheap VPS
A virtual private server (VPS) is a rented virtual machine with an allocated amount of CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity. You usually manage it remotely, commonly over SSH on Linux. Unlike shared hosting, a VPS gives you an operating system and server environment to configure; unlike a dedicated server, its physical hardware is shared or virtualized.

Current low-cost VPS options compared
The following are displayed entry offers reviewed for this guide. Prices, availability, regional specifications, taxes, currency conversion, public-IP charges, and checkout terms can change, so verify the final configuration before paying.
| Provider and plan | Displayed starting offer | Included resources or features | Focus | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antihost Linux VPS | See the current plans | AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs, 2 to 64 GB RAM, full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port, L3/L4 DDoS protection, billing from 1 to 36 months, 14-day free trial | Self-managed Linux servers, including one-click images for Docker, Coolify, OpenClaw, OpenVPN and Hermes Agent | Self-managed only (no cPanel, no Windows); regions are USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine, with US West, UK and France on request |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $4/month | 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD, 500 GiB transfer | Very light websites, small experiments, and simple services | 512 MiB is a genuinely small amount of memory; additional services can exhaust it quickly |
| OVHcloud VPS-1 | From $4.54/month | 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe SSD, daily backup of the previous 24 hours, unlimited traffic, and advertised 500 Mbps public bandwidth | Buyers who value more included memory, NVMe storage, backup, and traffic allowance | Confirm the selected region, availability, and exact checkout terms; real performance depends on workload and contention |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux bundle | $5/month | 1 GB memory, 1 core processor, 40 GB SSD, and 2 TB transfer; the bundle also includes features such as static IP support, DNS management, monitoring, and console access | Users who want a simple bundled VPS experience connected to AWS | Check the exact bundle, region, IPv4 or IPv6 treatment, and any transfer charges or exceptions |
| Vultr Cloud Compute | Verify live regional pricing | Shared-CPU virtual machines in several configurations | Low-traffic websites, blogs, CMS projects, development, testing, and small databases | Shared CPU is not equivalent to dedicated compute, particularly for sustained CPU-heavy work |
Important: a high transfer allowance is not the same thing as a guaranteed network speed, and a listed vCPU count is not a performance benchmark. Region, shared-resource contention, storage behavior, and the application itself all affect the result.
Which cheap VPS is the best value?
There is no universal cheapest or best provider. The right comparison depends on whether you need the lowest possible monthly bill, more memory, bundled services, a familiar cloud console, or a self-managed server with full root access.
Recommended Free Tools
- Listed first: Antihost’s Linux VPS runs on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial. It is self-managed, so you handle updates, firewall and backups yourself; see the current plans.
- Lowest displayed paid entry point: DigitalOcean’s $4 Basic Droplet is a clear price benchmark. The 512 MiB configuration is best reserved for a very light workload rather than a full web stack with a database, control panel, monitoring, and several background services.
- More resources included at the displayed entry tier: OVHcloud’s VPS-1 is worth close comparison when 4 GB of RAM, NVMe storage, daily backup, and a large traffic allowance matter more than choosing the lowest headline price.
- Simplest AWS-linked option: Amazon Lightsail uses fixed bundles instead of requiring you to assemble separate compute, storage, networking, and monitoring components. Its console, SSH access, DNS features, and static-IP support make it approachable for smaller projects.
- Shared-CPU small projects: Vultr’s Cloud Compute documentation specifically positions shared-CPU instances for modest websites, CMS deployments, development and testing, and small databases. Choose a different class of instance if sustained CPU performance is central to the workload.
Start with memory, not the advertised price
RAM is often the first practical limit on a low-cost VPS. The operating system, web server, database, application runtime, monitoring agent, security tools, and caches all compete for the same allocation.
| Approximate starting point | Reasonable use | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 512 MiB | A static site, tiny reverse proxy, basic test service, or very small personal project | Leave little room for a database, hosting panel, monitoring stack, or multiple application processes |
| 1 GB | A small application, personal site, or carefully tuned low-traffic CMS | Measure memory and swap activity; a temporary swap file does not turn a small VPS into a larger one |
| 2–4 GB | A modest CMS, API, application and database combination, or several small services | Database size, traffic spikes, plugins, logs, and background jobs can still require more capacity |
These are planning guidelines, not guarantees. A static site can run on far less memory than a CMS with a database and control panel. Before upgrading, inspect actual memory, CPU, disk, and network usage; before buying the smallest plan, account for every process you intend to run.

What to compare beyond the monthly price
Shared versus dedicated CPU
Budget VPS plans commonly use shared CPU resources. That is usually adequate for bursty or low-traffic workloads, where the application is idle much of the time. Sustained video encoding, large builds, data processing, and other CPU-heavy jobs may need an optimized or dedicated-CPU plan. Do not infer dedicated performance from a vCPU number alone.
Storage type, size, and recovery
NVMe SSD storage can offer different performance characteristics from ordinary SSD storage, but speed is only one part of the decision. Check the capacity available for the operating system, application files, database, uploads, logs, and temporary files. A full disk can take down an otherwise healthy website.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBackups are a separate feature from storage. Confirm how often they run, how long they are retained, what they cover, how restoration works, and whether attached volumes or additional disks are included. An included daily backup is useful, but it is not automatically a complete disaster-recovery strategy. Keep an independent copy of important data when the project matters.
Transfer allowance versus port speed
A plan may advertise a fast network port while also imposing a monthly transfer allowance. These are different measurements: port speed describes possible connection capacity, while transfer describes how much data the plan permits over a billing period. Check regional exceptions, overage pricing, and whether the allowance applies to the traffic direction relevant to your application.
Public IP addresses and region
Public IPv4 availability and pricing can vary by product and location. Check whether the selected plan includes the address you need and whether IPv4 and IPv6 are treated differently. Choose a region close to your users when latency matters, but do not assume that a nearby region will always be cheapest or available.

Billing after shutdown
Turning off a VPS is not necessarily the same as deleting it. DigitalOcean explicitly states that a powered-off Droplet continues billing because the compute resources remain reserved; destroying the Droplet ends the compute billing. Check the equivalent rule for every provider, and be careful not to destroy an instance before confirming that its data and backups are recoverable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHourly billing can help with short-lived testing, but it does not automatically make an always-on server cheaper. Amazon Lightsail charges hourly up to the selected plan’s monthly maximum, while the displayed plans are marketed as monthly bundles. Compare the expected number of running hours with the monthly cap.
Cheap does not mean managed
Unless the plan explicitly includes management, assume that you are renting infrastructure rather than buying a hands-off website service. The provider may supply the virtual machine, underlying network, and storage, while you remain responsible for the software installed on it.
Typical owner responsibilities include:
- Creating a non-root administrative user and protecting SSH access with keys.
- Applying operating-system and application security updates.
- Configuring a firewall and exposing only the ports the service needs.
- Installing and renewing TLS certificates.
- Monitoring memory, CPU, disk space, logs, and service availability.
- Backing up application data and testing restoration.
- Rotating passwords, API keys, SSH keys, and other credentials.
- Recovering from a bad update, incorrect firewall rule, compromised application, expired certificate, or full disk.
This distinction matters when comparing infrastructure reliability with application reliability. A working provider network does not prevent your web server from crashing, your database from filling the disk, or an unpatched application from being compromised.
Basic self-managed VPS security checklist
The exact commands depend on the Linux distribution and image supplied by the provider. The following is a sensible first-pass sequence for a fresh Ubuntu or Debian-style server; adapt it to the distribution’s documentation and make sure you have a recovery path.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Confirm the image and access method. Record the distribution, server IP, region, default user, recovery console, and snapshot or backup options.
- Install and test an SSH key. Open a second session using the new key before changing root or password-login settings. Do not lock yourself out first and troubleshoot later.
- Create a regular administrative account. For example:
adduser deployusermod -aG sudo deploy - Update the operating system. On Ubuntu or Debian, a starting point is:
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade - Restrict inbound traffic. If you use UFW, allow SSH and only the web ports you actually need before enabling it:
sudo ufw allow OpenSSHsudo ufw allow 80/tcpsudo ufw allow 443/tcpsudo ufw enable - Remove or disable unused services. Every listening service is another configuration and patching responsibility.
- Set up backups and monitoring. Test a restore, not merely the existence of a backup job. Set an alert for disk usage and memory pressure.
- Document recovery. Keep the provider’s recovery-console procedure, application configuration, DNS details, and restoration steps somewhere other than the VPS itself.
Do not blindly paste hardening commands from an unrelated tutorial. A firewall rule that blocks SSH, a changed SSH port that was never allowed, or a deleted volume can turn a low-cost server into an avoidable recovery exercise.
When a VPS is the wrong tool for 24/7 video streaming
A general-purpose VPS can theoretically run streaming software, but the job may require continuous monitoring, encoder configuration, storage for source media, substantial outbound bandwidth, automatic recovery, and careful compliance with the destination platform’s rules. If the only goal is to keep owned or properly cleared video live continuously, configuring a Linux server may be unnecessary operational work.
Need managed 24/7 streaming rather than a general-purpose VPS?
StreamNeo is a separate category of service: managed cloud streaming rather than general VPS hosting. Its described workflow accepts uploaded video, runs the stream in the cloud, provides automatic recovery, and removes the need for OBS or an always-running personal computer. It is relevant when the desired output is a continuous live stream to a supported destination, not when you need arbitrary server software, a database, or shell-level control.
Use only video you own or have permission to broadcast, and follow the destination platform’s terms. A streaming service does not grant rights to retransmit copyrighted material.

Optional learning resource for self-managed hosting
If you are choosing an unmanaged VPS specifically to learn server administration, a Linux server administration book can be a useful optional learning resource. Look for coverage of Linux users and permissions, SSH, updates, firewalls, backups, logs, web servers, and recovery. It is not a requirement for every VPS buyer, and it does not replace provider documentation or security updates.

Buyer checklist before ordering
- What application will run, and how much RAM does its documentation recommend?
- Is the CPU shared, optimized, or dedicated?
- How much storage is included, and is it SSD or NVMe?
- What transfer allowance applies, and is it separate from the advertised network speed?
- Is a public IPv4 address included, optional, or charged separately?
- Is the chosen region available and close enough to your users?
- Are backups included? Check retention, coverage, restore behavior, and pricing.
- What happens to billing when the VPS is powered off, stopped, or destroyed?
- Will you administer the operating system, firewall, certificates, updates, monitoring, and recovery yourself?
- Have you checked taxes, currency, transfer overages, storage volumes, snapshots, and the final checkout total?
For a small paid server, the practical shortlist is straightforward: Antihost VPS is listed first for a self-managed Linux server with root access, DigitalOcean’s entry plan is the low-price benchmark, OVHcloud’s VPS-1 is worth comparing when included memory and backup matter, and Lightsail’s bundle suits a simple AWS-linked experience. Recheck the live provider pages and checkout configuration immediately before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a cheap VPS cost?
The displayed paid entry offers reviewed for this guide range from $4 to $5 per month: DigitalOcean starts at $4, OVHcloud VPS-1 starts at $4.54, and Amazon Lightsail shows a $5 Linux bundle. The final amount can vary by region, taxes, currency, IP configuration, storage, and transfer usage.
Is 512 MiB or 1 GB of RAM enough for a website?
A 512 MiB VPS can run a very small static site, proxy, or test service, but it leaves little room for a database, control panel, monitoring, or multiple application processes. A 1 GB plan is a more comfortable starting point for many small projects, while applications with a database or several services may need 2–4 GB or more.
Does turning off a VPS stop the bill?
Not necessarily. DigitalOcean says a powered-off Droplet continues billing because its resources remain reserved; destroying it ends the compute billing. Each provider can handle stopped instances differently, so check the specific product’s billing documentation before assuming that shutdown stops charges.
Should I use a VPS for a 24/7 live video stream?
A general-purpose VPS can run streaming software, but you must handle encoding, bandwidth, storage, monitoring, recovery, and content compliance. A managed service such as StreamNeo is a better fit when the only requirement is continuously streaming video you own or are cleared to broadcast to a supported destination.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Antihost VPS is listed first here: a self-managed Linux VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial; see the current plans. The other paid VPS offers reviewed start at roughly $4–$5 per month, but the lowest price is not automatically the lowest total cost. DigitalOcean is the price benchmark, OVHcloud offers substantially more displayed memory and included features at its entry tier, and Lightsail provides the simplest bundled AWS experience. For continuous video streaming, a managed service such as StreamNeo may be more practical than maintaining a general-purpose VPS.
