Apple’s CEO succession is complete. Tim Cook became executive chairman on September 1, 2026, and John Ternus became CEO and joined Apple’s board the same day. The change gives Apple a new operating chief with deep hardware experience while Cook remains involved at board level, including policy engagement. Near-term product roadmaps are more likely to show continuity than an immediate overhaul; the important questions are how Ternus executes existing plans and, over time, whether he changes Apple’s balance between hardware, services, artificial intelligence and new platforms.
What changed at Apple, and when
Apple announced the succession on April 20, 2026, after its board unanimously approved the transition. The company described the decision as the result of a “thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.” Tim Cook led Apple as chief executive from 2011 through August 31, 2026. On September 1, he moved into the newly defined role of executive chairman, while John Ternus became chief executive officer and joined Apple’s board.

| Date | Event | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| April 20, 2026 | Apple announced the planned handoff | The board publicly identified Ternus as Cook’s successor and said the transition had been planned over the long term. |
| August 31, 2026 | Cook’s final day as CEO | Cook’s 15-year run as chief executive ended. |
| September 1, 2026 | Ternus became CEO; Cook became executive chairman | Ternus took day-to-day executive responsibility, while Cook continued in a board-level role. |
Apple’s leadership biography now identifies Ternus as CEO. That matters because this is not an interim appointment or an unconfirmed internal promotion: the legal and operating handoff has already happened.

Who is John Ternus?
Before becoming CEO, Ternus was Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. Apple credits him with work across generations of iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch products. His background is therefore concentrated in the engineering and delivery of the devices that form Apple’s ecosystem.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
That experience gives Ternus a different résumé from Cook’s. Cook became known for operations, global manufacturing and supply-chain execution before and during his time as CEO. Ternus arrives from the product-engineering side. He knows how hardware programs move from design decisions to production, testing and launch, and he has worked across several product categories rather than only one device.
His appointment does not mean Apple will be run as an engineering department. As CEO, Ternus is responsible for the whole company, including software, services, finance, retail, legal matters and public policy. His technical background is best understood as a starting perspective, not a promise that Apple will prioritize devices over every other business.
Does Tim Cook still have power as executive chairman?
Cook no longer runs Apple’s daily operations as CEO, but executive chairman is a substantive board role rather than an honorary title. He remains involved with the board and with policy engagement, giving Apple continuity in governance and in relationships that were built during his tenure.
The division of labor is consequential. Ternus is accountable for operating decisions, product execution and the company’s results. Cook can advise the board, help preserve institutional knowledge and represent Apple on policy matters without directing every product decision. The arrangement separates the person responsible for running the business from a highly experienced chair who remains closely connected to it.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Apple has not said that Cook will retain a veto over Ternus’s roadmap or that he will continue to approve routine management decisions. It is therefore more accurate to describe the structure as continuity at the board level with a new chief executive, not as two co-CEOs.
Apple’s financial starting point before the handoff
The clearest baseline for judging what changes under Ternus is Apple’s fiscal 2025 net sales. These are reported results, not projections for the period after the succession.
| Category | Fiscal 2025 net sales | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | $209.586 billion | The company’s largest reported category and the central hardware profit engine. |
| Mac | $33.708 billion | A substantial but much smaller category than iPhone, with a distinct customer and upgrade cycle. |
| Services | $109.158 billion | A business large enough to be a strategic pillar rather than a side offering. |
| Total Apple net sales | $416.161 billion | The scale of the company against which later results should be compared. |
Apple’s services group includes offerings such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV and Apple Music. At $109.158 billion in fiscal 2025, Services represented more than a quarter of total net sales, calculated against the reported $416.161 billion total. That mix means a new CEO can influence Apple’s future without changing the iPhone’s physical design: pricing, retention, platform features and the way hardware drives recurring services all matter.
What happens to the iPhone under John Ternus?
The most defensible near-term expectation is execution of the roadmap already in motion. Ternus spent years leading the hardware organization responsible for iPhone generations, so he is familiar with the constraints behind launches: engineering readiness, component availability, manufacturing scale and quality control. A leadership change alone does not establish that a redesign, a new form factor or a different release schedule is coming.

Where continuity is most likely
- Existing iPhone programs should remain governed by the engineering, operations and software teams that already own them.
- Launch timing is more likely to depend on component readiness and testing than on the change in the CEO’s title.
- Apple’s emphasis on an integrated hardware-and-software experience can continue even as the chief executive changes.
What Ternus could change over time
As he gains authority over the full company, Ternus could alter how aggressively Apple introduces hardware changes, how it sequences features between devices and how much engineering capacity is assigned to emerging platforms. He could also make different trade-offs between maximum device capability, manufacturing complexity and margin protection. Those are plausible areas of influence, not commitments Apple has made.
How to judge the iPhone strategy
Look for evidence in several releases rather than treating one model as proof of a new era. Useful signals include whether major hardware changes arrive faster or more slowly than before, whether launch reliability improves, whether Apple changes the balance between premium and standard models, and whether new software or artificial-intelligence features are adopted across the installed base. None of these outcomes follows automatically from Ternus’s appointment.
Will Apple change its Mac strategy?
Ternus’s experience includes Mac generations, but Apple has not announced a post-Cook Mac reset. Mac decisions will continue to reflect engineering capacity, software support, component supply and the needs of professional and consumer buyers.
Near-term implication
A hardware leader taking the top job may reduce the distance between engineering priorities and executive decisions. That could help when Apple must choose which product improvements to ship first or how to coordinate a Mac launch with operating-system features. It does not guarantee a new design language, a different model lineup or a faster upgrade cycle.

What Mac buyers should watch
- Whether Apple maintains a predictable cadence across its desktop and notebook lines.
- Whether software features arrive consistently across Mac and the rest of Apple’s devices.
- Whether product differentiation becomes clearer between consumer and professional systems.
- Whether supply constraints or manufacturing decisions affect availability at launch.
Apple’s fiscal 2025 Mac sales of $33.708 billion provide a reference point for later reports. A single quarter can move because of launch timing or seasonality, so a meaningful strategy judgment requires multiple reporting periods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will Apple services keep growing after the CEO change?
Services enter the Ternus era from a position of scale: $109.158 billion in fiscal 2025 net sales. The category includes iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV and Apple Music, among other offerings. Its performance depends on active users, engagement, pricing, content and payment activity as well as the number of Apple devices in use.
Why hardware leadership matters to Services
Most services are experienced through Apple hardware and operating systems. A CEO with deep device knowledge may focus on making those handoffs simpler and more valuable, such as improving the way a new device activates subscriptions, stores data or enables payments. The strategic question is not hardware versus services as separate businesses; it is how effectively each strengthens the other.

Questions that remain open
- Will Apple prioritize subscriber growth, higher revenue per user or broader use of existing services?
- Will the company change prices, bundles or regional availability?
- How quickly will new software and artificial-intelligence capabilities become reasons to use paid services?
Apple has not announced a services price change, a new bundle policy or an artificial-intelligence timetable as a consequence of the succession. Treating any of those as decided would go beyond the information available.

Four strategic areas to watch under Ternus
1. Product-roadmap cadence
The first test is whether Apple preserves its established release rhythm or accelerates major hardware changes. Continuity would suggest that Ternus is executing plans already approved by the organization. A visible change in cadence across several product lines would indicate a deeper shift in priorities.
2. Hardware versus services
Apple must protect the economics of its device business while expanding recurring services. Watch the relationship between iPhone and Mac demand, the number and use of services, and the way new features are distributed across the installed base. The fiscal 2025 figures are the baseline; they are not a forecast of what Ternus will deliver.
3. Execution and supply chain
Ternus’s engineering background could affect launch reliability, component strategy or the geographic mix of manufacturing. These choices are difficult to infer from a title change. Evidence would come from repeated launch outcomes, reported availability, product-quality patterns and Apple’s own disclosures, not from speculation about one upcoming device.

Apple can use its installed base to distribute new software, AI capabilities and spatial-computing features. The key question is whether Ternus makes those platforms central to the product roadmap or treats them as gradual extensions. Apple has not committed to a particular AI schedule or platform transition tied to the succession.
What the succession does not tell you
- It does not guarantee an iPhone redesign, a foldable device or any particular product launch.
- It does not establish that Apple will raise or lower prices for hardware or services.
- It does not provide a release date for AI features or a new spatial-computing product.
- It does not prove that manufacturing will move to a different country or that suppliers will change.
- It does not mean Cook has left Apple; he remains executive chairman with policy and board responsibilities.
These distinctions are important because Apple’s announcement confirms people, dates and responsibilities. The effects on products and financial results will only become clear through later product announcements and reporting periods.
How readers can evaluate the transition
- Establish the baseline. Use fiscal 2025 net sales of $209.586 billion for iPhone, $33.708 billion for Mac, $109.158 billion for Services and $416.161 billion total.
- Separate announcements from outcomes. A stated feature or launch plan is evidence of intent; availability, adoption and reported sales show execution.
- Check more than one category. A stronger Services result can coincide with slower hardware growth, and a successful iPhone launch does not by itself demonstrate a change in Mac strategy.
- Look for repeated patterns. One delayed shipment or one unusually strong quarter can reflect timing. A sustained change across releases is more informative.
- Track role clarity. Ternus should be judged as the operating CEO, while Cook’s influence should be assessed through board and policy activity rather than day-to-day product announcements.
What the handoff means for Apple users now
For someone deciding whether to buy an iPhone, Mac or Apple service today, the succession is not by itself a reason to delay or accelerate a purchase. Existing products, software support and announced availability remain the relevant facts. The leadership change becomes decision-relevant when Apple publishes a specific product, feature, price or support policy and buyers can compare that information with their needs.
In the bigger picture, Apple has chosen an internal successor with direct knowledge of its hardware pipeline while retaining Cook in a senior governance role. That combination lowers the likelihood of an abrupt operational break, but it leaves room for Ternus to shape priorities over time. The meaningful verdict will come from how iPhone, Mac and Services perform together against the fiscal 2025 baseline—not from the succession announcement alone.
