Apple Arcade is the cheaper, simpler choice for households invested in Apple hardware. It provides hundreds of premium games without advertising or in-app purchases, supports downloads for offline play, and can be shared with up to five other family members. Xbox Game Pass costs more but covers Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and supported cloud devices, with much larger libraries on its higher tiers, online console multiplayer, cloud streaming, partner subscriptions, and day-one releases on selected plans.
The right subscription depends less on the headline game count than on where you play. Choose Apple Arcade for downloaded games on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, or Apple Vision Pro. Choose Game Pass when you need Xbox or PC coverage, cloud access, online console multiplayer, or a steady flow of new Xbox releases.

Apple Arcade and Xbox Game Pass are built for different households
Apple Arcade is a single, Apple-centered game subscription. Apple describes it as unlimited access to hundreds of premium games, with no advertisements and no in-app purchases. Games are installed on supported Apple devices, so the service remains usable when an internet connection is unavailable after the download is complete.

Microsoft separates the service into Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. The plan controls the size of the library and whether you receive day-one releases, online console multiplayer, cloud play, and bundled services such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
That distinction explains why a direct game-count comparison can mislead. Apple Arcade optimizes for a curated, premium experience on Apple hardware. Game Pass optimizes for breadth across console, computer, and streaming devices, with a catalog that changes by tier and region.
Library size, game access, and release timing
| Service or plan | Library listed by the provider | How games are accessed | New-release policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Arcade | Hundreds of premium games; Apple Developer describes a growing collection of more than 200 | Download and play on supported Apple devices, online or offline | New games and updates are added every week, according to Apple Developer |
| Game Pass Essential | 50+ games | Plan-dependent console access; check the current catalog for each title | Day-one access is not listed for this tier |
| Game Pass Premium | 200+ games | Console and supported benefits shown on the plan page | New Xbox-published games arrive within 12 months of launch |
| Game Pass Ultimate | 500+ games | Console, PC, and supported cloud devices | New games are available on day one |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games | Windows PC catalog | Day-one releases are included on the PC plan |
The figures above are provider-listed minimums, not permanent totals. Games rotate, availability can differ by country, and a title may leave one plan while remaining in another. Apple’s “hundreds” wording and its developer description of more than 200 are compatible descriptions of a growing catalog, not a guarantee of an exact count on a particular day.
What the catalogs feel like
Apple Arcade games are selected for a paid, interruption-free model. You do not encounter advertising breaks or prompts to buy virtual currency inside an Apple Arcade game. That makes the service particularly suitable for children or for players who want a consistent experience across a phone, tablet, and Mac. The catalog includes a mixture of arcade, puzzle, strategy, role-playing, adventure, and family-friendly games, but the service is not intended to replace a full console or PC library.
Game Pass has a broader genre range because it spans console blockbusters, independent games, PC releases, and older catalog titles. The larger Ultimate count is useful if several people in a household play different genres. It also reduces the need to buy every game individually, although access lasts only while the title remains in the catalog and your subscription is active.
Day-one releases versus a rotating collection
Release timing is one of the clearest reasons to pay for a higher Game Pass tier. Ultimate includes new games on their release day. PC Game Pass also includes day-one releases. Premium receives new Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch, while Essential does not list day-one access.

Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 announcement says Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass dropped from $16.49 to $13.99. It also says future Call of Duty games will join Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season, approximately a year after launch, while existing Call of Duty titles remain available. Treat that timing as a product-policy statement that can change with future releases.
Supported devices and the way you play
| Question | Apple Arcade | Xbox Game Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | iPhone and iPad; Apple Developer also lists iPod touch | Cloud play on supported devices through the Xbox app or xbox.com/play, subject to plan and regional support |
| Computer | Mac | Windows PC through PC Game Pass or the appropriate Game Pass plan |
| Television or living-room device | Apple TV 4K | Xbox consoles; cloud play may work on supported non-console devices |
| Mixed-reality headset | Apple Vision Pro | Not listed as a standard Game Pass device category |
| Offline play | Download games and play offline | Cloud streaming requires an internet connection; download options depend on the device, plan, and title |
Apple Arcade is therefore a download-first service. Install a game while connected, then continue playing on a supported Apple device without streaming the session. Save synchronization between devices depends on the game and your Apple account setup, so make sure the same account is used and cloud saving is enabled where the game supports it.
Game Pass is designed around Xbox and Windows installations, with cloud streaming extending access to supported phones, tablets, browsers, televisions, and other devices. Microsoft states that games can be streamed through the Xbox app or xbox.com/play on supported devices. A supported device is sold separately; subscribing does not provide an Xbox console, television, phone, or controller.
Can Apple Arcade play on a TV or Mac?
Yes. Apple lists Mac and Apple TV 4K among the supported platforms, in addition to iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro. The exact game selection can vary by device because some games require a particular operating system, input method, or hardware capability. Check the game’s App Store listing before assuming every title runs on every Apple device.
Can Xbox Game Pass work on an iPhone?
Cloud play can work on an iPhone when the device, browser or Xbox app, account, subscription tier, network, and region are supported. The service streams the game rather than installing an Xbox version of the title as a native iPhone app. Performance depends on connection quality and latency, so a fast, stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection is more important than the phone’s local gaming hardware.

Prices and household value in the United States

When Apple Arcade is the better value
- You already own several Apple devices and want one subscription usable across them.
- You want the lowest listed monthly price among these services.
- You prefer installing games for offline travel, commuting, or areas with unreliable internet.
- You want an ad-free experience without in-app purchases.
- Several people in your household can use Apple’s family sharing, which allows the subscriber to share with up to five additional family members, for up to six people total.
The annual Apple Arcade option is especially significant for regular users: $49.99 for a year is lower than paying the $6.99 monthly price for twelve months. The annual figure is a separate payment option, not a claim that every region offers the same discount.
When Game Pass justifies its higher price
- You own an Xbox console or Windows PC and want access to a much larger catalog.
- You play online multiplayer on Xbox; Ultimate includes online console multiplayer.
- You want to stream games to supported devices instead of buying a console immediately.
- You care about new Xbox releases on day one and can use Ultimate or PC Game Pass.
- You will use the bundled EA Play, Fortnite Crew, or Ubisoft+ Classics benefits included with Ultimate.
Game Pass does not list an equivalent family-sharing allowance in the cited plan information. If several people need simultaneous access, check Microsoft’s current account and household rules rather than assuming that one subscription works like Apple’s family sharing.
Feature-by-feature differences that affect your decision
Offline downloads
Apple Arcade’s offline capability is a central feature: download a supported game first, then play without an active connection. Cloud gaming is inherently different. A Game Pass cloud session must continually receive and send data, so an outage, weak signal, or high latency can interrupt play. Downloaded console or PC games may offer offline modes, but the exact entitlement and authentication requirements vary by title and platform.
Online multiplayer
Ultimate includes online console multiplayer, which can remove the need for a separate console multiplayer subscription when playing supported games online. Apple Arcade games can include multiplayer features, but the Apple Arcade description does not promise a universal console-style online multiplayer benefit; each game’s requirements apply.

Partner benefits
Ultimate bundles EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics according to Xbox’s landing page. These extras have value only if you would otherwise use them. Do not assign their full retail price to the subscription if you would not play those games or use those memberships.
Game ownership and cancellation
Neither subscription gives permanent ownership of the included games. Canceling normally ends access when the paid period expires, and a title can leave a catalog before you finish it. For a long-term favorite, buying the game separately may be preferable. Check whether your saves remain usable after cancellation and whether a later purchase preserves progress; those rules are platform- and game-specific.
Do you need a controller?
You can play many Apple Arcade games with touch controls, a keyboard and mouse on Mac, or a remote on Apple TV where supported. A Bluetooth game controller is the most natural shared accessory category when a game’s controls are complex or when you want a console-style experience. Apple documents controller connection, but exact model compatibility depends on the operating system and game.
Game Pass cloud gaming is also playable with a compatible controller, and some titles support touch controls on mobile devices. Touch input is convenient for short sessions but is not equally suitable for racing, action, or competitive games. Before buying hardware, verify the exact controller model, operating-system support, connection method, and retailer availability for your country.
How to start with each service
Apple Arcade setup
- Open the App Store on a supported Apple device and locate the Apple Arcade subscription option.
- Confirm that the Apple Account used for the subscription is the one you want to use across your household devices.
- Subscribe monthly or select the listed annual option if you expect to use the service for most of the year.
- Open the Apple Arcade tab, choose a game, and download it while connected to the internet.
- Test the game on every device you intend to use. Confirm that the device meets the game’s operating-system and hardware requirements.
- For shared use, configure Apple Family Sharing and add up to five additional family members.
- If touch controls are uncomfortable, pair a compatible Bluetooth controller through the device’s Bluetooth settings and check the game’s control options.
Game Pass console, PC, or cloud setup
- Choose Essential, Premium, Ultimate, or PC Game Pass according to the device and benefits you actually need.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that will own the subscription and verify your country or region before payment.
- On Xbox, open the Game Pass area and install an included title or launch a supported cloud game.
- On Windows, install the Xbox app, sign in, and confirm that your PC meets the game’s storage, operating-system, and hardware requirements.
- For cloud play, use the Xbox app or xbox.com/play on a supported device, select a cloud-enabled title, and connect a compatible controller when required.
- Test a short session on your home network before relying on cloud play while traveling. Check latency, data usage, and whether your connection remains stable.
- Review the catalog and plan benefits regularly because game availability and tier rules can change.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Comparing Apple’s “hundreds” with Game Pass’s 500+ as if they were equivalent: the services count different catalogs and support different hardware. Compare the games and devices you will actually use.
- Assuming every Game Pass tier includes day-one releases: the cited policy applies to Ultimate and PC Game Pass; Premium receives Xbox-published games within 12 months, and Essential does not list day-one access.
- Expecting cloud gaming to work offline: streaming requires a continuing internet connection and supported device.
- Buying a controller without checking compatibility: confirm the operating system, Bluetooth or wired connection, and game support before purchase.
- Ignoring catalog turnover: a subscription is access, not ownership. Check departure notices and buy a favorite separately if permanent access matters.
- Assuming prices are universal: the figures in this comparison are US prices. Taxes, currency conversion, promotions, and plan availability differ elsewhere.
- Paying for benefits you will not use: Ultimate is strongest when cloud play, multiplayer, day-one games, and partner services all matter; otherwise a lower tier or Apple Arcade may be more economical.
Which subscription should you choose?
Choose Apple Arcade if
Your primary screens are Apple devices, you value offline downloads and a quiet ad-free experience, and your household can use family sharing. It is the straightforward low-cost option for casual, family, and premium mobile-style gaming.

Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if
You want the largest listed library, Xbox and PC coverage, cloud streaming, online console multiplayer, day-one releases, and the included partner services. Its higher monthly price makes sense when you use several of those benefits rather than only downloading a few games.
Choose PC Game Pass if
You are a PC-only player who wants a 300-plus catalog and day-one PC releases without paying for console or cloud benefits you do not need.
Choose Essential or Premium if
You want a lower-cost console catalog and can accept fewer games or delayed access to Xbox-published releases. Premium is the middle ground for a larger library and games arriving within 12 months of launch, while Essential is aimed at the smallest listed catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line
Apple Arcade wins on price, offline downloads, ad-free play, and family sharing within the Apple ecosystem. Xbox Game Pass wins on catalog breadth, Xbox and PC reach, cloud access, online console multiplayer, and new-release access on the appropriate tiers. Pick the service that matches your main device and play pattern; the larger number of games is not useful if the subscription does not run where you play.
