Apple Arcade is the better default for an iPhone-first player who wants one predictable fee, downloadable games, offline play, no advertising or in-app purchases, and simple family sharing. Steam is the better choice for a Mac-first player who wants the wider PC game ecosystem and already owns a computer that can run those games. On an iPhone, Steam normally works through Steam Link, which streams a game from that computer rather than installing a native iPhone version.
The services are therefore not direct equivalents. Apple Arcade is an all-you-can-play catalog subscription. Steam is primarily a PC game store and library in which you acquire titles individually; Steam Link is a remote-play feature layered on top. Your ideal choice depends on where you play, what hardware you own, how you want to pay, and whether streaming is acceptable.

Apple Arcade and Steam solve different problems
Apple describes Apple Arcade as a subscription that provides unlimited access to hundreds of premium games. After subscribing, you can download any Apple Arcade game available for your device without paying separately for that title. The service is designed around Apple hardware: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K and other supported Apple devices. A game’s availability still depends on its own hardware, software, operating-system and regional requirements.
Steam is a distribution platform rather than an all-access catalog. You buy or otherwise acquire individual games in your Steam account, install them on a compatible computer and keep the entitlement in that account. The breadth is its main advantage: Steam exposes you to the broad PC release ecosystem, including games that are not part of any Apple catalog. The trade-off is that every game has its own price, system requirements, input support and compatibility details.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Steam Link does not change that model. Valve describes it as connecting an iPhone or iPad to a computer running Steam. Remote Play sends the game’s video and audio from the computer to the other device and sends your controls back. The computer remains the machine doing the rendering and running the game.
Quick comparison
| Question | Apple Arcade | Steam with Steam Link |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | A recurring catalog subscription: $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year on Apple’s current product page. | Individual games or other Steam purchases; Steam Link itself is a transport feature, not an all-games subscription. |
| Where games run | Usually installed and run locally on a supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K or other Apple device. | On a computer running Steam. An iPhone generally receives a stream from that host computer. |
| iPhone experience | Download supported games directly from Apple Arcade and play locally, including offline after a successful download. | Use Steam Link to stream from your computer; the phone does not become a native Steam gaming computer. |
| Mac experience | Install the Apple Arcade version when the particular game supports your Mac model and software. | Install the Mac-compatible Steam version when the title supports your Mac and its requirements. |
| Catalog and ownership | Curated catalog available while the subscription and title availability continue. | Broad PC library with games acquired one by one and tied to your Steam account. |
| Advertising and in-app purchases | Apple advertises no ads and no in-app purchases in Apple Arcade games. | Varies by game; Steam’s store model does not impose a single monetization rule on every title. |
| Offline play | Supported for downloaded games when the title and device permit it; an initial download and periodic account checks may still be needed. | Possible for eligible installed Steam games on the computer, but an iPhone using Steam Link requires a connection to the host computer. |
| Family access | Apple advertises sharing with up to six people through Family Sharing. | Access and sharing depend on Steam account and family features, individual game rules and the computers involved; there is no equivalent to Apple Arcade’s single catalog promise. |
| Controller compatibility | Shown on each Apple Arcade listing and dependent on the game, operating system and controller. | Depends on the game, Steam Input or title-specific support, the host computer and the controller recognized by the client device. |
How Apple Arcade works on iPhone and Mac
Subscription access instead of per-game checkout
Apple Arcade replaces individual checkout for its included games with one subscription. Apple’s current product page lists $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year. The annual option costs less than paying twelve monthly charges at that listed rate, but it is still a recurring service rather than a permanent purchase. If you cancel, access to the catalog follows Apple’s subscription terms; it should not be treated like buying each game outright.
Apple also advertises trials and offers for eligible new devices. The cited United States promotion terms specify three free months followed by $6.99 per month. Eligibility, the redemption window and the country in which the offer appears matter, so check the offer shown on your device rather than assuming every new device qualifies.
Native downloads and local play
On a supported iPhone or Mac, you download the game to that device and launch it locally. That removes the host-computer requirement and avoids the image-compression and latency that accompany streaming. You still need enough storage for the game’s download, a supported operating-system version and hardware that meets the listing’s requirements.
Apple advertises offline play. In practice, download the game while online, open it once and allow any account or content checks to complete before leaving a reliable connection. Individual games can impose their own online requirements, and availability can change by region or title. “Offline” should therefore mean that the downloaded game can continue without an active connection, not that every feature of every game is guaranteed to work indefinitely without one.
Family Sharing
Apple advertises Apple Arcade access for up to six people through Family Sharing. The family organizer sets up the Apple family group, subscribes, and eligible members use their own Apple accounts. Each person can keep separate saves and recommendations. The six-person figure is a maximum for the family group, not six additional subscriptions.
Mac support is title-specific
Apple Arcade spans iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV 4K, but the same catalog entry is not a promise that every title runs on every device. Check the game’s listing for Mac availability, the required macOS version, supported Mac models and controller information. An iPhone-optimized game may not have a Mac build, while a game that runs on a newer Mac may not support an older model.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How Steam and Steam Link work on iPhone
Steam is a purchased library, not a Netflix-style game pass
Steam lets you acquire games individually. That can cost more up front than a monthly catalog subscription, but each purchase is associated with your Steam account instead of remaining available only while a catalog subscription includes it. Prices, discounts, system requirements and the ability to run a title on macOS are determined game by game.
This model is valuable if you already own a large Steam library or want a particular PC release that Apple Arcade does not carry. It is less predictable for a casual player who wants to browse, download and play without checking a separate price for every title.
What Steam Link actually does
Valve says Steam Link connects an iPhone or iPad to any computer running Steam. Remote Play sends video and audio from the gaming computer to the other device. The iPhone displays the stream and returns touch or controller input; it does not install the desktop game or execute it locally.
You therefore need a host computer that is powered on, signed in to Steam, able to run the game and reachable by the iPhone. Valve documents macOS hosts, so a Mac can serve as that computer when the game itself supports macOS and the Mac meets its requirements. A Windows or other supported Steam computer can also be the host, but the same principle applies.
Basic Steam Link setup
- Prepare the host. Install Steam on the Mac or other compatible computer, sign in to the account that owns the game, install the game and launch it once locally to verify that it runs.
- Connect the network. Put the iPhone and host on a stable, low-latency network. A wired connection from the host to the router is often more consistent than relying on Wi-Fi for both ends.
- Install Steam Link. Download Valve’s Steam Link app on the iPhone and follow its pairing process. The app searches for a computer running Steam and displays a pairing code when it finds one.
- Pair the devices. Enter the code on the host computer. If the devices do not see each other, confirm that Steam is running, both devices are on the expected network and local-network access is allowed for the app in iOS settings.
- Run the connection test. Steam Link can test the connection and expose streaming-quality settings. Start with a conservative quality level, then increase it only if the stream remains stable.
- Choose controls. Use the on-screen controls for a quick test, or pair a compatible Bluetooth controller. The game, Steam Input configuration and controller layout determine what works best.
- Start the game from the Steam Link library. The host computer launches the title and streams its output. Closing Steam Link or shutting down the host ends the remote session.
Because the host is essential, Steam Link is not a substitute for a gaming-capable computer. It can make a Mac or PC game playable from a phone, but it cannot make an underpowered host render a demanding title or bypass that title’s macOS compatibility.
Offline play, latency and reliability
Apple Arcade’s offline advantage
For travel, commuting or places with unreliable internet, Apple Arcade has the simpler path: download a supported game to the iPhone or Mac before leaving. There is no live video stream to maintain, so a brief loss of connectivity does not automatically interrupt the game. Save synchronization and online multiplayer can still require a connection.
Why Steam Link is network-sensitive
Steam Link continuously transports a live video signal and your input. Latency can come from the host’s rendering time, the network path, Wi-Fi interference, router load and the phone’s decoding. A fast internet plan alone does not guarantee a good experience, especially when the iPhone and host are communicating over a congested wireless network.

- Use Ethernet for the host when possible.
- Keep the phone close to a capable Wi-Fi access point and prefer a less congested band.
- Reduce stream resolution or bandwidth when you see stutter, blocky video or delayed controls.
- Close downloads and other high-bandwidth activity on the host and network.
- Test the exact game you intend to play; a slow strategy game may remain comfortable at latency that makes a fast action game frustrating.
Remote play outside your home can work when the host and network are configured for it, but it adds more variables. For a dependable trip without a host computer, Apple Arcade’s local download model is the safer fit.

Catalog breadth versus catalog simplicity
When Steam’s breadth matters
Steam is the stronger route when your priority is access to the PC ecosystem rather than a tightly edited mobile catalog. You can shop for a particular genre, follow a developer’s releases, use an existing library and take advantage of individual sales. The cost is research: check each game’s macOS support, processor and graphics requirements, storage needs, controller behavior and whether it performs acceptably on your Mac.
A Steam purchase also does not guarantee an iPhone version. If the game lacks a native iOS release, your practical phone option is Steam Link from a running host. Some games may have interfaces that are awkward on a small touch screen even when the stream itself is technically successful.
When Apple Arcade’s curation matters
Apple Arcade reduces that store-by-store decision making. The subscription gives you a curated collection, and Apple advertises that included games have no ads or in-app purchases. That makes it easier to hand an iPhone or iPad to a child, try several genres without separate checkouts and keep the same subscription available across supported Apple devices.
The catalog is also a constraint. “Hundreds” is Apple’s description; no independently audited, permanently fixed total should be assumed. Games can be added, updated or become unavailable, and the exact set differs by region and device. If one specific game is the reason you are subscribing, verify its listing before paying.
Controllers and accessibility of play
Touch controls are convenient for some Apple Arcade games but are not ideal for every genre. Apple exposes controller support on the individual Arcade listing. A compatible Bluetooth controller can provide more precise input on iPhone, iPad and Mac, but compatibility is a property of the controller, operating system and game together.
Steam’s options are broader but less uniform. A title may support a controller directly, rely on Steam Input mappings or expect a keyboard and mouse. When streamed through Steam Link, the controller must be recognized by the iPhone or the host according to the chosen setup, and the game must receive the resulting inputs correctly. Test menus and gameplay, not just whether the controller appears connected.

For either service, a controller with the correct iPhone and Mac compatibility is the most reliable physical-accessory upgrade. Do not assume that a controller advertised for one Apple device supports every other device or every game.

Apple Arcade’s predictable budget
The listed Apple prices are $6.99 monthly or $49.99 annually. At the monthly rate, twelve months would total $83.88 before taxes, so the listed annual plan is lower for someone who expects to use the service throughout the year. The value is highest when several people use the catalog or when you would otherwise buy multiple included games. It is lower if you only want one title for a short period or rarely play.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The three-month free offer in the cited United States terms applies only to eligible new devices and then changes to $6.99 per month. Confirm eligibility and the renewal date during activation so an unused trial does not become an unwanted recurring charge.
Steam’s variable spend
Steam has no single monthly price that grants every game. Your spending follows the titles you choose, their sale prices and any expansions or additional purchases a game offers. That can be cheaper than a subscription if you play a small number of discounted games for years, or more expensive if you regularly buy new releases.
Compare the model that matches your behavior: Apple Arcade charges for ongoing catalog access; Steam charges per game but can leave you with a lasting account entitlement. Neither price alone answers which is better.
Which service fits common player profiles?
Choose Apple Arcade if you are iPhone-first
- Your main screen is an iPhone or iPad and you want games to run locally.
- You want one recurring charge instead of evaluating individual game prices.
- You need downloads that remain usable when you are offline.
- You prefer a catalog without advertising or in-app purchases.
- Several people in your Apple family group will play; Apple permits up to six family members.
- You do not want to leave a Mac or PC powered on as a streaming host.
Before subscribing, confirm that your must-play titles support your iPhone or Mac model and are available in your region.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Steam if you are Mac-first
- You primarily play on a Mac or another computer that can run the games you want.
- You value access to the wider PC release ecosystem and an existing Steam library.
- You are comfortable buying games individually.
- You can provide a stable network and a powered-on host when playing on iPhone.
- You accept checking each title’s macOS, controller and performance requirements.
If iPhone play is central rather than occasional, remember that Steam Link is streaming. It is not the same as downloading a native iPhone game.

Choose both when their roles are different
A Mac-first player can use Steam for demanding or specialized computer games and Apple Arcade for quick, family-friendly or offline sessions on an iPhone. The two libraries are not interchangeable, so paying for both makes sense only when you will use both access models. Cancel or pause the catalog subscription when its included games no longer justify the recurring fee.
Troubleshooting the most common surprises
“The Apple Arcade game is not on my Mac”
Open the game’s listing and check the supported platforms, macOS version, Mac model and region. A title can be included in Apple Arcade yet be limited to iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. Updating macOS may be necessary, but an update cannot add support when the developer has not released a Mac build.
“Steam Link sees my Mac but the game will not start”
Launch the game directly on the Mac first. Confirm that the Mac meets the title’s requirements, that Steam is signed in to the account that owns it and that the game is not waiting for a first-run dialog on the host. Then reconnect Steam Link. A title that cannot run locally on the host cannot be repaired by streaming.

Run Steam Link’s connection test, lower the streaming quality, move the iPhone closer to the access point and connect the host by Ethernet if possible. Stop competing downloads and test again. If only one fast-paced game feels unplayable, its control timing may exceed what your network can deliver even though slower games work.
“The controller connects but the game ignores it”
Check the game’s listing or Steam controller configuration, then test the controller in the title’s menu. On Apple Arcade, support is shown per listing. On Steam, try the title’s recommended Steam Input layout or a direct wired/Bluetooth connection to the host, depending on how your setup is paired.
A practical decision in one minute
- If you need games to run directly on an iPhone without another computer, start with Apple Arcade.
- If you want a broad computer library and already own a capable Mac, start with Steam.
- If you want iPhone access to Steam games, verify that you can keep the host computer running and that your network passes a Steam Link test.
- If family sharing, offline downloads, no ads and no in-app purchases are decisive, Apple Arcade has the clearer documented offer.
- If a specific game determines the decision, check that game’s current platform, region, controller and hardware requirements before subscribing or purchasing.
Prices, free-trial eligibility, catalog membership, operating-system support and controller compatibility can change. Recheck the current Apple listing, promotion terms and the individual Steam game’s requirements at the time you subscribe or buy.
