Yes, an iPhone can use an app marketplace other than Apple’s App Store, but not everywhere. Apple currently permits marketplace installation from a marketplace developer’s website in Brazil, Japan and the European Union. In the EU, your Apple Account must be set to an EU country, you must be physically in the EU, and the device must meet Apple’s software requirements. EU users can also install apps directly from authorized developer websites.
The trade-off is not simply “safe versus unsafe.” Alternative distribution apps receive Apple notarization, but they are not subject to the App Store’s full review and commerce rules. The marketplace operator, rather than Apple, normally controls curation, support, refunds, payments and data practices. Family purchase sharing and Ask to Buy can stop working, and a marketplace shutting down can strand apps or force repurchases. For most people who value predictable support, family sharing and continuity, the App Store remains the simpler default; an alternative marketplace makes sense when a specific app or payment option justifies those trade-offs.

App Store and alternative marketplaces at a glance
| Question | Apple App Store | Alternative app marketplace or web distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Broad iPhone availability, subject to Apple Account and local rules | Eligibility depends on country, physical location, Apple Account region, device and iOS version |
| Review model | Notarization plus Apple’s broader App Review and content, safety and commerce policies | Notarization is required for covered distribution, but the channel can carry content Apple would not permit in the App Store |
| Who supports purchases | Apple supports App Store purchases, Apple In-App Purchase, Family Sharing and related services | The marketplace or developer handles its own support, payment disputes, subscriptions and refunds |
| Family purchasing | Family Sharing purchase sharing and Ask to Buy are integrated when Apple’s systems process the purchase | Those features may be unavailable for purchases not processed through the App Store and Apple In-App Purchase |
| Updates and continuity | Apple provides a stable distribution account and update path | The marketplace supplies updates; closure or deletion of the marketplace can affect app operation |
| Payment choice | Apple In-App Purchase and any permitted external links | Third-party payment systems and web checkout can be used where permitted |
“Alternative app marketplace” means a third-party app that discovers and distributes other apps. “Alternative distribution” is broader: it includes marketplaces and direct installation from an authorized developer’s website.

European Union
Apple’s current support and developer documentation allow EU users to install alternative marketplaces and, from authorized developer websites, install iPhone and iPad apps. Three conditions matter at the same time:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Your Apple Account region must be an EU country.
- You must be physically located in the EU when using the alternative-distribution features.
- The device must run at least iOS 17.4 for iPhone or iPadOS 18 for iPad, according to Apple’s published capability requirements.
Changing an Apple Account region alone does not satisfy the location requirement. Likewise, being in the EU with an account registered elsewhere does not make the feature eligible. Apple can change eligibility as policy, software or regulation changes.
Brazil and Japan
Apple says users in Brazil and Japan can install an alternative marketplace from that marketplace developer’s website. The available data does not establish the same web-distribution scope or identical software thresholds for those countries, so check the on-device eligibility message and the marketplace operator’s current instructions. Availability can differ by account, device and date.
Everywhere else
In countries not covered by Apple’s current alternative-distribution rules, the App Store remains the normal iPhone installation channel. A website offering an unapproved installation method is not equivalent to an authorized marketplace and should be treated as a separate security decision.
How installation works
The exact prompts can change with iOS releases, but the process follows this pattern for an authorized marketplace:
- Confirm eligibility. Check your country, Apple Account region, physical location and iOS version. In the EU, verify iOS 17.4 or later on iPhone; iPad users need iPadOS 18 or later for the documented capability.
- Use the operator’s official website. Start from the marketplace company’s own domain, not a download mirror, advertisement or unsolicited link. The website begins the marketplace installation flow.
- Read the installation sheet. Apple says the sheet displays the developer, app description, screenshots, age rating and other information before installation. Treat this as an identity and disclosure check, not as a guarantee that the app meets every App Store rule.
- Approve the marketplace installation. Follow the iPhone confirmation prompts. If the device reports that your region, account or software is ineligible, do not try to bypass the restriction; resolve the eligibility issue or use the App Store.
- Review the marketplace’s terms. Look for its app-selection policy, privacy notice, payment processor, refund route, update policy and contact details. Apple requires authorized EU marketplace operators to publish terms and data-collection information, but you still need to read those terms.
- Install individual apps inside the marketplace. Note which channel supplied each app. The source determines where updates, subscriptions and purchase records are managed.
- Record recovery information. Save the marketplace account details, support address and subscription-cancellation instructions before relying on an app for work, authentication or stored data.
Installing a marketplace does not move your existing App Store library automatically. An app obtained through one channel and the same app obtained through another can be treated as separate purchases.
Security: notarization is a baseline, not App Store approval
What notarization checks
Apple describes notarization as a review applied across distribution channels. Automated checks and human review look for known malware, viruses, other security threats, promised functionality and egregious fraud. The installation sheet gives you identifying and descriptive information before you accept the app.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Those checks are important, but they answer a narrower question than “Does this app follow all App Store rules?” Notarization is a platform-integrity gate. It does not mean Apple has approved the app’s business model, advertising, subscription terms, content policy or every privacy practice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the App Store adds
App Store distribution combines notarization with Apple’s standard App Review and enforcement of content and commerce policies. Apple says App Store apps meet its higher standards for user safety, security and privacy. This additional review is why an app can be notarized for another channel yet not appear in the App Store.
Content differences
Apple says alternative channels may include content that the App Store does not allow, including pornography, hate speech, weapons and some adult-only tobacco, alcohol or legal-drug material. Some such apps may be unrated. If an iPhone is used by a child or managed by an employer, the channel’s catalog and rating practices deserve as much attention as the individual app.
A practical safety check
- Install only from the marketplace operator’s genuine website and verify the developer name shown by the installation sheet.
- Compare the app’s stated purpose with the permissions it requests. A flashlight that asks for unrelated account or location access deserves scrutiny.
- Read the marketplace privacy policy, not only the app’s store description. Determine whether the operator shares download, account or payment data.
- Prefer marketplaces that explain moderation, malware response and developer verification in plain language.
- Keep iOS updated and remove a marketplace you no longer trust. Deleting it can affect apps obtained through it, so check each app’s recovery path first.
- Do not assume a familiar app name identifies the genuine developer; use the developer identity and support details displayed before installation.
Privacy and marketplace governance
An alternative marketplace is itself a third-party service. Apple does not manage its catalog, account system, analytics, payment records or customer-support operation. The operator’s privacy policy determines what it collects and how it uses data, while each distributed app has its own practices.
For authorization in the EU, Apple’s published requirements include enrollment of the marketplace organization in the Apple Developer Program; a primary purpose of discovering and distributing notarized apps; published terms for distributed apps; transparent data-collection policies; user controls over data; moderation and content processes; anti-fraud measures; and the ability to handle payment disputes and refunds. These requirements establish responsibilities for the operator, not a promise that every marketplace will provide the same experience as Apple.
Apple explicitly warns that its ability to help with problems involving apps obtained outside the App Store is limited. That includes marketplace failure, app quality or safety concerns, privacy questions, scams, payment security, subscriptions and refunds. Before installing, identify whom you would contact if the operator disappeared or a charge were disputed.

Support, refunds and subscriptions
App Store purchases
When Apple’s App Store and Apple In-App Purchase process a transaction, Apple provides support for the purchase and related services. Family Sharing and Apple’s purchase records are tied to that system, making it clearer where to request help or review a subscription.
Alternative-marketplace purchases
The marketplace or app developer normally controls support, payment disputes and refunds. Apple may not be able to reverse a charge, restore a subscription or investigate a scam involving a transaction it did not process. Read the operator’s refund terms before buying, and keep invoices outside the app in case the marketplace account becomes inaccessible.
External payment links
The European Commission explains that the Digital Markets Act requires Apple to allow third-party app stores or web distribution, let developers steer users to outside purchase channels, and avoid forcing Apple’s in-app payment system. A developer can therefore offer a web checkout or another processor, but that does not automatically create an Apple refund entitlement or Family Sharing record.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For subscriptions, determine three things before paying: which company charges you, where cancellation occurs, and whether an app installed from another channel can recognize the entitlement. Do not cancel an Apple subscription in a third-party marketplace’s account page, or vice versa, without confirming which system owns the billing relationship.
Family Sharing, Screen Time and parental controls
Apple says Screen Time, parental controls and Spotlight continue to function with alternative distribution. However, three purchase-related features are not supported when Apple’s App Store and Apple In-App Purchase are not facilitating the transaction:
- Screen Time restrictions on in-app purchases
- Family Sharing purchase sharing
- Ask to Buy
This distinction matters. A parent may still restrict app use or set downtime, but may not receive the same approval request or shared-purchase record for an app or in-app item bought through another channel. Families should set a household rule that purchases use the App Store unless the parent can independently review the third-party receipt and cancellation terms.

Fees and payment economics in the EU
Alternative distribution changes the developer’s payment options, but a lower developer commission is not automatically a lower price for consumers. Apple’s current EU terms list the following figures:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Distribution or transaction | Published Apple term | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Covered digital transactions involving alternative marketplaces, apps distributed through them or Web Distribution | 5% Core Technology Commission | A developer or marketplace charge under Apple’s EU terms; it is not a guaranteed consumer discount |
| Qualifying small marketplace operator | Waiver available below €10 million global revenue in the previous 12 months and below €1 million lifetime revenue from marketplace download or access fees | Eligibility depends on the stated thresholds and Apple’s terms |
| App Store sales processed through Apple In-App Purchase | 26% in Apple’s EU table | Developer economics for the listed arrangement |
| Qualifying small-business or certain subscription cases in the App Store | 15% in Apple’s EU table | Applies only to the qualifying cases described by Apple |
These are EU developer terms, not a universal iPhone price list. They can change, and a developer may retain savings, pass some through, or set a different price for each channel. Compare the final amount, tax, renewal price and refund policy shown at checkout rather than inferring a discount from the commission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updates, app ownership and continuity risks
The channel that delivered an app usually supplies its updates. An app installed from an alternative marketplace may not update through the App Store, and an app installed from a developer website may depend on that developer’s signing and distribution service.
Apple warns that an app obtained through an alternative marketplace could stop functioning if the marketplace ceases operation or is deleted. If you reinstall the same app through another distribution method, previously purchased apps or in-app purchases may need to be paid for again. This can happen even when the app name and developer appear identical, because the two channels may use different purchase records.
Before making an alternative app central to your workflow:
- Check whether the developer offers export, backup or account-based restoration.
- Find out how updates are delivered if the marketplace is unavailable.
- Confirm whether subscriptions are recognized across App Store, marketplace and web versions.
- Keep installers, recovery codes and important data in a separate, accessible location where the developer permits it.
- Know how to uninstall the marketplace without losing access to an app you still need.
Which channel fits common situations?
| Your priority | Usually the better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One account for purchases, refunds and subscriptions | App Store | Apple’s support and purchase records cover the transaction |
| Family Sharing and Ask to Buy | App Store | Those purchase controls may not work for alternative transactions |
| A specific app unavailable in the App Store | Authorized alternative marketplace or developer website, if eligible | Alternative distribution can offer apps outside App Store catalogs |
| More payment choice or a developer’s web checkout | Alternative distribution, with caution | DMA rules permit external channels in the EU, but support and refund responsibility shifts |
| Strict content filtering for children | App Store | Alternative channels may carry content Apple excludes or leave some apps unrated |
| Lowest long-term continuity risk | App Store | The distribution account, updates and support are centralized |
| Control over operator data practices | Whichever channel publishes the clearest policy | Read the marketplace and app privacy terms; notarization is not a privacy certification |
Troubleshooting common problems
The marketplace cannot be installed
Recheck the three EU gates: Apple Account region, physical location and operating-system version. A non-EU account, travel outside the EU or software below iOS 17.4/iPadOS 18 can block the feature. In Brazil or Japan, confirm that you began from the marketplace operator’s own website and that the service still supports your device.

An app has no update
Open the marketplace that supplied it and check its update mechanism. If the marketplace has been deleted or shut down, contact the app developer through the account or support address you recorded. Do not assume the App Store will adopt the installation automatically.
A purchase or subscription is missing
Identify the original billing channel from the receipt. Sign in to that marketplace, developer account or Apple Account rather than switching randomly between them. If the original operator is unavailable, Apple may be unable to restore a transaction it did not process.
A refund is denied
Send the request to the party that charged you and follow its published dispute process. Apple’s App Store support cannot guarantee assistance for a third-party marketplace purchase.
A child can install or buy something unexpectedly
Review Screen Time and device restrictions, then check whether the purchase occurred outside Apple In-App Purchase. Because Ask to Buy and purchase sharing may not apply, a family may need a separate approval rule for every alternative marketplace account.
What the EU regulatory record means
On April 23, 2025, the European Commission said it had closed its investigation into Apple’s user-choice obligations after Apple changed its browser choice screen. The Commission also issued preliminary findings that Apple’s alternative-distribution contract terms could breach the Digital Markets Act, citing the Core Technology Fee, strict eligibility requirements and burdensome installation.
Those were preliminary, dated enforcement findings—not a final ruling that every current Apple term is unlawful. They do show that fees, eligibility and installation steps remain subject to regulatory change. Recheck Apple’s terms and European Commission decisions when making a long-term business or purchasing decision.
Bottom line for iPhone users
The App Store is the safer operational default when you need unified support, family purchasing, predictable refunds and the least chance of losing access after a marketplace closes. An authorized alternative marketplace can be worthwhile in an eligible region when it provides an app or payment route you specifically need. Treat notarization as a minimum security screen, investigate the operator’s privacy and refund policies, verify who supplies updates, and assume that Family Sharing, Ask to Buy and cross-channel purchase restoration may not be available.
