Both configurations include active noise cancellation (ANC); at their U.S. launch prices, the $149 Wireless Charging Case version adds useful controls and charging features over the $129 standard model.
What you get, and what each version costs
Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, and U.S. availability began September 18. The prices below are the announced U.S. launch prices, not a guarantee of today’s price; check current listings before buying. Apple’s announcement describes both configurations.

Apple does not list sound or ANC as differences between the two configurations. The $20 step is for case and control conveniences, plus a longer battery rating—not a stated upgrade to noise cancellation.

ANC helps reduce noise, but the open-fit design does not seal the ear canal. That distinction matters: without a silicone tip forming a passive seal, some sounds can remain audible even when ANC is on.

Apple says its testing found up to 50% more external noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC. The company says the comparison used testing conducted in July 2026 under IEC 60268-24; this is an Apple-reported result, not a promise of the same reduction for every listener or environment. Apple’s announcement and test qualification provide the claim’s context.
Independent reviews found ANC useful but not equivalent to the isolation of sealed earbuds. Tom’s Guide reported that higher-frequency sounds and indistinct conversation could still be heard. T3 described announcements remaining audible in a train example. Those are individual review experiences, not universal test results. Will the open fit suit you?
AirPods 5 have no silicone ear tips, which can be a benefit if in-ear tips feel uncomfortable or you want to remain more aware of your surroundings. The trade-off is that comfort and stability depend on how the earbuds fit your ears, and the lack of a seal limits passive noise blocking.

- Look at sealed earbuds too if your priority is quiet on a commute, strong isolation, or blocking conversation and other ambient noise.
Fit is personal, so try them on if you can before committing.

Battery life: the key compromise for long sessions
Apple’s maximum playback ratings vary by configuration and noise-control setting. They are manufacturer ratings; actual battery life depends on use and settings. Apple’s AirPods 5 specifications list these figures.

The Wireless Charging Case model’s extra rated hour with ANC may help if you routinely listen for several hours at a time. But even its five-hour maximum is modest for uninterrupted listening. In T3’s individual test of that model, continuous ANC listening lasted about four and a half hours before the battery reached 12%; that result describes one review unit, not a guaranteed runtime.

Does the $20 case upgrade make sense?
Choose based on whether you will use the added features. The Wireless Charging Case version offers wireless charging, stem volume control, a speaker to help locate the case with Find My, and one additional hour of Apple-rated playback with ANC. If those conveniences matter, the $20 launch-price premium is easy to explain. If you do not need them, the standard version still has ANC and is the lower-cost configuration.
Are AirPods 5 a good choice with non-Apple devices?
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3 and says AirPods can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, though some functionality may be limited. Full functionality requires an Apple device running current operating-system software. That makes AirPods 5 a more natural purchase for someone already using Apple devices than for a buyer who expects every feature to work across platforms. Apple’s specifications describe the compatibility qualification.

Should you buy AirPods 5?
Buy them if you want open-fit earbuds, dislike silicone tips, use Apple devices, and view ANC as a helpful reduction in noise rather than full isolation. Consider the Wireless Charging Case version if wireless charging, stem volume control, the Find My case speaker, or its extra rated ANC hour justify the launch-price premium for you.
Skip them or compare sealed alternatives if you need strong noise blocking, regularly listen for long stretches without a charging break, or want a secure fit that an open earbud may not provide. AirPods 5 make the most sense when comfort and Apple integration matter more than a sealed, quiet listening experience.
