App Health Dashboard APIs: Three Metric Boundaries That Expose Silent Game Imports

A green health endpoint can show that an import worker is running while yesterday’s game data never reached the database. To detect that failure, treat every scheduled window as a durable run with an explicit terminal outcome, then alert when a successful result is missing after its deadline. Use dashboard metrics for trends and ownership, but keep run-level truth in a ledger, log, or trace.

The right hosted health API is the one that preserves those run boundaries, evaluates missing windows independently of the producer, exposes ingestion failures, and attributes telemetry costs to the workload that generated them.

What an app health dashboard must prove

Scheduled game imports fail silently when availability and correctness are measured as if they were the same thing. A worker can answer an HTTP probe, accept an upstream response, parse a payload, or increment a counter and still commit zero usable records. Each check proves a different boundary:

  • Availability: a process or endpoint responds.
  • Execution: a scheduled window was attempted.
  • Correctness: validated records were accepted and the final transaction committed.
  • Timeliness: the expected outcome arrived before its deadline.

Your dashboard should make these boundaries visible instead of collapsing them into one green status. A process probe remains useful for a dead worker or unreachable service, but it cannot prove that a due import ran, that an empty feed was legitimate, or that records survived a database rollback.

The three metric boundaries

Boundary What it demonstrates What it cannot demonstrate Best evidence
Process or probe health The worker responds to a request or heartbeat. That a scheduled window ran, produced records, or committed successfully. Uptime poll, readiness check, process metric.
Instrumented aggregate metrics Observed counts, durations, errors, and gauges over time. Which individual run failed or whether an expected run was never created. OpenTelemetry instruments with a working SDK aggregation and export path.
Durable run ledger plus aggregate exports Every due window has a recorded terminal outcome tied to a job and deadline. Nothing beyond the detail retained in the ledger and its access controls; aggregates alone still do not replace run records. Run records as the source of truth, low-cardinality metrics for dashboards.

OpenTelemetry separates metric instruments from SDK aggregation and export. Declaring a counter or histogram does not create a dashboard by itself; an SDK must aggregate it and an exporter must deliver it to a backend. Design the ledger first, then make metrics a bounded view of that ledger.

Make each scheduled window a first-class run

Use one logical identity for the due window

Give each job and UTC schedule window a stable key, such as catalog-sync/2026-10-20T12:00:00Z. Retries receive separate attempt IDs, but they refer back to that one logical run. If every retry creates a new logical run, duplicate attempts can hide the fact that the original window never reached a terminal result.

Materialize the expected-run record before execution, or have an independent scheduler create it. The record should contain the job, window start, deadline, region and environment, creation time, and a state that distinguishes “expected” from “completed.” Store attempts separately so operators can inspect timeouts, upstream responses, and retry causes without changing the identity of the due window.

Define success at the commit boundary

HTTP 200 from an upstream game feed is not success. Neither are successful parsing or writes staged before a transaction rolls back. Mark a run successful only after validation passes, accepted records are known, and the final database transaction commits. Persist the terminal outcome atomically with the imported records whenever possible. If the architecture cannot do that, use an outbox or reconciliation process that makes an incomplete pair visible.

Represent legitimate empty windows explicitly

Some windows legitimately contain no new games. Record an outcome such as empty_expected (or an equivalent status) only when the source contract and validation rules establish that emptiness is acceptable. An unexplained zero-record result is not success; it should remain failed, unknown, or require investigation according to your policy.

Detect a silent import without relying on completion events

  1. Define the schedule in UTC. Specify the logical job key, expected interval, deadline, and accepted-empty rule. A 15-minute schedule can be an illustrative example, but it is not a universal alert threshold; choose a deadline from the source’s delivery behavior and your freshness requirement.
  2. Create the expected run. Write the ledger row before work begins, or let an independent scheduler materialize it. This prevents a stopped scheduler from making the absence of a row look normal.
  3. Record attempts. Add an attempt ID, start and finish timestamps, upstream result, validation result, and error details. Keep retries attached to the same logical window.
  4. Commit records and outcome together. The terminal state should be success, empty_expected, failed, or another documented state only after the commit boundary is reached. A rollback must not leave a misleading success marker.
  5. Evaluate overdue windows independently. A separate evaluator queries expected windows whose deadlines have passed and checks for an accepted terminal result. It must continue running even if the producer or scheduler is down.
  6. Alert on missing accepted outcomes. Trigger an absence alert only after the configured deadline. Distinguish overdue from failed, and distinguish both from evaluator failure.

If the ledger cannot be read or the evaluator itself fails, report unknown, not healthy. Monitor evaluator lag, query errors, and last successful evaluation as separate service-health signals; otherwise a broken monitor can create a false green dashboard.

Export metrics that stay useful and affordable

Choose bounded dimensions

Export a completion counter such as import_completed_total with stable attributes for job, region, environment, and outcome. Use outcomes such as success, empty_expected, and failed. A duration histogram can use the same bounded dimensions. A gauge for overdue windows and a measurement for evaluator lag help operators see freshness without reading every run.

Do not put an unbounded run ID in a metric attribute. Run IDs create a new time series for every execution, increasing storage and query cost while making dashboards harder to operate. Keep the run ID, player identifier, email address, access token, and raw payload in a governed ledger, log, or trace, where high-detail correlation belongs.

Keep aggregate and run-level questions separate

Metrics answer questions such as “How many imports failed in this region today?” and “Is duration rising?” The ledger answers “Which 12:00 UTC window is missing?” and “Did the transaction commit?” Link a dashboard point to a run search or trace when possible, but do not attempt to encode every run detail into labels.

Instrument the export path, not just the code path

Verify that the OpenTelemetry SDK is configured to aggregate instruments, that the exporter can reach its backend, and that the backend retains the expected series. A counter defined in application code but never exported is not observability. Include exporter errors and dropped-data counts in operational monitoring.

Keep the evaluator independent of the producer

The producer records what happened; the evaluator decides whether something that should have happened is missing. Run the evaluator on a separate schedule or service boundary, and give it access to the ledger even when import workers are unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use explicit alert states

  • Healthy: the window has an accepted terminal outcome and the evaluator read succeeded.
  • Overdue: the deadline passed without an accepted outcome.
  • Failed: the run reached a terminal failure such as validation or commit failure.
  • Unknown: the evaluator could not read the ledger or complete its check.

Alert policies should page on overdue or failed windows according to business impact, while routing unknown evaluator states to the team that owns monitoring. A heartbeat or uptime poll can remain a separate availability signal; it should never clear an overdue-import alert.

How to assess a hosted health API

Hosted products differ in terminology and current pricing, so verify capabilities and terms in current documentation or a trial. The decision is less about a brand name than about whether the service preserves run semantics and gives you operational and financial control.

Capability to verify Questions to ask Why it matters for silent imports
Idempotent outcome submission Can the same logical window be updated safely after retries? Can an accepted-empty outcome be represented? Prevents duplicate attempts from masking a missing or contradictory result.
External-schedule absence evaluation Can the service detect a missing result after a deadline without depending on a completion event? A stopped scheduler or worker must still produce an overdue signal.
Ingestion-failure visibility Are rejected events, exporter failures, and dropped telemetry visible? A green application process should not hide a broken observability pipeline.
Ownership dimensions Can dashboards group by job, region, and environment without using run IDs as labels? Teams can route incidents while keeping series cardinality bounded.
Retention and deletion controls Can you set retention and delete raw events as well as aggregates? Run-level data may contain identifiers or payload fragments that require governance.
Regional data-flow transparency Where are events processed, stored, and backed up? A hosting region alone does not prove where every copy travels.
Workload-attributable pricing Can event volume, metric series, alert evaluations, and retention be assigned to a job or team? Owners can forecast and control telemetry costs instead of receiving one opaque bill.

Potential approaches include Infrai, Datadog, Grafana Cloud, Sentry, and Healthchecks.io, but their capabilities and current terms must be checked against the criteria above before adoption. Do not assume that a product offering a heartbeat check also supports idempotent run outcomes or independent absence evaluation.

Govern data before sending telemetry

Metric labels should contain only bounded operational dimensions. Exclude player identifiers, email addresses, access tokens, raw payloads, and unbounded run IDs. Store sensitive correlation data in a controlled ledger, log, or trace with access policy, encryption, retention limits, and an erasure workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GDPR Article 17 describes a right to erasure subject to conditions and exceptions. Consequently, verify a provider’s deletion behavior for raw events, backups, indexes, and derived aggregates; do not infer deletion capability from a hosting region. Document which records are necessary for audit or fraud controls and which can be removed on request.

Test the boundaries before production alerting

Rehearse each path with a test job and inspect both the ledger and dashboard:

  • Normal import with committed records.
  • Legitimate empty source window recorded as empty_expected.
  • Missed window with no attempt.
  • Duplicate retry against one logical window.
  • Upstream success followed by validation failure.
  • Database rollback after records were staged.
  • Ledger-read failure or evaluator outage.
  • Exporter outage with application processing still healthy.

For each case, confirm the expected terminal state, metric series, alert timing, ownership dimensions, and recovery behavior. Verify that a retry cannot overwrite a prior success with a contradictory result without an auditable transition, and that an evaluator outage produces unknown rather than healthy.

A practical operating model

Start with one import job and one region. Define its UTC windows and deadline, create the ledger schema, and implement atomic outcome recording. Add the evaluator before adding a paging rule, then export the bounded counter, duration, overdue gauge, and evaluator-lag measurement. Once the normal and failure rehearsals produce the intended states, extend the same model to other jobs and regions.

This separation gives operators two reliable views: a low-cardinality dashboard for trends, ownership, and cost, and a durable run history for forensic answers. The process endpoint still tells you whether the worker is alive, but only the run ledger and deadline-aware evaluator can tell you whether scheduled game data actually arrived and committed.
