Choose the Apify screenshot Actor when you need scheduled captures of public pages and its batch handling, ready-made options, and managed runs are worth the per-capture fees. Choose DIY Puppeteer when you need custom browser interactions or processing and can operate the browser runtime, scheduler, storage, and failure handling yourself. Neither option guarantees access to every site.
This is a feature-and-operations comparison, not a benchmark: no comparative speed, reliability, or cost test is available. The Apify Store listing discussed here is the community-maintained Website Screenshot and PDF Actor, ID reestri/web-screenshot, not an Apify-maintained product.

What you are choosing between
The hosted Actor packages a public-website screenshot workflow into an Apify run: submit URLs and capture settings, then process per-URL records and file links. Apify schedules can start an Actor or task at configured times. DIY Puppeteer gives you browser automation and screenshot APIs; the recurring trigger, deployment, logs, retries, and output pipeline are yours to build and operate.

How the options compare
| Decision point | Apify Website Screenshot and PDF Actor | DIY Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring runs | Apify schedules can start Actors or tasks at configured times; configure the Actor and schedule in the platform. | The screenshot API does not provide the recurring schedule. Add a scheduler appropriate to your deployment and handle missed or duplicate triggers. |
| Setup and operations | Ready-made input and managed runs reduce the work for ordinary public-page captures. You still need to inspect results and manage files and retention. | You own browser installation and configuration, deployment, scheduling, logs, retries, output naming, storage, and maintenance. |
| Capture behavior | Published options include viewport, full-page and element captures; formats; device presets; dark mode; wait options; and optional CSS-based banner hiding. | Code can implement interactions and processing specific to your workflow. Results depend on your implementation and the target site. |
| Batching | The listing allows up to 1,000 public URLs per run, with concurrency set to two by default and a stated maximum of five. | You choose batch size and concurrency. There is no basis here to claim a throughput advantage without testing your workload. |
| Cost and infrastructure | The listing charges per stored output and a run-start fee. Apify compute, storage, and other account-level usage may also affect total cost. | No Actor event fee applies to a self-hosted design, but hosting, browser compute, storage, and engineering and maintenance time still have costs. |
| Output and retention | Results include dataset metadata and files in the run key-value store. Unnamed run storage follows plan retention limits. | You select and maintain the destination, retention policy, backups, naming, and access controls. |
| Access | Designed for anonymous public websites; it does not log in, solve CAPTCHAs, rotate proxies, or defeat automated-browser blocks. | Puppeteer offers browser-level flexibility, but does not grant permission or guarantee access. Respect site rules and access controls. |
When the Apify Actor is the better fit
- Your URLs are public and can be captured without signing in.
- You want recurring runs configured through Apify rather than a browser worker and scheduler you maintain.
- The Actor’s standard capture settings cover your needs, including viewport, full-page, selector, device, image or PDF, and wait controls.
- You are comfortable with the listed per-output and run-start charges, plus any relevant account-level costs, and have a plan for retaining files.
Its cookie-banner option hides selected elements with CSS; it does not accept or reject a consent choice. It also refuses private-network targets, so it is not suitable for internal dashboards.
When DIY Puppeteer is the better fit
- Your workflow needs site-specific interaction or post-processing beyond the Actor’s published input options.
- You already have a suitable runtime and can take responsibility for the schedule, browser installation, retries, logs, storage, and upkeep.
- You need to control where outputs are stored and how long they are retained.
Puppeteer’s flexibility is not a guarantee that a site will allow automation. Validate your implementation against the real pages and run schedule you care about; there is no comparative reliability or speed result established here.
What the Actor costs—and what the figures include
The current Store listing, reviewed in 2026, lists these charges. They are listing prices, not a complete quote for every account or workload; check the live listing and your account pricing before estimating a recurring bill.
| Listed item | Price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Stored viewport or element screenshot | $0.002 each | Per stored output, according to the Actor listing reviewed in 2026. |
| Stored full-page image | $0.004 each | Per stored output, according to the Actor listing reviewed in 2026. |
| Stored PDF | $0.004 each | Per stored output, according to the Actor listing reviewed in 2026. |
| Run start | $0.002 | Default fee for a run configured with 2 GB memory, according to the Actor listing reviewed in 2026. |
The listing says unsuccessful URLs are not charged, and billing occurs after a file is stored. A run can nevertheless contain individual failed records, and URLs can be skipped after the configured maximum run cost is reached. Budget for the outputs you expect, the start fee, and applicable platform usage; do not treat the per-file figures as a total-cost guarantee.

Batch limits, full-page captures, and result handling
- Batch size and concurrency: The listing permits up to 1,000 public URLs per run, with a default concurrency of two and maximum of five. These are configuration limits, not evidence of a particular completion time.
- Full-page height: The default maximum is 15,000 px. The height limit is configurable, and a capture can be marked truncated if it reaches the limit. WebP has a documented height constraint for very long images; consult the Actor’s current input documentation when format and page length matter.
- Per-URL status: Inspect each record’s status or error. A successful Actor run does not mean every URL succeeded.
- Retention: Unnamed run storage follows the plan’s retention period; it is not a long-term archive guarantee. Download files you need or copy them into a named store with a retention policy suited to your use.
How to schedule recurring captures with Apify
- Set up a capture run: Open the Website Screenshot and PDF Actor listing and configure the public URLs and capture settings you need.
- Run a test and inspect every record: Check output links and per-URL errors rather than relying only on the overall run result. Confirm that capture dimensions and any full-page limits suit your pages.
- Set the schedule: Use Apify’s schedule configuration to start the Actor or a task at the times you need. Apify describes schedules as a way to automatically start Actors at certain times.
- Plan output retention: Decide whether the run’s files need to be downloaded or copied into a named store before the applicable retention period expires.
- Monitor recurring runs: Review failed or skipped URLs and adjust the inputs, maximum run cost, or schedule as needed. Do not assume a completed run produced a file for every URL.
How to build a recurring Puppeteer capture
Puppeteer captures a page; it does not schedule recurring runs or decide your storage and recovery policies. A minimal one-shot Node.js capture looks like this, using the documented Page.screenshot() API:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60_000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This is a single capture, not a recurring service. To make it recurring, deploy it in an environment that can run a browser, invoke it with a host or operating-system scheduler, and implement output retention, logging, retries, and duplicate-run handling. The example assumes the installed Puppeteer package and its browser are configured for the runtime; it does not handle authentication, consent choices, site-specific interactions, or blocked access.
Package and runtime configuration
Puppeteer’s installation and configuration depend on the package and environment. In particular, puppeteer-core ignores Puppeteer’s standard configuration files and environment variables. Check the official configuration guide and installation guide for the package you use, including browser setup. Do not assume configuration that works with puppeteer will apply unchanged to puppeteer-core.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first if you want a screenshot API rather than operating a browser worker. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its API documentation lists capture options and parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.
Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting common failure points
- Some Actor URLs fail but the run completes: The Actor reports per-URL results. Inspect each record’s status and error, then address the affected URL or capture setting; run-level completion is not proof that all captures succeeded.
- URLs are skipped: The listing says URLs may be skipped after the configured maximum run cost is reached. Review the cap and expected batch cost before scheduling.
- A full-page image is truncated: Check the configured height limit and the listing’s 15,000 px default. Increase the limit if appropriate, or use an output format and page length compatible with the documented constraints.
- A banner remains visible: The Actor’s option hides elements with CSS and is not a consent interaction. It may not match every banner or selector; confirm the target page and available settings.
- An internal or login-protected page cannot be captured: The Actor is for anonymous public pages and refuses private-network targets. It does not log in or solve CAPTCHAs. Puppeteer may support custom interactions, but that does not grant access or guarantee success.
- Puppeteer cannot find or launch a browser: Check browser installation and package configuration for your runtime. If using
puppeteer-core, remember it ignores Puppeteer’s standard configuration files and environment variables. - Recurring runs are missing or duplicated: A scheduler and run coordination are part of your DIY system. Review the scheduler’s trigger history and implement a policy for missed starts and duplicate invocations.
- Old Actor files are no longer available: Unnamed run storage is subject to plan retention. Download the files or copy them to a named store before they expire.
Decision
For recurring captures of public pages that fit the Actor’s published controls, Apify trades per-output charges for a managed run and platform scheduling. DIY Puppeteer trades that ready-made workflow for direct browser control and responsibility for the surrounding system. Choose based on the interaction you need, your operational capacity, expected volume, and output-retention requirements—not on an untested assumption that one is faster or more reliable.
Apify’s Store listing and pricing may change; review the live Actor listing before committing. For API details on the alternative, see ScreenshotNeo’s docs.
