Anubis vs. Cloudflare Turnstile: Which Anti-Bot Protection Is Better for Open-Source Sites?

For most open-source sites, Cloudflare Turnstile is the practical default: it is managed, can be embedded without moving the whole site onto Cloudflare’s network, and offers several levels of visitor interaction. Anubis is the stronger choice when self-hosting, infrastructure independence, or protection in front of an upstream application is non-negotiable. The trade-off is operational work and a greater risk of challenging legitimate crawlers.

There is no authoritative, directly comparable detection-rate benchmark showing one product universally wins. The better decision depends on where you need the control point, how much maintenance your team can absorb, how much friction visitors and bots can tolerate, and whether using a hosted verification service fits your project’s requirements.

Quick comparison

Decision factor Anubis Cloudflare Turnstile
Product type Self-hosted, open-source web AI firewall utility Hosted widget and verification service
Primary position in the stack In front of an upstream resource, where it can challenge incoming requests Inside a page or form, with a browser widget producing a token that your server verifies
Infrastructure control Runs in your infrastructure; you control deployment, policy and data path Challenge delivery and token verification depend on Cloudflare, even when your site is not proxied through its network
Visitor modes Request challenges whose scope and strictness depend on your policies Managed, Non-Interactive and Invisible modes
Maintenance responsibility Deployment, upgrades, reverse-proxy integration, policy tuning and monitoring remain with your team Cloudflare operates the challenge and verification service; you maintain widget integration, secret handling and server-side validation
Best-known use Broad scraper protection before requests reach an upstream application Form and application-interaction protection, especially when minimizing user friction matters
Licensing and stated plans MIT-licensed open-source software; the project material does not establish total hosting or operating cost Free plan allows up to 20 widgets; Enterprise adds expanded limits and controls

That table describes the architectural difference rather than a universal security ranking. A site can also use both products in different layers, although doing so increases complexity and should be justified by a specific threat model.

What Anubis is designed to do

A self-hosted control point

Anubis is described by its official project as “a Web AI Firewall Utility” that “weighs the soul of your connection” with one or more challenges to protect upstream resources from scraper bots. In practical terms, it is software you deploy and operate alongside the service it protects. Requests encounter Anubis before they are passed to the upstream application, allowing the operator to decide which traffic should be challenged, admitted or blocked.

Because it is self-hosted and MIT-licensed, Anubis fits projects that need an independently controlled enforcement point. This is relevant to open-source maintainers who cannot use a third-party edge service, have a policy against routing security decisions through an external provider, or want to keep the anti-bot component inside their own infrastructure and operational processes.

What that control costs

Self-hosting does not mean zero cost. Your team must provide compute, networking, deployment automation, logging, upgrades, reverse-proxy integration and incident response. You also own the policy decisions: which crawlers are allowed, when a challenge is presented, how long a decision is trusted and what happens when a challenge service or policy rule behaves unexpectedly.

The project documentation characterizes broad blocking as “a bit of a nuclear response.” That warning matters for public open-source sites. A rule that stops an aggressive scraper may also affect small legitimate crawlers, accessibility tools, package mirrors, feed readers or research systems that do not resemble a major search engine. Anubis therefore works best when the operator is prepared to tune policies and maintain allowlists or exceptions for traffic that the project needs.

What Cloudflare Turnstile is designed to do

A hosted widget and server verification flow

Turnstile is a hosted verification service. You place its browser widget on a page, usually a form or another interaction that deserves an anti-automation check. The widget produces a token, and your server sends that token to Cloudflare’s Siteverify API. The server-side check is mandatory: treating the browser’s token as proof without verification would allow a client to bypass the control.

Turnstile tokens expire after 300 seconds, or five minutes, and each token can be validated only once. Your application should therefore verify the token promptly, reject reused tokens, and handle an expired token by asking the visitor to obtain a fresh one rather than retrying the old value.

Using Turnstile without moving the whole site

Turnstile can be embedded on a website without sending all traffic through the Cloudflare network. That makes it compatible with an existing CDN, reverse proxy or hosting arrangement. The independence is only partial: the page still loads the widget and your server still relies on Cloudflare’s Siteverify service for validation. Sites that require the entire anti-bot path to remain under their own operational control should treat that dependency as a deciding constraint.

Visitor-facing modes

Cloudflare provides Managed, Non-Interactive and Invisible modes. Managed mode lets the service choose an appropriate interaction for the visitor and risk signal. Non-Interactive mode is intended to reduce friction while still performing a check. Invisible mode removes a visible widget from the normal page presentation, although your application still has to process the token and the verification result correctly. The choice affects usability, accessibility testing and how clearly visitors understand why a submission was delayed or rejected.

How the data path differs

Anubis request path

With Anubis, the protection point is part of the request path to the upstream application. A typical flow is:

  1. A client requests a resource exposed through the Anubis-protected endpoint.
  2. Anubis evaluates the request and any signals used by the configured policy.
  3. The client receives a challenge when the policy requires one.
  4. Requests that satisfy the policy are forwarded to the upstream service.
  5. Requests that fail, violate a rule or match a blocked category are denied before reaching the upstream.

This placement is useful when the problem is not limited to one form. It can reduce the number of scraper requests that reach documentation, code browsing, search, download or API resources. It also means a policy mistake can affect a much larger portion of the site than a mistake on one form.

Turnstile generally sits at a specific interaction:

  1. The browser loads a page containing the Turnstile widget.
  2. The widget performs its check and exposes a token to the page.
  3. The visitor submits the form or action with that token.
  4. Your server receives the submission and sends the token, together with the required secret, to Siteverify.
  5. Your server accepts the action only when the verification response is successful and matches the expected site and action context.

This is an application control, not a blanket gate for every request. A direct POST that never loads the form may never encounter the widget. High-volume requests to other resources can also continue unless you add controls such as rate limiting.

Implementation guide: adding Turnstile correctly

1. Choose the interaction you are protecting

Start with a concrete action: account creation, login, password reset, comment submission, issue filing, contact form or another endpoint that is being automated. Do not assume that adding a widget to one page protects unrelated API routes or direct requests.

2. Register the site and select a widget mode

Create the site configuration in Cloudflare’s Turnstile dashboard, record the site key for the browser integration and keep the secret key on the server. Select Managed, Non-Interactive or Invisible according to the interaction and accessibility requirements. Keep the mode decision separate from authorization: a successful challenge should indicate that the request passed the anti-bot check, not that the user is allowed to perform the business action.

3. Render the widget in the page

Load the Turnstile client code using Cloudflare’s documented integration method and render the widget in the target form. Ensure that the token is included in the submitted request. For a single-page application, account for navigation and re-rendering so a token is not silently reused after the five-minute lifetime or after a previous validation.

4. Validate on the server

On every protected submission, send the received token to Siteverify from your server using the secret key. Do not call the verification API from browser code, expose the secret, or trust a field that merely claims the widget succeeded. Check the response before creating an account, accepting a post, issuing a password-reset message or performing another side effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Handle expiry and single-use behavior

A 300-second lifetime is a hard operational detail, not a suggestion. Long forms, paused browser tabs and slow review workflows can produce expired tokens. A token that has already been validated cannot be validated again. Return a clear retry path that refreshes the widget and preserves safe form data where possible.

6. Add controls outside the form

Use rate limiting for repeated requests, including direct calls to the endpoint and requests that bypass the page. Track verification failures, latency and unusual request patterns. Turnstile should be one signal in the application’s abuse controls, not the only control protecting an endpoint.

Implementation guide: deploying Anubis

1. Place it deliberately

Decide which upstream resources need protection and put Anubis in front of those resources through your existing reverse-proxy or ingress design. A documentation site may need a different boundary from an authenticated API, a package registry or a static asset host. Broadly protecting everything increases the chance of affecting legitimate traffic.

2. Define the first policy conservatively

Begin with a policy that records suspicious traffic and challenges the narrowest useful set. Identify the requests you are trying to stop: high-rate scraping, automated page traversal, suspicious user agents, or traffic patterns that exhaust upstream resources. Avoid a global block until you understand the normal crawler and client population.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Preserve required legitimate bots

Open-source projects often depend on crawlers for search visibility, documentation indexing, release discovery and mirrors. Build an explicit process for recognizing and allowing required bots. Do not assume that every legitimate crawler will look like a large commercial search engine or will be easy to authenticate.

4. Connect and observe the upstream

Verify that successful challenges are forwarded with the headers, paths, methods and client information your application expects. Monitor upstream error rates, response times and challenge outcomes. A reverse-proxy integration that works for a browser page can still break API clients, downloads or long-lived connections.

5. Tune challenges and exceptions

Use logs and reports to distinguish scraper activity from false positives. Adjust challenge scope, add allowlists where justified and document each exception. Because Anubis operates before the upstream, an overly strict rule can prevent an otherwise healthy application from seeing the request at all.

6. Maintain the service

Plan upgrades, configuration review, backup and rollback procedures. Treat Anubis as production infrastructure rather than a one-time plugin. Test policy changes against normal browsers, command-line clients, documented APIs and known crawlers before applying them broadly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visitor friction and accessibility

Turnstile gives you an explicit friction dial. Managed mode can adapt the experience, Non-Interactive mode is designed to reduce visible interaction, and Invisible mode can keep the normal page layout clean. Even with low-friction modes, you must test keyboard navigation, screen-reader announcements, blocked scripts, strict privacy settings and slow connections. A token failure should explain what the visitor can do next rather than presenting an unexplained form error.

Anubis can impose friction before a visitor reaches the requested resource, not only when submitting a form. That may be appropriate for a site under active scraping pressure, but it broadens the impact of every challenge. The project’s warning that smaller scrapers and good bots can be affected should be treated as an accessibility and discoverability concern as well as a technical one. Monitor failed requests from real users and maintain a rapid way to relax a rule.

Coverage: form protection versus upstream protection

The central coverage distinction is where the challenge appears. Turnstile protects an interaction that includes the widget and server verification. It does not automatically shield every route, download or API method on the domain. Direct POSTs, scripted calls that never render the form and high-volume requests to unprotected paths can bypass that form-level control.

Anubis is aimed at traffic reaching an upstream resource. It can therefore address scraper behavior across more than one form, provided the protected boundary includes those resources and the policy recognizes the traffic. That broader reach also makes mistakes more consequential. A policy that blocks a legitimate package mirror or crawler can affect the project’s ecosystem, not just one submission endpoint.

Why layering is often the practical answer

For login and submission endpoints, a layered design is usually more resilient than choosing one mechanism as a universal replacement. Turnstile can challenge automation at the point of interaction, while rate limiting controls repeated attempts and direct requests. An upstream gate such as Anubis can be considered when the threat includes broad scraping before requests reach the application.

Layering should be intentional. Each layer adds latency, configuration, logs and failure modes. Define which layer owns a decision, how a visitor recovers from a challenge, and which requests are exempt. Avoid stacking challenges on every page simply because each tool is available.

Maintenance and operational workload

Anubis responsibilities

  • Provision and monitor the service in your infrastructure.
  • Integrate it with the reverse proxy, ingress or load-balancing path.
  • Upgrade the software and test configuration changes.
  • Review challenge policies as scraper behavior changes.
  • Maintain allowlists for legitimate crawlers and important clients.
  • Investigate false positives, upstream failures and challenge loops.
  • Retain enough logging to diagnose abuse without creating unnecessary privacy exposure.

This workload is the price of retaining the control point. Teams that already operate an ingress tier and security monitoring may find it manageable. Small volunteer projects should budget maintainer time, not just server resources.

Turnstile responsibilities

  • Embed the widget on every protected interaction.
  • Keep the secret key out of browser code and source repositories.
  • Call Siteverify from the server for every relevant token.
  • Reject expired, missing, invalid or previously used tokens.
  • Handle service errors and provide a retry path.
  • Monitor verification failures and form-abuse rates.
  • Review plan limits and dashboard settings as the site grows.

Cloudflare operates the challenge and verification infrastructure, reducing the amount of anti-bot machinery your team must run. It does not remove application work: an incorrectly integrated or client-trusted widget is still an ineffective control.

Cost, licensing and dependency trade-offs

Anubis is MIT-licensed open-source software. That establishes the software license, not the total cost of operation. Compute, bandwidth, storage for logs, monitoring, maintenance and the engineering time needed for policy tuning can all contribute to the real cost.

Cloudflare lists a Free plan supporting up to 20 widgets. It also lists an Enterprise plan with expanded limits and controls. Those limits and features are plan-specific and can change, so confirm the current terms for your organization. Even on a free plan, the site remains dependent on Cloudflare for widget delivery and Siteverify validation.

For an open-source project, the right accounting question is not simply “Which license is free?” Compare the recurring maintainer effort, outage assumptions, migration difficulty and policy control. A hosted service may be cheaper in volunteer hours while being unacceptable for a project that requires every security decision to run on self-controlled infrastructure.

Which option fits common open-source scenarios?

You need protection on registration, login or comments

Choose Turnstile first when the abuse is concentrated in identifiable forms and you want the smallest visitor burden. Add rate limiting and server-side abuse checks because the endpoint can still be called directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot use Cloudflare as a service dependency

Choose Anubis when policy, contractual, geographic or architectural requirements prohibit reliance on Cloudflare’s widget and Siteverify service. Confirm that your team can operate the reverse-proxy integration and respond to false positives.

You are losing capacity to broad scraping

Consider Anubis at the upstream boundary when requests to many resources are exhausting the application. Start narrowly and preserve legitimate crawlers. If the high-volume traffic is concentrated on forms or APIs, rate limiting and application-level controls may solve more of the problem with less site-wide friction.

You want minimal maintenance

Turnstile is generally the better fit because challenge delivery and verification infrastructure are managed. Your team still owns integration and secret handling, but it does not need to run the anti-bot service itself.

You need both independence and low-friction forms

There is no single product that provides both a fully self-hosted control plane and a hosted, low-maintenance widget. Use Anubis for the resources that truly require an upstream gate and implement a self-controlled form strategy for individual interactions, or accept the hosted dependency of Turnstile for those forms. Document the boundary instead of presenting the combination as one unified service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to stop AI scrapers on a self-hosted site

Neither product should be described as a guaranteed detector for every AI crawler. Scraper behavior changes, clients can imitate ordinary browsers, and legitimate automation can look similar to abusive automation. A practical self-hosted defense starts with the resource and the cost of abuse:

  1. Identify the expensive paths. Measure which pages, search endpoints, feeds, downloads or APIs consume disproportionate CPU, bandwidth or database time.
  2. Put a control at the right boundary. Use an upstream gate for broad request pressure, a form challenge for interaction abuse, and rate limiting for repeated calls.
  3. Protect direct interfaces. Ensure APIs and POST endpoints do not rely on a browser widget that a script can simply skip.
  4. Preserve useful automation. Create documented policies for search crawlers, mirrors, package clients and accessibility tools that the project needs.
  5. Measure false positives. A lower scraper count is not a success if contributors, users or indexing systems are also blocked.
  6. Iterate from logs. Change one policy at a time, observe the result and keep a rollback path.

Anubis can be part of this design because it challenges traffic before it reaches the upstream. Turnstile can be part of it when the abuse occurs at a specific browser interaction. Neither replaces capacity planning, authentication, authorization, input validation or rate limiting.

Common failure modes and fixes

Turnstile appears to pass, but the server accepts forged submissions

The usual cause is trusting a browser field instead of calling Siteverify from the server. Move validation to the server, keep the secret private and make the business action conditional on a successful response.

Valid submissions fail after a visitor waits

The token may have exceeded its 300-second lifetime or already been consumed. Refresh the widget and submit a newly issued token. Do not retry the old token.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct API calls continue despite a Turnstile widget

The caller is bypassing the page. Apply authentication, rate limiting and server-side request controls to the API or endpoint itself. A form widget only covers requests that actually include and validate its token.

Anubis blocks search indexing or project tooling

The policy is broader than the project’s crawler requirements. Review logs, identify the affected clients, add narrowly scoped exceptions and retest. Avoid replacing a broad block with an undocumented permanent allowlist that could be spoofed.

Anubis challenges every request after a proxy change

Check the reverse-proxy integration, forwarded headers, client identity handling and upstream expectations. Confirm that successful challenge responses are routed correctly and that health checks, API clients and long-lived connections are covered by an explicit policy.

Visitors see repeated challenges

Look for cookies or client state not surviving the proxy path, policy rules that invalidate a successful result, clock or session inconsistencies, and multiple layers challenging the same request. Simplify the path temporarily to identify which layer is causing the loop.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The documented facts establish a meaningful architectural comparison: Anubis is self-hosted open-source software intended to protect upstream resources from scraper bots, while Turnstile is a hosted widget and verification workflow. They do not establish a shared laboratory test, a percentage of bots blocked, a false-positive rate or a universal winner. Any article or product decision that assigns one a precise detection advantage without a comparable test is overstating the evidence.

Evaluate your own traffic with the metrics that matter to your project: requests reaching the upstream, resource consumption, successful and failed form submissions, challenge completion, crawler coverage, support reports and maintainer time. Keep the measurement window and policy version with each result so a change can be interpreted later.

Rollout checklist

  • Write down the abuse you are trying to reduce and the resources it affects.
  • Decide whether the control must be self-hosted or may depend on Cloudflare’s service.
  • Choose a narrow first boundary instead of challenging the entire site by default.
  • For Turnstile, keep the secret server-side and validate every token with Siteverify.
  • For Anubis, test reverse-proxy behavior, upstream headers and non-browser clients.
  • Add rate limiting to protected forms and APIs where repeated or direct requests are possible.
  • List legitimate crawlers, mirrors and automation that must continue to work.
  • Define recovery for expired tokens, failed challenges and false positives.
  • Monitor latency, resource use, acceptance rates and complaints after deployment.
  • Document who can change policy and how to roll back an overly broad rule.

Verdict

Choose Cloudflare Turnstile when your priority is a managed service, low integration friction, multiple widget modes and form-level protection that can coexist with your existing hosting or CDN arrangement. It is the sensible starting point for most open-source sites, provided you validate tokens on the server and add rate limiting for direct or repeated requests.

Choose Anubis when self-hosting and infrastructure control are requirements, when you cannot or will not rely on Cloudflare, or when scraper traffic must be challenged before it reaches an upstream application. Accept the operational burden and tune policies carefully because broad challenges can block legitimate crawlers and other useful clients.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Better” is therefore a design decision, not a detection-rate claim: Turnstile optimizes for managed, low-friction interaction checks; Anubis optimizes for a self-controlled gate in front of upstream resources.
