For most small businesses, centrally managed antivirus is the starting point. Add endpoint detection and response (EDR) when you need to see suspicious activity after a file is opened, investigate how an attacker moved through a device, hunt for related threats, or isolate and remediate endpoints. If nobody can triage alerts and coordinate containment, use a managed EDR or managed detection and response (MDR) service through a qualified managed service provider (MSP).
Antivirus and EDR are not interchangeable labels. Antivirus is primarily a preventive control; EDR adds endpoint telemetry, behavioral detections, investigation, and response. The right choice depends less on company size than on your data, ransomware exposure, staffing, compliance obligations, operating systems, and ability to act on an alert.

Antivirus and EDR solve different parts of the same problem
Antivirus is the malware-protection baseline on a workstation or server. It scans files and processes, compares them with known signatures, uses cloud intelligence, detects suspicious behavior, and blocks or quarantines threats. Modern products are not limited to a static list of virus fingerprints: Microsoft describes Defender Antivirus as part of next-generation protection that also uses anomaly detection for malware that does not match a predefined pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEDR is an investigation and response layer for endpoints. It records and analyzes activity such as process launches, command-line use, scripts, account logons, persistence attempts, network connections, and file changes. Security staff can use that history to determine what happened, identify affected devices, isolate an endpoint, remove malicious artifacts, and search for the same behavior elsewhere.

The practical distinction is timing. Antivirus aims to stop a malicious object before it runs or spreads. EDR helps you understand and contain an attack when prevention fails, when the activity is fileless or disguised as legitimate administration, or when the business needs evidence of the incident and its scope.
What antivirus provides for a small business
Preventive malware controls
A centrally managed antivirus platform normally provides real-time scanning, scheduled and on-demand scans, cloud lookups, signature updates, behavioral blocking, quarantine, and policy enforcement. Central management matters: an administrator can apply one policy, verify that devices are reporting, and see whether protection and updates are disabled.
Antivirus is effective against common malware, commodity ransomware, malicious downloads, infected email attachments, and many known attack patterns. It also reduces the chance that an employee accidentally runs a harmful executable. However, a clean scan does not prove that an account was not stolen, that an attacker did not use a legitimate tool, or that no other device is compromised.

Traditional antivirus reporting may show that a file was blocked without providing a complete timeline. It may not answer which account launched the file, what PowerShell command followed, which credentials were accessed, whether another endpoint received the same payload, or whether an attacker established persistence before detection. Those questions become important during a targeted intrusion or ransomware event.
What EDR adds
Endpoint activity visibility
EDR collects endpoint telemetry and presents it in a searchable console. Depending on the product and operating system, that can include process trees, command lines, user and logon activity, registry or configuration changes, script execution, network destinations, and file operations. Retention periods and available sensors vary, so confirm them for every device type you operate.
Behavioral detection and investigation
EDR looks for combinations of actions that indicate an attack, even when no single file is classified as malware. Examples include a document spawning a script interpreter, a credential-dumping attempt, unusual remote administration, or encryption behavior across many files. Analysts can pivot from one alert to related processes, accounts, hashes, domains, and hosts, then build a timeline of the intrusion.
Response and containment
Common response actions include isolating a device from the network while preserving a management channel, terminating a process, quarantining an artifact, stopping a service, removing persistence, and collecting investigation data. Automated investigation and remediation can handle routine actions, but a person still needs to validate business impact and decide when to restore connectivity.

Microsoft describes Defender for Endpoint as providing preventative protection, post-breach detection, automated investigation, and response for Windows endpoints. EDR is most valuable when that post-breach capability is a requirement rather than an optional feature.
Antivirus vs EDR: comparison for decision-makers
| Decision factor | Centrally managed antivirus | EDR |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Prevent, detect, quarantine, and remove malware. | Detect suspicious behavior, investigate incidents, and respond after or during a compromise. |
| Typical evidence | Scan results, blocked files, quarantine events, and protection status. | Process trees, endpoint timelines, user activity, network indicators, and related-device searches. |
| Best fit | Businesses needing a baseline control for a limited number of endpoints. | Businesses needing behavioral detection, threat hunting, containment, or incident evidence. |
| Staffing requirement | Periodic policy and alert review, updates, backups, MFA, and incident procedures. | Frequent alert triage, investigation, tuning, and coordinated containment, unless outsourced. |
| Deployment complexity | Usually lower; deploy an agent, configure policies, and verify reporting. | Higher; deploy sensors, integrate identity and management systems, define response permissions, and tune detections. |
| Operating-system coverage | Depends on the antivirus edition and supported platforms. | Depends on the EDR sensor, plan, and platform; verify Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile, and server support separately. |
| Cost to budget | Software plus administration time. | Software plus administration, investigation time, and possibly a managed service. |
Is antivirus enough for a small business?
Antivirus can be enough as the endpoint layer when the business has modest risk, a small and well-understood device estate, and the discipline to maintain the controls around it. That means centrally managed policies, automatic updates, tested backups, phishing-resistant or app-based MFA where possible, least-privilege accounts, patching, and a written incident procedure with named contacts.
Do not treat “antivirus is enough” as “nothing else is required.” Antivirus cannot compensate for exposed remote services, reused passwords, unpatched internet-facing systems, untested backups, or an administrator who never sees protection failures. At minimum, verify every endpoint is enrolled, reporting, updating, and protected; review detections; and test that a quarantined device can be isolated and recovered.
Antivirus becomes a weak fit when the company would be unable to answer basic incident questions after an alert: what ran, which account was involved, which other devices are affected, and whether the attacker still has access. Those are signals to evaluate EDR.
When should a small business move from antivirus to EDR?
Move beyond antivirus when one or more of these conditions is true:
- Sensitive data: You hold health, financial, legal, customer, intellectual-property, or regulated information where a short undetected intrusion could cause material harm.
- Meaningful ransomware exposure: File shares, production systems, remote access, or operational downtime would make encryption especially damaging.
- Credential-theft risk: Administrators, finance staff, developers, or remote workers have privileges that an attacker could abuse.
- Need for behavioral detection: You want alerts on suspicious use of legitimate tools, scripts, remote administration, or unusual process chains rather than only malicious files.
- Investigation obligations: Customers, insurers, regulators, auditors, or your own leadership expect an evidence-based account of an incident.
- Multiple locations or platforms: A distributed workforce and mixed operating systems make manual checking impractical.
- Repeated unexplained alerts: A recurring malware event, account compromise, or suspicious endpoint activity requires faster scoping than antivirus reports provide.
EDR is not automatically the right answer for every small company. If no one can respond to alerts, buying an advanced console without monitoring can create false confidence. In that case, pair EDR with an MSP-delivered managed service.
Who monitors EDR alerts when there is no security team?
EDR generates information; it does not guarantee that someone will interpret it at 2 a.m. A business without a security employee should evaluate managed EDR or MDR from an MSP. The provider typically supplies continuous or scheduled alert triage, investigation, escalation, and assistance with isolation and recovery.

- How the provider contacts your named incident owners and what happens if nobody responds.
- Whether investigation includes cloud identities, email, firewalls, and servers or only endpoint agents.
- What telemetry is retained, for how long, and whether you can export it if you change providers.
- How onboarding, policy tuning, false-positive handling, incident reports, and post-incident reviews are delivered.
CISA’s StopRansomware guidance recommends centrally managed antivirus and advises using application allowlisting and/or EDR on all assets so only authorized software runs and unauthorized software is blocked. For a small business, an MSP can provide the personnel needed to turn that guidance into an operating process. Datto likewise describes MSPs as a way to deliver EDR to underserved small and midsize businesses.
Can antivirus and EDR run together?
Yes, but the interaction depends on which antivirus is primary and how the products are configured. Running two products does not automatically double protection; it can increase conflicts, resource use, duplicate alerts, and uncertainty about which product is allowed to quarantine or isolate a device.
Microsoft Defender with a non-Microsoft antivirus
Microsoft documents that when a non-Microsoft antimalware client is active, Microsoft Defender Antivirus can enter passive mode. In passive mode, Defender Antivirus does not perform real-time protection scans, scheduled scans, or on-demand scans. The Defender for Endpoint EDR component can still operate, but that is not equivalent to having Defender Antivirus actively prevent malware.
Inventory the primary antivirus on every endpoint, confirm the passive-mode state in the management console, and document which product owns real-time protection, exclusions, quarantine, and updates. Do not assume that an EDR sensor restores every prevention feature removed by passive mode.

EDR in block mode
Microsoft’s EDR-in-block-mode documentation describes a separate capability that can remediate malicious artifacts detected by EDR after a primary non-Microsoft antivirus misses them. It requires Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 and has limitations compared with running Microsoft Defender Antivirus as the active primary antivirus. Microsoft recommends disabling EDR in block mode when Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the primary antivirus.
Check the exact plan, operating-system support, licensing, and configuration prerequisites before enabling it. Record the decision in your endpoint standard so a later administrator does not unknowingly create overlapping controls.

Microsoft Defender for Business as an SMB example
Microsoft says Defender for Business is designed for small and medium-sized businesses with up to 300 users. It includes Defender Antivirus capabilities and extends them with cyberthreat and vulnerability management, attack-surface reduction, endpoint detection and response, and automated investigation and remediation.
That makes it an example of an SMB-sized product that combines preventive antivirus and EDR-related capabilities rather than requiring a separate enterprise deployment. The 300-user limit is a product-design boundary, not a risk threshold: a 20-person company may need EDR, while a 250-person company with low-risk systems may start with centrally managed antivirus. Confirm the current plan, supported platforms, identity integration, and administrative roles before purchase.

How to choose: a practical decision process
1. Map the assets and data
List laptops, desktops, servers, virtual machines, shared workstations, and devices used by contractors. Record operating system, owner, location, business role, internet exposure, and whether the device stores or accesses sensitive data. An unprotected server or forgotten laptop can undermine an otherwise strong deployment.
2. Define the incident you must be able to handle
Write down what you would need to do if ransomware appeared on a finance laptop, an administrator account was stolen, or a supplier delivered a malicious file. If the answer requires a timeline, cross-device search, rapid isolation, or proof of remediation, include EDR in the evaluation.
3. Assign alert ownership
Name the person who reviews alerts, the person authorized to isolate a device, and the person who makes business decisions during an outage. If those roles cannot be staffed internally, obtain MDR proposals before selecting an EDR license.
4. Compare integration and coverage
Check integration with your identity provider, email security, mobile-device management, ticketing system, backup platform, and existing Microsoft 365 or other management tools. Verify that the agent supports every operating system and server version you actually run, not merely the platforms shown in a marketing summary.

6. Pilot before broad rollout
Deploy to representative users and servers. Measure CPU and memory impact, application compatibility, alert quality, isolation and restoration procedures, network behavior, and administrator workload. Test exclusions carefully: a broad exclusion can remove the very protection you intended to buy.
Deployment checklist for either option
- Inventory all endpoints and remove unsupported or unmanaged devices from the blind spot.
- Enroll devices in a central console and require healthy reporting.
- Enable automatic engine and intelligence updates.
- Set real-time protection, cloud protection, tamper protection, and scan policies appropriate to the platform.
- Apply least privilege and MFA to administrator and remote-access accounts.
- Patch operating systems, browsers, VPN appliances, and business applications.
- Configure ransomware-resilient backups, including offline or otherwise protected copies, and test restoration.
- For EDR, define alert severity, escalation contacts, isolation authority, evidence retention, and a runbook for common incidents.
- Review coverage and unresolved alerts on a fixed schedule; do not let a silent console be mistaken for a clean environment.
- Run an exercise that starts with a simulated malicious file or compromised account and ends with recovery and lessons learned.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying EDR without monitoring
Problem: Alerts accumulate until they are stale, while staff assume the product is watching continuously.
Correction: Assign internal coverage with documented hours or contract MDR and test the escalation path.
Running overlapping antivirus products by default
Problem: One product enters passive mode, duplicate detections create confusion, or exclusions become excessive.
Correction: Choose one primary real-time antivirus, document the EDR role, and verify the resulting protection state on each platform.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Excluding business-critical folders too broadly
Problem: Attackers exploit exclusions intended to prevent performance issues.
Correction: Use the narrowest, vendor-documented exclusion, review it after application changes, and monitor the excluded path through other controls.
Ignoring servers and privileged devices
Problem: A protected laptop cannot compensate for an unmonitored file server, domain controller, or administrator workstation.
Correction: Include every asset that can execute code, store data, or issue privileged commands, and verify licensing and sensor support.
Assuming prevention means recovery is unnecessary
Problem: A business discovers that backups are incomplete or cannot be restored after an incident.
Correction: Test recovery, separate backup administration from ordinary user accounts, and rehearse communications and downtime decisions.
A sensible upgrade path for a growing company
A small company can start with centrally managed antivirus while it establishes asset inventory, patching, MFA, backups, and incident ownership. Reassess after a merger, move to cloud or remote work, acquisition of sensitive data, cyber-insurance requirement, ransomware event, or addition of privileged technical staff.
When the risk justifies EDR, deploy it first to administrators, finance, executives, servers, and other high-value systems, then expand to the remaining estate. A phased rollout should not become a permanent blind spot: set a deadline, track unenrolled devices, and retain the ability to isolate a pilot device before production expansion.
Bottom line for small-business buyers
Choose centrally managed antivirus when your immediate need is reliable baseline prevention and you can maintain the surrounding controls and review alerts. Choose EDR when you need behavioral detection, endpoint history, threat hunting, rapid containment, or defensible incident investigation. Choose managed EDR/MDR when you need those capabilities but have no staff to monitor and act on them.
CISA recommends centrally managed antivirus and EDR as part of ransomware defense. The practical decision is therefore not antivirus versus EDR in the abstract; it is which combination of prevention, visibility, response authority, and human monitoring your business can operate every day.
