Anti-icing hairs: how bouncing droplets could limit ice on power lines and turbines

A magnetically actuated forest of microscopic hairs can make water droplets bounce, travel sideways or break apart instead of remaining on a cold surface. By shortening the time liquid water touches the surface, the 2018 concept could reduce ice formation without relying solely on heaters, de-icing chemicals or mechanical scraping. It remains a laboratory demonstration, not a commercially deployed anti-icing product.

What the anti-icing hair array is

The technology is a hierarchical hair array described by Sang-Hyeon Lee, Minho Seong, Moon Kyu Kwak, Hyunwook Ko, Minsu Kang, Hyung Wook Park, Seong Min Kang and Hoon Eui Jeong in ACS Nano. The paper was published online on September 28, 2018, and appeared in volume 12, issue 11, on pages 10693–10702.

Each surface contains tapered hairs with roughness at more than one length scale. That combination helps water remain in a superhydrophobic, low-adhesion state even as the hairs change angle. An external magnetic field bends the array quickly and reversibly. The same surface can therefore be left upright, tilted to a chosen direction or bent far enough for its larger-scale texture to split droplets.

This is not simply a conventional water-repellent coating. The important feature is active control of the surface geometry. A fixed superhydrophobic coating can make droplets roll or bounce under suitable conditions, but it cannot deliberately change the direction or breakup behavior of a droplet after it lands. The hair array is designed to provide those different responses on demand.

How the three bouncing modes work

Upright hairs: quasi-pancake bouncing

With the hairs standing upright, an incoming droplet can undergo what the authors call quasi-pancake bouncing. The droplet briefly deforms against the textured surface and then springs away rather than settling into a puddle. “Quasi-pancake” describes the rapid, flattened shape during rebound; it does not mean the droplet becomes a dry film or disappears.

The tapered geometry and fine roughness limit the area that actually wets. Air pockets and low adhesion help the drop recover its shape. Because the liquid leaves in a short contact event, there is less time for heat to flow from the cold substrate into the droplet before it departs.

Tilted hairs: directional bouncing

Applying the magnetic field so the array leans gives the surface a preferred direction. A droplet then rebounds with a sideways component instead of leaving only normal to the surface. This directional mode is useful on sloped or vertical equipment because the surface can steer water toward an edge, a drain path or another area where accumulation is less harmful.

Direction is controlled by the orientation of the bent array, not by a chemical gradient in the water. Changing the external field can change the hair angle and therefore the preferred travel direction. The 2018 work demonstrates controllability, but it does not establish how precisely a full-size industrial panel could steer every drop under wind, vibration or uneven contamination.

Fully bent hairs: macrotexture-induced fragmentation

When the array is bent farther, its larger-scale texture can split an impacting droplet into smaller pieces. Fragmentation increases the number of daughter droplets and changes their momentum, making it harder for a single large volume of water to remain attached as a growing ice mass.

Fragmentation should not be confused with evaporation. The water is redistributed into smaller droplets, some of which can leave the surface. Whether every fragment sheds from a real installation would depend on gravity, airflow, surface orientation and the amount of ice already present.

Why bouncing can delay ice formation

Freezing is not instantaneous when a liquid drop reaches a cold surface. The drop needs time to transfer heat, establish a solid nucleus and grow an ice bond to the substrate. A rebound, a sideways departure or a breakup event interrupts that process. The central anti-icing idea is therefore kinetic: reduce contact time and the probability that a drop freezes in place.

The ACS Nano article presents the array as a way to limit ice formation and accumulation while avoiding exclusive dependence on Joule heating, chemical release or mechanical removal. Chemistry World reported that all three bouncing modes reduced droplet contact time compared with conventional superhydrophobic coatings. That comparison concerns the laboratory droplet behavior described at the time; it is not a field measurement of reduced ice mass on a power line or turbine.

Short contact time is most helpful for precipitation that arrives as discrete drops and can leave before freezing. It is less decisive once a continuous water film, frost layer or existing ice bridge has formed. A surface that repels individual drops may still need another strategy to deal with bonded ice, snow load or water supplied continuously by condensation.

What the magnetic control changes

The array responds immediately and reversibly to an external magnetic field. “Reversible” means the hairs can return to their prior configuration when the field is removed or changed; the demonstration is not a one-time shape-setting process. This gives the surface three operational states without replacing the material.

The multiscale roughness matters because bending changes the apparent slope and spacing seen by a droplet. A surface that stayed superhydrophobic only when perfectly upright would lose its benefit as soon as it moved. The tapered hairs and hierarchical texture are intended to preserve water repellency over those different angles.

The supporting information for the 2018 publication includes a video showing 1,200 repetitive structural-actuation cycles. That is evidence that the laboratory structure survived repeated demonstrations of bending. It is not a service-life rating for years of outdoor operation, nor does it specify performance after ultraviolet exposure, pollution, icing, abrasion or temperature cycling.

Where the concept could be used

Lead researcher Hoon Eui Jeong identified energy facilities as the main target. The named examples were powerlines, solar-cell surfaces and windmills. Chemistry World also mentioned roads and buildings as possible iced structures. Each application presents a different reason to remove water quickly.

Power lines

Ice on conductors and hardware adds weight and changes aerodynamic loading. A controllable, low-adhesion surface could in principle make incoming droplets leave before they build a bonded layer. The practical design challenge is coverage: a transmission system includes long conductors, joints, insulators and fittings with different curvatures. A magnetic actuator and its control system would have to work across those shapes without interfering with electrical clearances or creating a new maintenance burden.

Solar panels

Ice and frozen droplets block light and add mass to a panel. Directional bouncing could move water toward an edge rather than allowing drops to remain on the photovoltaic face. Any implementation would need to preserve optical transmission, electrical insulation and panel cleaning behavior. The 2018 demonstration does not report energy yield, field icing rates or a commercial panel integration.

Wind turbines

Blade icing changes the blade profile and can reduce aerodynamic performance. A hair array could be considered for selected blade regions or other exposed surfaces, but turbine blades flex, rotate and experience strong airflow. The laboratory modes were demonstrated on a controlled sample, so resistance to centrifugal forces, rain impact, sand, insects and leading-edge erosion remains an open engineering question.

Roads and buildings

Roads, roofs and building surfaces have large areas and varied slopes. Directional shedding might help move liquid toward drainage paths, but traffic, footfall, dust, snow and structural movement would test the hairs in ways not represented by the reported cycles. These uses would also require a practical method to generate and distribute the magnetic field over a large area.

How it compares with established anti-icing approaches

The concept is best understood as a different physical strategy, not as a demonstrated replacement for every existing method. The main comparison points are energy, chemistry, contact time, orientation, control and durability.

Approach Energy demand Chemical or corrosion issue Droplet contact behavior Orientation and control Evidence and durability
Magnetically actuated hair array The 2018 sources do not quantify operating energy. An external magnetic field is required to change the hair position. No de-icing chemical is released by the demonstrated mechanism. Rebound, directional bounce or fragmentation can shorten contact time. Hair angle and mode are actively controllable; the array is intended to work at multiple tilt angles. Laboratory demonstration; 1,200 repetitive actuation cycles are shown in supporting material. Outdoor life is not established.
Joule heating Requires electrical energy to warm the surface, with demand depending on area, insulation and weather. No chemical release, but wiring, power electronics and thermal cycling add system requirements. Can melt or prevent ice, but does not inherently make an unheated drop leave quickly. Heating zones can be controlled, although uniform heat on large or moving structures is difficult. Widely used in some applications, but operating cost and available power can be limiting.
Chemical de-icing Usually does not need continuous electrical heating. Chemistry World notes potential surface damage and corrosion from chemical release. Can depress the freezing point or loosen ice, but performance depends on concentration and replenishment. Application is controllable by coverage, not by changing surface geometry during a storm. Requires storage, handling and reapplication; environmental compatibility varies by chemical.
Mechanical removal May require machinery or labor rather than continuous heat. No necessary chemical release, but scraping or impact can damage a surface. Removes existing ice instead of preventing every droplet from freezing. Works where tools can reach, with limited access on energized lines or rotating blades. Effectiveness depends on access, timing and the strength of the ice bond.

The hair array’s distinctive advantage is the ability to alter droplet motion rather than simply add heat or weaken ice chemically. Its distinctive uncertainty is that the same moving, textured structure must remain clean, mechanically sound and water-repellent outdoors.

Important limitations and unresolved conditions

Condensation and frost

Sushant Anand of the University of Illinois Chicago cautioned that these materials perform well at room temperature but may not work as well at higher temperatures, with condensation or with frost. That warning addresses a fundamental difference between rain and atmospheric moisture. Condensation can create many tiny nuclei that grow in place, while frost can form directly from vapor without a large liquid drop that has time to bounce.

Existing ice and continuous water films

The reported mechanism targets droplets arriving on a surface. Once a connected ice layer anchors the hairs, the array may no longer be able to move freely or maintain the designed roughness. Likewise, a stream, fog bank or melting snowpack can supply water faster than individual drops can depart. The cited sources do not establish a threshold for these conditions.

Temperature range and outdoor exposure

No standalone field-performance percentage, service-life figure or commercial deployment statistic is reported. The sources also leave ultraviolet aging, pollution, salt, abrasion, wind-driven rain, repeated freeze-thaw cycles and large-scale manufacturing unresolved. Those factors determine whether a laboratory texture can be made economically and kept superhydrophobic for the life of infrastructure.

Magnetic-field integration

A real installation would need magnets or electromagnets, a way to position the field, and controls that do not disrupt nearby electrical equipment. The 2018 article demonstrates actuation of the array; it does not provide a complete power budget, controller design or installation standard for a transmission line, photovoltaic module or turbine blade.

What would be needed for a practical deployment

  1. Define the icing scenario. Measure whether the site mainly receives rain, freezing rain, fog, condensation, frost or wet snow. A droplet-bounce solution is most directly aligned with discrete liquid drops.
  2. Choose the shedding mode. Upright hairs suit normal rebound, a controlled tilt can direct water, and deeper bending can fragment larger drops. The choice should match the surface slope and the available drainage path.
  3. Design the magnetic actuator. Specify field strength, coverage, switching speed, electrical isolation and fail-safe behavior. The published demonstration does not supply a universal actuator specification.
  4. Protect the texture. Test contamination, abrasion, ultraviolet exposure, salt and freeze-thaw cycling while checking that the hairs still bend and that water remains in the low-adhesion state.
  5. Measure field outcomes. A credible trial would record contact time, ice mass, power or chemical use, maintenance and failure modes against the existing anti-icing method on the same equipment.

What polar bear fur adds to the biological context

A later Science Advances study of polar bear fur offers a useful biomimetic comparison. It links anti-icing behavior to wetting and sebum-related surface properties and notes that delaying freezing can give liquid water time to shed. That supports the general principle that freezing delay matters, but it does not show that the magnetic hair array copies polar bear fur or uses the same chemistry. The engineered array relies on active magnetic bending and hierarchical synthetic texture.

Bottom line on the 2018 technology

Anti-icing hairs bounce water by combining a magnetically reconfigurable structure with tapered, multiscale-roughness hairs that stay superhydrophobic as they bend. Upright hairs produce quasi-pancake rebounds, a tilted array sends droplets in a preferred direction, and a fully bent macrotexture can fragment them. Those responses reduce the time liquid water remains on a cold surface, which could lower the chance of droplets freezing in place.

The strongest evidence is a laboratory demonstration published in 2018, including repeated actuation over 1,200 cycles. Proposed targets include powerlines, solar-cell surfaces and wind turbines, but outdoor durability, condensation and frost performance, manufacturing scale, operating economics and commercial deployment were not established. The technology is therefore a promising anti-icing surface-engineering concept, not proof that existing infrastructure can yet be protected by magnetic hairs alone.
