Anthropic’s Life Sciences Verification Program: Eligibility, Grants and Monitoring

Anthropic’s Life Sciences Verification Program gives vetted life-science organizations expanded Claude access under defined grants, with continuing safeguards and offline monitoring.

Anthropic’s Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP) is a beta access program for verified life-science teams and institutions. It offers broader biology-related use of Claude under two grant types—Standard Use for routine team work and High-risk Use for a specifically reviewed project—while keeping safeguards and activity monitoring in place. Anthropic announced it on September 17, 2026.

Who can apply?

LSVP is intended for life-science teams and institutions, including academic labs, startups and pharmaceutical companies. Anthropic reviews applicants’ research credentials, security standards and ethical research oversight; it is not an automatic setting available to every Claude user. Anthropic said that dozens of organizations had joined through early access when broader applications opened, but did not publish an exact enrollment total. Anthropic’s announcement describes the program and application process.

What are the grant types?

The grant determines the approved scope of work, its review requirements and renewal schedule. High-risk Use is an additional grant, not a way to bypass other safeguards.

Grant Intended scope Vetting Renewal Models named at launch
Standard Use Broad, day-to-day team workloads for most life-science work Standard program review Annually Mythos 5.1, Opus 5 and Sonnet 5
High-risk Use One specific research project whose work is blocked under Standard Use Additional vetting Every six months Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 were available; Mythos High-risk grants were limited to a small set of entities and required additional vetting

The model names and access details in the table describe the September 17, 2026 launch announcement, not a guarantee of current availability. Anthropic said it intended future models to be included in Standard Use as they launched. Check the current program terms before applying.

How does monitoring work?

Organizations identify their intended use cases in the application, and access is tied to those approved uses. Anthropic says it monitors activity for patterns outside the stated scope and may flag cases to organization administrators for action. For LSVP traffic, safeguards shift from real-time blocking toward offline monitoring of patterns across requests and sessions. Other protections, including cyber classifiers, remain in place.

Anthropic says data associated with flagged LSVP activity is retained for 30 days to support this monitoring. The company states that the data is compartmentalized, is not used to train models and cannot be accessed by members of its life-sciences research teams. These are Anthropic’s stated controls in its program announcement.

Where was LSVP available at launch?

At launch, the beta covered API use through Anthropic’s first-party console and Claude for Enterprise and Team plans. It was not available on individual plans or third-party platforms. Anthropic also said BAA-enabled organizations could not use the beta; organizations with protected health information (PHI) were directed to use separate, non-BAA organizations without HIPAA coverage. In Claude.ai and Claude Code, the default grant initially applied, except in Claude Code when using API authentication. These availability details are launch-era terms and may change.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

Anthropic describes an access and oversight program, not evidence that use of LSVP improves research outcomes. Its announcement gives no exact enrollment count beyond “dozens” of early-access organizations and publishes no efficacy statistic or measured research outcome. The program’s practical fit therefore depends on an organization’s approved use case, eligibility review and current access terms.
