Claude Code mods are JavaScript or TypeScript extensions that can change how a Claude Code session behaves and appears. Anthropic announced them on October 1, 2026, for the CLI and desktop app, describing uses such as rewriting prompts, intervening in tool calls, handling permission requests, and adding or replacing interface features. They are more powerful than ordinary settings or hooks—and Anthropic warns that mods are not sandboxed and should be installed only from trusted sources.
What Claude Code mods do
A mod is packaged inside a Claude Code plugin and uses functions that respond to events in a session. Depending on what its code does, it may observe an event, change its data before it continues, or handle the event itself. Anthropic says mods can persist during a session and retain state, enabling behavior that spans individual interactions. The launch announcement describes mods as available in both Claude Code’s CLI and desktop app (Anthropic’s announcement).

- Change prompts: rewrite a prompt before it reaches Claude.
- Intervene in tool calls: block, rewrite, or retry a call, or redact secrets from tool output before Claude reads it.
- Handle permissions: respond to permission requests, subject to the mod’s behavior and applicable managed controls.
- Change the interface: add UI elements or replace existing functionality.
These are capabilities, not assurances that a particular mod is useful, correct, or secure.

How mods differ from settings and hooks
Settings adjust supported configuration; they do not give users the same ability to intervene in session events or draw new UI. Anthropic says existing hooks offered some control, but could not rewrite events, render new UI, or replace features. Mods are intended for those broader customizations.

What you need to get started
Anthropic’s October 1, 2026 guide lists Claude Code version 2.1.287 or later and says mods are enabled by default. Because the API may change between releases, the guide says to treat the generated type declarations in the local plugin as authoritative for the installed version (Claude Code mods guide).
A plugin can contain a .claude-plugin/plugin.json manifest, a hooks/hooks.json configuration file, and a JavaScript or TypeScript module that exports register(on, options). The guide explains how those pieces connect and documents event handling. It also says you can ask Claude Code to write, install, and hot reload a mod. Generated code still needs review: hot reloading makes iteration easier, not the code inherently trustworthy.

Examples of what a mod could change
Token Weather: a context-window display
Addy Osmani’s guide walks through Token Weather, an approximately 80-line example that displays context-window use above the prompt. Its illustrated states show “Clear” at 18%, “Showers” at 67%, and “Storm” at 81% of an example 200,000-token window. These are demo readings, not research results, benchmarks, or typical usage figures (Anthropic’s guide).

Replacing a built-in feature
Anthropic says /diff now ships as a mod, so it can be disabled or replaced. The company says it plans to move more built-in features to mods over time; that is a stated plan, not a promise about which features will change or when (Anthropic’s announcement).
Are Claude Code mods safe to install?
Anthropic’s warning is direct: “Mods run with the same access to your machine as Claude Code itself. They aren’t sandboxed, and you should only install mods from sources you trust, the same way you’d install any code on your computer.” Treat a mod as executable code, not as a harmless visual theme. Review its source and consider what its event handlers can observe, change, or trigger before installing it.

There is a technical distinction in Anthropic’s own materials: the launch announcement emphasizes machine access and the lack of sandboxing, while the getting-started guide describes a module running in its own sandbox without DOM or Node, with outside operations routed through the $ API. That architecture description should not be read as overriding the announcement’s trust warning or as a guarantee against malicious or faulty code.
What managed safeguards do—and do not do
Anthropic says a built-in sec-default mod loads first on Team and Enterprise plans and on machines with managed settings. It blocks user-installed mods from certain risky actions, including overriding permission-deny rules. Administrators can put their own mods first, but Anthropic says they should include sec-default in that list to retain its restrictions. These controls are limited safeguards, not a comprehensive security boundary or guarantee that a mod is safe (Anthropic’s announcement).

What the launch evidence establishes
Anthropic creator Boris Cherny’s rationale, as reported by The New Stack on October 2, 2026, was: “Each person works differently, so there’s no reason why everyone should have an identical Claude experience.” The feature’s promise is flexibility: developers can tailor Claude Code’s prompts, event handling, interface, and selected built-in behavior rather than waiting for every customization to come from Anthropic.
The launch announcement and guide provide examples and implementation details, but no independent statistics on adoption, productivity gains, or security effectiveness. Anthropic staff member Addy Osmani put the aim this way in the guide: “That makes mods a way to fit Claude Code to how you work.” Whether that flexibility is worth the added code-review and trust responsibility depends on the mod and the environment where it will run.
