Anthropic made Claude for Government generally available to federal and state agencies on September 30, 2026. The service is described by Anthropic as running in a FedRAMP High-authorized environment, with prepaid usage and administrative spending controls. Agencies still need to match the specific service and hosting environment to their data, authorization and procurement requirements.
What is Claude for Government?
Claude for Government is Anthropic’s government offering for federal and state agencies. It moved from public beta, which began in July 2026, to general availability on September 30, 2026. Anthropic says the service provides capabilities comparable to those available to commercial customers and generally follows the commercial release cadence. These are company descriptions, not independent evaluations. Anthropic’s launch announcement describes work with desktop files and the use of skills, plugins and projects for tasks such as drafting memos, reviewing requests for proposals and supporting casework.

Anthropic also described Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365 as rolling out in early access through the same environment and administrative controls. They were not announced as generally available alongside the core service. The company positions Claude Code as a way for public-sector teams to build and modernize software used to support public services.
Which government agencies can use Claude?
Anthropic announced general availability for federal and state agencies. It also describes a California procurement route through which eligible state entities and local governments, including cities and counties, may access the offering. Eligibility for that route is determined by the California Department of Technology, so a local government should verify its status and the current agreement terms rather than assume it qualifies.

In California, the Department of Technology says the statewide agreement is intended to help public employees use AI tools, not replace them. California’s Department of Technology and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services report using Claude-related tools in cybersecurity work, including scanning, triage and patching state software. The DMV reports using Claude to improve customer service and reduce waits, while the Department of Health Care Services describes internal workflows supporting Medicaid administration. These are government-reported uses and aims; they do not establish independently measured improvements or prove that Claude caused a reduction in wait times.
Is Claude for Government FedRAMP High authorized?
Anthropic identifies the Claude for Government service environment as FedRAMP High authorized and says it can process Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and FIPS 199 High Impact data. The authorization applies to the cloud service environment, not to a Claude model as a standalone product: Anthropic explains that models are software components deployed within authorized environments. An agency remains responsible for assessing whether a particular service and deployment meet its own requirements. See Anthropic’s government product page for the company’s distinctions among its offerings.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Do not treat every way of accessing Claude as having the same authorization. Anthropic says Claude Enterprise and the Anthropic Claude API are not FedRAMP authorized. Buying Enterprise or the API through AWS Marketplace does not change that status.
How the named hosting options differ
| Option | Authorization or use described by Anthropic | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Government | FedRAMP High-authorized service environment | Anthropic says it is not an IL5 environment. |
| Claude through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud | Identified by Anthropic as a FedRAMP High option; the page says it supports DoD IL4/IL5 workloads | For ITAR-controlled data, Anthropic points agencies to Bedrock in AWS GovCloud. |
| Claude through Google Cloud Vertex AI with Assured Workloads | Identified by Anthropic as a FedRAMP High option | Anthropic says Vertex AI is not an IL5 environment. |
| Claude Enterprise or Anthropic Claude API | Not FedRAMP authorized, according to Anthropic | A marketplace purchase does not confer FedRAMP authorization. |
Anthropic also describes a HIPAA-ready Enterprise/API configuration and says a business associate agreement may be available for many state and local agencies handling protected health information or personally identifiable information. That is not a blanket authorization: agencies should verify the particular configuration and their own legal and compliance obligations. The government product page says Claude for Government runs on Palantir’s FedStart platform and appears in the FedRAMP Marketplace under “Palantir Federal Cloud Service – Supporting Services.”

What controls and cost limits does the government service include?
Anthropic says Claude for Government has no seat fee. Agencies instead purchase prepaid usage in fixed increments, with a hard not-to-exceed cap: spending cannot exceed the obligated balance. This is not free or unlimited access, and Anthropic directs agencies to contact sales for pricing.
Anthropic describes several controls for administrators, including user tiers, model and spending limits, usage visibility, departmental allocations and low-balance alerts. Agencies can connect identity providers for sign-on; the service also supports SCIM group mappings and layered configuration. Usage exports provide metering data, while administrators can review audit logs. Anthropic says conversation history remains on the agency-managed device and sensitive operations on its side require two-person approval. These are product claims from Anthropic, not independent audit findings.

Do not substitute the commercial Enterprise terms on Anthropic’s product page for government pricing. The government offering’s prepaid usage structure is separate, and its exact price is not stated publicly on the page.
How can a government agency procure Claude?
Anthropic describes direct purchasing and purchasing through Carahsoft. Carahsoft also distributes the offering through the GSA Multiple Award Schedule and cooperative contracts. Agencies considering cloud-hosted Claude through Bedrock or Vertex AI should account for provider billing; Anthropic directs buyers to their AWS or Google Cloud account teams for those options.

California’s SITeS route
Anthropic lists California agreement STP-GENAI-26-ANTHROPIC through its Statewide Information Technology Services (SITeS) program as a purchasing route for eligible state entities and local governments. Eligibility determinations are administered by the California Department of Technology. Check the current contract and eligibility before relying on this route.
California’s Department of Technology says the statewide agreement offers state departments a 50% discount and gives cities and counties access to the same pricing, along with free workforce training, technical assistance and implementation support from Anthropic. The Governor’s Office separately described a 50% discounted price per seat. Because those descriptions differ, they should not be read as proof that every product, usage charge or contract item is uniformly half price; the agreement itself governs the precise terms. The state’s announcements are available from the California Department of Technology and the California Governor’s Office.
What should an agency compare before choosing an option?
- Data classification and authorization: Identify the data the system will handle, then confirm that the exact service and hosting environment meet the relevant authorization requirements.
- Hosting and agency control: Establish who administers identity, configuration, logs and usage visibility, and whether the agency’s control requirements are met.
- Feature availability: Distinguish generally available Claude for Government features from Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365, which Anthropic described as early access.
- Procurement eligibility: Compare direct purchase, Carahsoft and any applicable contract route; California entities should confirm SITeS eligibility and terms.
- Total cost structure: Account for prepaid usage and caps for Claude for Government, or cloud-provider billing for Bedrock and Vertex AI, as well as any contract-specific training or support.
California’s reported deployments illustrate possible uses, but the reviewed government announcements do not provide independently published measurements of productivity gains, service improvements or reduced wait times. Agencies should evaluate outcomes in their own workflows rather than treating intended benefits as proven results.
