A higher wattage generally allows a given amount of water to heat faster than a lower-wattage kettle under comparable conditions, but wattage alone cannot establish a boil time. For a rough electricity calculation, the rating is the maximum electrical power while heating. A 2,000 W appliance operating for 0.1 hour would use 0.2 kWh, but an actual cycle may run for a different duration and the rating range is not a test result. Your electricity tariff and the volume boiled determine the cost. The most reliable way to reduce consumption is to heat only the water you need.
