Animal Crossing: New Horizons has three multiplayer setups: same-console play on one shared island, local wireless play between nearby Switch systems, and online play over the internet. The right setup depends on how many consoles and game copies you have, whether everyone can share one island, and whether the session is online. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition session has a separate 12-player option when every participant owns that edition.
Animal Crossing multiplayer modes at a glance
Use this comparison to choose a mode before inviting anyone. “Game copy” means a copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons for each participating system, not merely one copy owned by the group.

One Switch: four people on one shared island
What this mode provides
One console contains one island. Up to eight user profiles can live on that island, but only four residents can play simultaneously on that Switch. This is the only setup that lets a group use a single console and a single game copy at the same time.
Because the players are residents of one island, progress and island development belong to that shared island rather than to separate visitor islands. Decide which profiles will live there before starting: adding another resident later is possible, but the island remains tied to the original console.

What you need
- One Nintendo Switch system with Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
- At least two user profiles living on the console’s island; the multiplayer phone option does not appear for a solo island.
- One usable controller for every person playing at the same time. Nintendo lists individual Joy-Con options and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller support; extra accessories may be required depending on the controllers you own.
How to start same-console play
- Have each participant create or select a Nintendo Switch user profile and move that profile onto the island. The console supports up to eight resident profiles.
- Launch the game with the residents who want to play available on the island.
- Open the NookPhone and select Call Resident. This option appears once at least two players live on the island.
- Select the residents to invite, then assign a controller to each selected player when prompted.
- Confirm the controller assignments and begin the shared-island session. If a fourth person joins, the console must still have a separate working controller for that player.
No airport, internet connection, Nintendo Account, or Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for this same-console mode. The practical limit is four active players even if more than four profiles live on the island.
Local wireless: separate Switch systems in the same place
When to use it
Local wireless is for players who are physically near one another but want each person to use a separate Switch and a separate island. Nintendo’s requirement is one system and one game for every player. Up to eight players can join the same local-wireless session.
Prerequisite: open the Airport
The Airport becomes available after the second day of in-game play. The host cannot invite local visitors until that facility is open, so a brand-new island may need two in-game days before this option appears.

Host instructions
- Enter the Airport and speak with the airport attendant.
- Choose I want visitors.
- Select Via local play.
- Keep the gate open while the other players connect. If you want to limit access, create a four-digit Dodo Code and give it only to the intended visitors.
Visitor instructions
- Go to the Airport on the visiting Switch.
- Choose I wanna fly!.
- Select Via local play.
- Choose the host’s island from the available local session, or enter the host’s four-digit Dodo Code when prompted.
Every player remains on their own console and uses that console’s controller. Local wireless does not use the internet and does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it cannot be reduced to one shared game card or one shared system: each participant needs both a system and a game.
Online play: visiting friends over the internet
Requirements before anyone connects
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play.
- A Nintendo Account associated with the participating Switch user.
- Internet access for every console.
- Current game software on each system.
- One Switch and one game copy for each player.
These requirements apply even when players are using the same game version on different islands. A Nintendo Account by itself is not a substitute for Nintendo Switch Online, and a membership does not remove the need for a game copy on each participating console.

Host instructions
- Visit the Airport after it has opened on your island.
- Tell the attendant I want visitors.
- Choose the online-play option.
- Invite your friends through the available friend list, or create a five-digit Dodo Code for a direct invitation.
- Share the code only with the people you want to admit, then leave the gate open while they arrive.
Visitor instructions
- Go to the Airport and select I wanna fly!.
- Choose Via online play.
- Search for a friend whose gate is open, or select the Dodo Code option and enter the host’s five-digit code.
- Confirm the destination and travel when the game displays the host’s island.
Ordinary online sessions support up to eight simultaneous players. The host’s gate and Dodo Code control entry, but they do not increase that standard session limit.
What changes with the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo documents a larger online session for Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Up to 12 people can play together online only when every participant owns and is running that edition. This is an all-or-nothing condition for the session: if even one participant is using the regular version, plan around the regular online limit rather than the 12-player option.
The Switch 2 Edition does not change the same-console four-player arrangement or the local-wireless requirement for a system and game per player. It matters specifically when you are organizing an online group that needs more than the standard eight-player capacity.
Controller planning for same-console groups
Count controllers, not just consoles
For one-console play, the game needs a usable controller assigned to every active resident. A single controller cannot cover four simultaneous players. Nintendo’s supported choices include individual Joy-Con configurations and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers, so check the physical controllers available before inviting a group.
Additional accessories may be required when your preferred Joy-Con arrangement needs a grip, charging equipment, or another way to hold each controller comfortably. Those accessory needs depend on the hardware combination you already own; the game itself does not supply extra controllers.

Separate-console sessions
In local wireless and online modes, each participant plays on their own Switch, so each console needs its own controller and game copy. Extra controllers are useful only if more than one person will play on the same console; they do not replace the per-player system-and-game requirement for separate-console sessions.

| Your situation | Use this mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several people are in one room and have only one Switch | Same-console local play | One system and one game support up to four active residents on one island. |
| Players are nearby, each with a Switch, but nobody wants to use internet service | Local wireless | Systems connect directly at close range; each player brings a system and game. |
| Players are in different homes or locations | Standard online play | Internet access and Nintendo Switch Online allow friends to visit remotely. |
| A group of nine to 12 people wants one online session | Online with Switch 2 Edition | The 12-player option applies only when every participant has that edition. |
The decisive question is whether players share one console. If they do, you are organizing residents on one island and need controllers. If they do not, every participant needs a complete system-and-game setup, with Nintendo Switch Online added for internet sessions.

“Call Resident” is missing
Check that at least two user profiles live on the island. The option appears only after another resident has been added. Also confirm that you are playing on the console containing those resident profiles; residents on a different Switch cannot be called into the current island.
The Airport has no multiplayer choices
Local and online travel require the Airport to be open. It opens after the second day of in-game play, so continue the island’s early progression until the facility becomes available.
An online friend cannot visit
Verify all four online prerequisites: an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a linked Nintendo Account, internet access, and current game software. Then have the host reopen the gate and confirm whether the visitor should search the friend list or enter the current five-digit Dodo Code. A code from an earlier session may no longer be valid after the gate is closed or reopened.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
A local visitor cannot find the island
Make sure both players selected the local-play path at the Airport rather than the online path. The systems must be nearby, and the host must still have the gate open. If the host enabled a four-digit Dodo Code, the visitor must enter that exact code.
The group cannot add another player
Check the mode’s capacity before changing hardware. Same-console play stops at four active players; ordinary local-wireless and online sessions stop at eight. A 12-player online session is available only when every participant uses the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Adding another controller or generating a new Dodo Code cannot raise a mode’s player limit.
Practical examples
Family sharing one living-room Switch
Create resident profiles for the family members who will use the island, make sure each has a controller, and start the session through Call Resident. This arrangement is simple and requires no paid online service, but all active players share the same island and the console cannot host a fifth simultaneous resident.
Two friends with separate Switch systems at the same house
Once both islands have an open Airport, use local wireless. Each friend brings a Switch and a game copy, and the host can protect the gate with the four-digit local Dodo Code. Internet service and Nintendo Switch Online are unnecessary for this setup.

A group spread across different cities
Use online play. Every participant needs a Switch, a game copy, internet access, a Nintendo Account, current software, and Nintendo Switch Online. The host opens the gate and sends either a friend invitation or the five-digit Dodo Code.
A club planning a session larger than eight people
Confirm edition ownership before scheduling. The 12-player online capacity is available only if every participant owns the Switch 2 Edition; a mixed group must use the regular session limit.
Quick Recap
Pre-session checklist
- Choose between shared-island play and separate-console play.
- For one-console play, count one working controller per active resident.
- For local wireless or online play, count one Switch and one game copy per participant.
- Confirm that the host’s Airport is open; this requires reaching the second in-game day.
- For online play, verify Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo Accounts, internet access, and updated software on every system.
- Use a four-digit code for a local-wireless gate or a five-digit code for an online gate when you need to restrict invitations.
- If planning 9–12 online players, verify Switch 2 Edition ownership for everyone before the session starts.
