It uses HTML together with Angular syntax to display component data, respond to user actions, and describe dynamic interface content.
How Angular templates work
A component’s template describes the DOM that Angular renders for that component. Interpolation and bindings connect the template to component data, while event listeners connect user interaction to component behavior. Together, these features let the view reflect data and react to what a user does.

Angular processes templates by compiling them into JavaScript. Its compiler builds an internal understanding of the application and applies rendering optimizations. The template is therefore not simply copied as ordinary HTML into the page.

Angular supports two ways to define a component’s template. Use an inline template for short markup that is convenient to keep beside the component metadata; use an external HTML file when separating markup from the component is clearer for the project.
#1 Best Overall
| Form | How it is declared | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Inline | The component metadata contains a template. |
Keep a short view close to its component. |
| External | The component metadata references an HTML file with templateUrl. |
Keep markup in a separate file. |
These are organizational choices; the Angular guide confirms both forms but does not establish a performance advantage for either.
Core template syntax
Interpolation displays values
Use double curly braces to display the result of an expression as text: {{ expression }}. Angular evaluates the expression and places its result in the rendered view, allowing displayed text to reflect component data.

Bindings connect values to elements
Square brackets bind a value to a DOM property. For example, [disabled]="isSaving" binds the property to the value of isSaving. Use the attr. form when binding an HTML attribute rather than a DOM property.

Parentheses add an event listener. For example, (click)="save()" connects a click to a component behavior. The binding notation is Angular syntax, not ordinary HTML attribute syntax.

Other template features
Angular templates also support control flow, variables, pipes, content projection, and deferred loading. These features help express conditional or repeated content, transform displayed values, pass content into components, and load content later. Each has its own syntax and role; they build on the same idea of describing a component’s view in the template.
How Angular template syntax differs from HTML
Most HTML syntax is usable in Angular templates, but Angular gives special meaning to certain characters. Square brackets and parentheses indicate bindings, and @ introduces features such as control flow. To display a literal at sign in template text, Angular’s guide gives @ and @ as alternatives.

- Angular does not support
<script>elements in templates. - Source comments are not included in rendered output.
- Self-closing component or directive elements are allowed.
- Unnecessary whitespace is ignored or collapsed.
- Angular may add comment placeholders for dynamic content.
What ng-template does
An ng-template declares a fragment that can be rendered later, dynamically or programmatically. The fragment is not rendered just because it appears in a component template. Angular needs a reference to the fragment and a mechanism that instructs it to render the content.
This makes ng-template different from ordinary visible markup: it defines content for later use rather than displaying that content immediately.
