On the web, it works alongside JavaScript and browser APIs—not instead of them. It can help bring existing code into a web app or handle selected workloads, but it is not automatically faster than JavaScript or able to access a computer’s resources without permission from its host environment.
What is WebAssembly?
WebAssembly, usually shortened to Wasm, is a low-level format for code that can be efficiently represented and executed by a compatible runtime. It is not a programming language in the usual sense and is not a single product. Developers write programs in languages such as C, C++, C#, or Rust, then use a compiler and toolchain to produce Wasm modules.

The format defines instructions, binary encoding, validation, and execution semantics. The W3C WebAssembly Working Group’s Core Specification 3.0 is identified as a Candidate Recommendation Draft dated September 11, 2026. That is a draft standards status, not a claim that every runtime already implements every part of that version.

How does WebAssembly work on the web?
A web app can load a Wasm module through the WebAssembly JavaScript interface. JavaScript can communicate with the module, while the surrounding app continues to use JavaScript and browser APIs for user interaction and web-platform features. In practical terms, Wasm adds another way to run code within a web app; it does not replace the browser platform.
#1 Best Overall
The module’s available capabilities depend on how the host runtime connects it to the environment. A browser module does not gain unrestricted access to files, networks, clocks, or devices just because it is Wasm. The web-facing API and its draft status are described in the W3C WebAssembly Web API document, a Candidate Recommendation Draft dated October 3, 2026.
Is WebAssembly a replacement for JavaScript?
No. In browser applications, Wasm and JavaScript can work together. Wasm may be suitable for a compiled component or codebase that a team wants to reuse, while JavaScript and browser APIs handle the rest of the app and its interaction with the web platform. Which parts belong in Wasm depends on the project’s workload and integration needs.

Wasm is also not limited to browsers. It is a virtual instruction set architecture; outside a browser, a runtime or interface such as WASI can connect modules to host capabilities. Different embeddings expose different interfaces, so there is no single, universal set of resources available to every Wasm program. The WebAssembly overview and specifications index introduce the broader platform and its standards.
What is WebAssembly used for?
WebAssembly.org describes its use-case list as incomplete and unordered. The examples below are possible applications, not a guarantee that Wasm improves performance or simplifies development in each one.

- Creative and media software: image and video editing, music applications, and games.
- Compute-heavy or specialized work: image recognition, scientific visualization, and simulation.
- Existing code and runtimes: reusing code inside a JavaScript and HTML app, or running interpreters and virtual machines.
- Non-browser settings: server-side compute and applications, game distribution, and hybrid mobile apps.
The official WebAssembly use cases page gives further examples. Whether a particular project is a good fit depends on what it needs from its runtime and how much work it takes to connect the module to the rest of the application.
Will WebAssembly make an application faster?
Not necessarily. Performance depends on the workload, the runtime, and the communication between the module and the rest of the application. Wasm can be useful for selected tasks, but the available evidence here does not establish a benchmark for a particular program or show that Wasm is universally faster than JavaScript. Treat performance as something to measure for your own task, not a property to assume from the format alone.
When assessing a project, consider the target runtime, the capabilities the code needs, the workload’s performance requirements, and the effort of integrating the module with JavaScript or existing code. A project that depends heavily on browser features may still rely on host APIs even if some of its code runs as Wasm.

Wasm’s design includes validation and sandboxing. The WebAssembly security documentation explains that modules run separately from the host and cannot escape the sandbox except through available APIs. The core standard also avoids ambient access to the execution environment: the embedding determines which capabilities are imported.

That boundary does not make every module or application automatically safe. Bugs in module logic, unsafe host APIs, or compromised code delivery can still create security problems. For browser modules, the W3C Web API draft describes a threat model essentially the same as JavaScript’s, including the need to protect code delivery and follow browser policies.
Can I use WebAssembly in my browser?
MDN reports that the WebAssembly JavaScript interface has been available across browsers since October 2017 and labels it widely available. That compatibility date applies to the interface’s baseline, not to every newer proposal or feature. Check current compatibility information and use feature detection if your app depends on a particular capability.
To get started, read MDN’s WebAssembly documentation for concepts, guides, examples, and API references. Then choose a toolchain suited to your source language and target runtime; C, C++, C#, and Rust are examples of languages that can target Wasm.
