Angular supports client-side rendering (CSR), build-time prerendering (SSG), and request-time server-side rendering (SSR). With hybrid rendering, you can assign a strategy to each route instead of forcing an entire application into one mode. Use CSR for browser-first interactive pages, prerender stable content that is known at build time, and SSR when the initial HTML needs fresh or user-specific data.
What are Angular rendering strategies?
A rendering strategy determines where and when Angular produces a page’s HTML. Angular’s official documentation says applications ship as client-side rendered by default. Its hybrid-rendering approach lets you choose a different mode for individual routes. Angular’s hybrid-rendering guide documents the available modes and configuration.

The choice affects when users and crawlers can see page content, how current that content is, whether it can vary by user, and what your build and hosting setup must support. SSR and prerendered pages also need hydration to connect the delivered HTML to the running browser application.

| Strategy | When and where HTML is rendered | Good fit | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSR | In the browser after the application’s JavaScript loads | Interactive internal tools, dashboards, real-time applications, or routes with little need for search indexing | Browser-oriented development and no server-side rendering work, but initial content waits for JavaScript to load and execute; crawlers may need to run it too. |
| SSG / prerendering | At build time, producing static HTML | Marketing pages, documentation, stable catalogs, and content shared across users | Static output can be served through a CDN, but required data must be available at build time. Updates need a rebuild, and many generated routes can increase build time or deployment size. |
| SSR | On the server for each initial request | Personalized or frequently changing content, such as dynamic product pages or feeds | Delivers populated initial HTML, but requires server-compatible code and request-time rendering capacity, which can add hosting work and cost. |
| Hybrid | A selected mode for each route | Applications whose routes have different freshness, personalization, or indexing needs | Requires route-level decisions and deployment support for the selected modes. |
When to use CSR
Choose CSR when the route’s main value is browser-side interaction and immediate search visibility or populated initial HTML is not a priority. A dashboard behind a sign-in, for example, may be a better candidate than a public product page.
#1 Best Overall
Because the browser must load and execute JavaScript before the Angular-rendered content appears, CSR can delay initial content visibility. Search crawlers may also need to execute the application to discover that content.
When to use SSG or prerendering
Prerender a route when its content can be determined during the build and is substantially the same for visitors. Documentation, marketing pages, and stable catalog pages are natural candidates. Generated HTML can be served as static files, without rendering every request on an application server.

Build-time output has a freshness boundary: changes are reflected when you rebuild and redeploy. For parameterized routes, Angular’s getPrerenderParams lets you choose which parameter values receive generated pages. A path not included in that set is not automatically a static file; the route’s configured fallback determines whether it is rendered on the server, rendered in the client, or has no Angular fallback. See the hybrid-rendering guide.
When to use SSR
Use SSR when the initial HTML must reflect request-time information, such as frequently changing content or personalization. The server renders the first response, so populated content can arrive before the browser application becomes interactive.
Rank #3
SSR also adds operational and implementation requirements: the app must work in a server environment, and the deployment must have capacity to render requests. Code or dependencies that assume browser-only APIs need particular care when routes may be rendered on the server.
How to configure hybrid rendering
Angular’s server route configuration assigns a rendering mode to each route using RenderMode.Client, RenderMode.Prerender, or RenderMode.Server. A wildcard route can serve as a catch-all when appropriate. The current guide documents adding SSR support through ng new --ssr or ng add @angular/ssr, as well as configuration for static output when you intend to serve generated files without an application server. Check the instructions for your Angular release in the hybrid-rendering guide, since the official documentation is a rolling guide rather than a release-pinned reference.

How hydration connects rendered HTML to the browser
SSR and prerendering provide HTML before the client application is interactive. Hydration lets Angular reuse the server-rendered DOM and restore application state or data where possible, connecting that output to the browser application. It is not a separate rendering mode; it is the step that makes rendered output work as an interactive Angular page.
Best Value
Keep server and browser markup consistent for the same route. If they produce different structures, hydration can encounter mismatches. Defer browser-only initialization to browser render hooks where suitable, and watch for third-party scripts that alter the DOM before Angular hydrates it. Angular explains these requirements in its hydration guide.
When incremental hydration helps
Incremental hydration can keep selected deferred sections in server-rendered form while postponing their client-side hydration until a trigger fires. It builds on SSR, hydration, deferrable views, and event replay; eligible events that happen before a section is hydrated can be queued and replayed.
The current incremental hydration guide documents provideClientHydration() as enabling incremental hydration by default and describes an opt-out API. Defaults and APIs can change, so verify this behavior for the Angular release used by your project.

Quick Recap
A practical route-selection rule
- Choose CSR when browser-side interaction matters most and the route does not depend on immediately available indexed content.
- Choose prerendering when content is stable, shared, and available during the build.
- Choose SSR when freshness or personalization must be reflected in the initial response.
- Choose hybrid rendering when those needs differ across routes, and configure each route accordingly.
