Use an HDMI cable marked for in-wall installation and appropriate to the route, guide it with a pull string, fish tape, or rods, and draw it through steadily without forcing the connector. Test picture and sound before covering the openings. Keep HDMI routing separate from mains power: never run an ordinary TV power cord inside a wall.
Plan the route before cutting
Choose where the cable will enter and exit, and identify the wall cavity between those points. Check for electrical wiring, plumbing, heating ducts, insulation, and other obstructions before making openings. The wall-fishing guide recommends inspecting the route first. If you cannot establish what is behind the wall or how the cavity is built, stop and ask a qualified professional rather than fishing blindly.

Keep the path as direct and accessible as practical. If the cable must pass through an air-handling or plenum space, the required cable marking may differ from a standard wall cavity; follow the applicable local rules and the cable’s listing.

Choose the cable for the wall and the signal
Use a cable whose jacket is marked for in-wall installation and whose rating is suitable for the route and local requirements. An ordinary cable intended for exposed connections is not automatically appropriate when concealed in a wall. In the US, vendor guidance describes CL2 and CL3 as in-wall fire-safety ratings, with CMP used for relevant plenum spaces; confirm the actual marking and applicable requirements rather than treating one rating as universally compliant. See the CL2 and CL3 explainer.

Choose the signal capability and cable technology separately from the jacket rating. Check the devices’ required HDMI format and the full route length; these sources do not establish a universal maximum length for every cable and signal. For example, StarTech specifies one particular 5 m CL3 cable for up to 4K x 2K at 30 Hz. Those are that product’s specifications, not a general guarantee for CL3 cables. What you need
- An in-wall-rated HDMI cable suited to the route and the devices’ signal requirements.
- A pull string if the conduit or route already has one; otherwise, fish tape or fiberglass/fish rods can help guide the line through a cavity.
- Conduit, if you want added protection and easier future replacement and the route can accommodate it.
- A helper, if available, to feed the cable at one end while another person draws the pull line.
These are conditional aids, not a required shopping list. The opening and any conduit must accommodate the HDMI connector unless the cable uses a detachable-head design. Conduit bends and connector clearance can make a route difficult, so check fit before pulling. The conduit installation guide discusses these considerations.

- CL3 in‑wall fire safety rating suitable for commercial settings.
Pull the HDMI cable through the wall
- Locate the endpoints and inspect the path. Confirm where the cable will enter and emerge, and check for wiring, plumbing, ducts, insulation, or other obstacles before opening the wall.
- Set up a pull line. Use an existing pull string where available. Otherwise, guide fish tape or rods between the openings and attach a pull string or cable as appropriate for the path.
- Secure the cable end. Attach the cable to the pull line so the connection is compact and unlikely to snag. A tapered wrap can help smooth the transition. Protect the HDMI plug; do not use it as a handle.
- Draw the cable steadily. Feed cable from the starting end while a helper draws the line, if possible. Keep bends gentle. Stop if the cable catches, the connector binds, or the cable begins to twist or crush; forcing it can damage the cable or connector.
- Leave slack and test. Leave usable slack at both openings, connect the actual devices, and test picture and sound before fitting finish plates or otherwise covering the openings.
Keep HDMI and wall power separate
HDMI is low-voltage signal cabling; that does not make it safe to place an ordinary television power cord inside a wall. Mains power requires an appropriate, code-compliant in-wall method. If you want a receptacle behind the TV or are unsure how to route power, consult an electrician. Legrand’s support page discusses the distinction and recommends an electrician for a permanently wired receptacle in its constrained-wall example; the specific kit shown there is marked discontinued, so it is not a current product recommendation. Legrand / On-Q support page.
If the cable will not pass
- The plug will not fit: Check the opening and conduit clearance. Do not pull harder; a larger route or a suitable detachable-head cable may be needed.
- The line catches or stops: Ease back, check the route and attachment, and try to identify the obstruction. Do not yank the cable through an unknown blockage.
- The route crosses a plenum or uncertain construction: Verify the cable marking and local requirements before continuing. Seek qualified help if you cannot confirm the correct method.
- Picture or sound fails after pulling: Check that both connectors are fully seated and test the cable and devices before closing the openings. A damaged cable or a cable that does not support the required signal may need replacement.
There is no single pulling-force limit, minimum bend radius, conduit diameter, or separation distance established here for every cable and wall assembly. Follow the cable and conduit manufacturers’ instructions and the rules that apply to the installation.
