Angular’s NG01902 means a Signal Forms field no longer resolves to the same property in the current model structure. The usual causes are removing that property, setting it to undefined, or continuing to use an old field reference after the model’s structure changes. Find the write or reference that broke the connection, then read the field again from the current form tree.
What NG01902 means
NG01902 is a connection error between a Signal Forms Field and the model structure it represents. A field is orphaned when its previous path can no longer be resolved as the same property in its parent object. It is not a generic validation message. Angular’s NG01902 error reference describes the error and its common triggers.

What can orphan a field
Removing a property
If an update deletes a property that a field previously represented, the existing field reference no longer matches the model structure. Check model updates that construct a new object without that property, as well as code that explicitly removes it.

Setting a property to undefined
In Signal Forms, Angular treats undefined as meaning that a field does not exist. Assigning it to a previously present property can therefore orphan the field. If the property should remain part of the model, use null or another explicit value that fits the model instead.

Reusing a stale field reference
A field reference obtained before a structural model update may no longer describe the current form tree. Continuing to use it after the update can produce NG01902 even if you have corrected the model’s intended shape.
How to diagnose and fix the error
- Identify the affected field path. Use the error context and the code around the failing operation to determine which model property the field represents.
- Trace updates to that property. Look for writes that remove it, replace its parent object without it, or assign it
undefined. Check the code path that runs immediately before the error, including conditional updates. - Decide whether the field should exist. If it should remain present, preserve the property in the model and use an explicit value such as
nullwhere appropriate. If the structure is intentionally changing, do not assume an earlier field reference remains valid. - Read the field from the current form tree. After a structural update, obtain the field again from the current tree rather than carrying forward a reference created against the previous structure.
- Reproduce and verify the update path. Confirm that the current field resolves against the intended model after the change. The right fix depends on which write or stale reference caused the mismatch.
These are Angular’s documented recommendations, not a universal workaround: an application may have more than one update path, and the exact invalidating change must be identified in its code.

Array tracking: a reported Angular 21 case
An Angular repository issue opened January 22, 2026 describes an array-of-objects case in Angular 21.0/21.1. The reporter said tracking by $index worked but was undesirable when order could change; tracking by object identity triggered NG0956, while tracking by a field value led to an orphan-field error. The issue page shows the project status as “Done.” This is a report from a particular setup, not evidence that the same behavior occurs in every release or that the status settles all array-tracking questions.

Version and scope
Angular’s error page identifies its build as v22.2.1 and was accessed on October 7, 2026. The array-tracking report records Angular 21.0/21.1 environments. These sources do not establish which release introduced NG01902 or show that every orphan-field scenario is fixed in a particular release.
