Wokwi is the stronger fit if you need broad ESP32-family coverage or want to work across multiple firmware frameworks. Cirkit Designer is worth considering if you want an integrated visual circuit-design workflow with AI assistance and are building around its documented ESP32-S3 Arduino path. Neither is universally best: check your exact chip, peripherals, firmware workflow, network needs, and sharing requirements before choosing.

How Wokwi and Cirkit Designer differ

What matters Wokwi Cirkit Designer
Documented ESP32 focus Multiple ESP32-family variants, with support varying by chip and peripheral. Its simulator page focuses on ESP32-S3 projects.
Firmware workflows Documentation covers Arduino Core/ESP-IDF-oriented projects, MicroPython, CircuitPython, Rust, and custom firmware. The simulator page emphasizes Arduino sketches; confirm current support if you need another framework.
Design workflow Online circuit simulation with features including a virtual logic analyzer, GDB debugging, and Visual Studio Code integration. Positions visual circuit design and AI assistance for wiring and code as central features.
Network work Documents Virtual WiFi and workflows including MQTT, HTTP, and NTP. Its ESP32-S3 page describes Wi-Fi and IoT workflows.
Free-tier terms Community is listed at €0 per month, with unlimited simulations and public projects. Projects on this tier are public. Current detailed pricing and free-tier limits are not established by the accessible official pricing information.

These are product-documentation comparisons, not independent performance tests. Cirkit Designer’s own comparison page, marked “Reviewed May 18, 2026,” frames Wokwi as broader and Cirkit as focused on AI-assisted design; treat that characterization as vendor-authored positioning, not a benchmark.

What is the best ESP32 simulator for your project?

Choose Wokwi for more chip and firmware options

Wokwi’s ESP32 guide lists ESP32, C3, S2, S3, C5 (alpha), C6, C61, H2, S31 (alpha), and P4 (beta). The guide also identifies peripheral behavior that is partial, in progress, or unsupported. A listed chip does not guarantee that every feature you need is modeled: check the specific peripheral and board workflow in the Wokwi ESP32 simulation guide.

Consider Cirkit Designer for a visual, AI-assisted ESP32-S3 workflow

Cirkit Designer’s ESP32 simulator page describes browser-based ESP32-S3 projects using Arduino sketches, connected components, GPIO, Wi-Fi, and IoT workflows. The product presents AI help with wiring and code alongside circuit design. Its broader documentation describes an online circuit design and simulation platform with community components and Arduino coding tools.

If your target is a different ESP32-family chip or your project depends on a framework other than Arduino, verify that Cirkit Designer currently supports the exact combination before committing to it. The ESP32-S3-focused page alone does not establish wider chip or toolchain coverage.

  • Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
  • Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
  • USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
  • Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision

Can you simulate ESP32 projects online?

Yes. Both services describe browser-based ESP32 simulation workflows, so you can begin without a physical development board. Online simulation is useful for experimenting with code, GPIO connections, and supported components, but it cannot establish that a real circuit will behave identically. Physical wiring, power delivery, radio conditions, and component tolerances still need hardware validation.

Wokwi says, “Wokwi is free for personal use.” Its pricing page lists the Community plan at €0 per month, unlimited simulations, unlimited public projects, and Virtual WiFi. The page specifies that free projects are public and use a shared public IoT gateway. It lists unlisted projects and a private IoT gateway among paid-plan additions; amounts shown for paid monthly plans are annual-billing rates and may change.

Cirkit Designer’s currently accessible official pricing information does not establish detailed plan prices or limits, so do not assume its simulator is free or infer privacy terms from Wokwi’s policy.

What to check before building in either simulator

  • Target board: Match the exact ESP32-family chip and board, not just the broad “ESP32” label.
  • Peripherals: Confirm that the simulator implements the GPIO modes, buses, radios, or other devices your project actually uses; note whether support is partial or unavailable.
  • Firmware: Verify the framework and language you plan to use. Wokwi documents several options; Cirkit’s showcased simulator workflow emphasizes Arduino sketches.
  • Network behavior: Check whether the specific protocol and server/client pattern you need are supported, along with any gateway or plan conditions.
  • Sharing and privacy: Account for Wokwi Community projects being public. Do not assume Cirkit Designer has equivalent privacy or sharing terms without checking its current plan details.
  • Real-hardware validation: Use a board matched to your chip, pinout, and peripherals for the final checks. An ESP32-S3 development board is a possible follow-on for an ESP32-S3 design, not a requirement for starting in either simulator.

Bottom line: pick by workflow, not by the word “free”

Start with Wokwi when breadth of documented ESP32 variants, multiple firmware options, or an explicitly listed free personal-use tier matters most. Consider Cirkit Designer when its ESP32-S3 Arduino workflow and integrated visual design with AI wiring and code assistance align with your project. In either case, verify the chip and peripheral support before trusting a simulation as a substitute for testing on hardware.
