Anduril and Palantir both sell technology to national-security customers, but they are not the same kind of company. Palantir is primarily a software company: its Foundry, Gotham and AIP platforms organize data, support operations and connect artificial-intelligence models to controlled workflows. Anduril is a private defense-technology company that combines autonomous vehicles, sensors, counter-drone and other field systems with software, including its Lattice Mesh platform.
They can compete for the same defense-technology budgets, yet they can also be partners on one program. A December 2024 consortium announcement described Anduril integrating Lattice Mesh with Palantir systems, making the relationship more nuanced than a simple head-to-head comparison.

What each company actually sells
Palantir: an enterprise and government software layer
Palantir sells subscriptions and related services for software that turns an organization’s scattered data into governed applications and operational decisions. Its three principal platforms address different parts of that need:

- Foundry is the enterprise data and operations platform. Companies use it to connect data sources, model business objects, build workflows and monitor operations.
- Gotham is oriented toward government, defense and intelligence work. It links data from multiple sources for mission planning, investigations, command and other operational tasks.
- AIP connects generative-AI models to an organization’s approved data, applications and rules. The emphasis is controlled use of AI inside existing workflows rather than an unrestricted public chatbot.
The software can run in Palantir’s hosted environment or in a customer-controlled environment. Palantir’s 2024 Form 10-K describes revenue from hosted Palantir Cloud subscriptions with ongoing operations and maintenance, on-premises software subscriptions with ongoing operations and maintenance, and professional services. That makes Palantir a software vendor even when its deployments support military users or run on sensitive infrastructure.

Anduril: deployed defense systems plus software
Anduril’s offering starts with physical systems that can be fielded: autonomous air, maritime and ground platforms, sensors, counter-drone capabilities and other defense equipment. Software is a central part of those systems rather than a separate add-on. Its Lattice Mesh software is designed to connect sensors, vehicles and effectors into a common, software-defined defense network.
This combination gives Anduril a different value proposition from a pure software supplier. A buyer can acquire a complete capability that includes sensing, autonomy, communications, command software, manufacturing and support. The hardware may be an autonomous aircraft, a surveillance sensor or a counter-uncrewed-aircraft system; Lattice provides the coordination layer that allows those assets to share information and respond quickly.
The practical distinction
When a customer buys Palantir, the central deliverable is an enterprise software environment and the services needed to configure it. When a customer buys Anduril, the central deliverable is generally a fielded defense capability whose performance depends on integrated hardware, autonomy, sensors and software. Both companies use software and AI, but their economic exposure is different: Palantir has limited direct hardware exposure, while Anduril must design, manufacture, deliver and sustain physical systems.

Who buys from Palantir?
Palantir reported 711 customers at December 31, 2024. The base spans commercial companies and government agencies worldwide, rather than being limited to defense. Its filing gives examples that include utility operations, automotive manufacturing, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, supply chains, public health and military users.
Revenue was geographically diversified but still U.S.-weighted in 2024: 66% came from U.S. customers and 34% from customers outside the United States. By customer type, 55% of revenue came from government customers and 45% from commercial customers. Those percentages describe revenue mix for the year, not the number of government and commercial accounts.
Government and defense uses
Government users can apply Gotham or Foundry to intelligence analysis, logistics, readiness, mission planning, public-sector operations and other data-intensive work. AIP can add controlled language-model assistance to those workflows, subject to the customer’s security rules and approval processes. The platform is useful when data is distributed across agencies, classified networks or older systems that must remain in place.

Commercial uses
Commercial customers use Foundry to connect operational data and build applications around manufacturing, supply chains, energy, health and other processes. The same underlying capabilities—data integration, permissions, modeling, workflow automation and monitoring—can support a factory or a government operation, although the data sources and compliance requirements differ.

Who buys from Anduril?
Anduril’s publicly described customer base is concentrated in the United States and allied defense, border and national-security institutions. Its systems are intended for missions such as persistent surveillance, protection against drones, maritime awareness, autonomous operations and defense of bases or critical areas.
No comparable public customer-count table is available for Anduril, so it would be misleading to assign it a number similar to Palantir’s 711 customers. The December 2024 consortium announcement with Palantir is clear evidence of Anduril’s national-security orientation: Lattice Mesh and Anduril’s defense-system integration were being connected with Palantir’s data and AI capabilities to accelerate national-security applications.
Why Anduril’s customer list is harder to measure
Anduril is private and does not publish the same standardized annual customer and revenue disclosures required of a public company. Defense programs can also be described by contract, task order, consortium or prime contractor, making a simple count of end customers difficult. A publicly announced contract value is not necessarily the same as revenue recognized in a particular year.
How Palantir makes money
Palantir’s business is built around long-duration software relationships. Its 2024 filing says the company generates revenue from subscriptions to access its platforms in a hosted environment, subscriptions in customers’ environments with ongoing operations and maintenance, and professional services.

With Palantir Cloud, the customer accesses software hosted by Palantir. The subscription can include the computing environment, updates, security operations and support required to keep the platform available. This model can simplify deployment for workloads that are permitted to run in a hosted environment.

On-premises software
For customers that need control over infrastructure, data locality or network isolation, Palantir installs software in the customer’s environment. Ongoing operations and maintenance services accompany the subscription. An on-premises deployment can require more coordination with the customer’s security, infrastructure and accreditation teams, but it may be necessary for sensitive or disconnected settings.
Professional services and expansion
Professional services configure data connections, applications and workflows and help users adopt the platform. Palantir commonly uses pilots and AIP bootcamps to demonstrate a specific workflow, then expands deployments when the customer sees operational value. The company identifies high installation costs, complex data environments and long sales cycles as barriers to entry. Those barriers can also make a successful deployment difficult to replace, because the software becomes connected to data models, permissions and day-to-day processes.
How Anduril makes money
Anduril’s model is closer to a modern defense prime than to a conventional enterprise-software vendor. It develops products, wins government programs, manufactures systems, delivers them to the field and provides the software, upgrades and support needed to operate them.

Program and contract revenue
Defense agencies may buy a defined number of systems, a capability under a multiyear program or a combination of hardware, software and services. Revenue recognition depends on the contract structure and delivery, so a contract announcement or total contract value should not be treated as equivalent to one year of sales.
Manufacturing and sustainment
Physical production introduces costs and risks that a software company does not face to the same degree: components, factories, quality assurance, test ranges, logistics, field maintenance and supply-chain resilience. Once systems are deployed, upgrades, spares, training and sustainment can extend the relationship beyond the initial delivery.
Reported scale and financing
Anduril’s 2024 revenue was reported at approximately $1 billion by Axios in 2025, and approximately $1.5 billion in total contract value was also reported. Because Anduril is private, those figures are not presented in the same audited SEC segment format as Palantir’s results. In 2025, Anduril raised $2.5 billion at a reported $30.5 billion valuation. That financing event reflects investor valuation and capital raised; it is not operating revenue.

Which company is bigger?
On the clearest comparable operating measure—2024 revenue—Palantir was larger: $2.9 billion versus Anduril’s approximately $1 billion reported figure. Palantir also disclosed 711 customers and $5.4 billion in total remaining deal value at the end of 2024. Anduril’s approximately $1.5 billion contract-value figure uses a different disclosure context, so it should not be added to or directly ranked against Palantir’s remaining deal value.

They overlap when a defense customer is allocating money to AI, command-and-control, sensor fusion or mission software. Both may be considered for a program that needs to combine data, detect threats and coordinate a response. They can therefore compete for budget share, prime-contractor roles or the software portion of a larger system.
They are not interchangeable products, however. Palantir supplies a data and AI operating layer that can connect many systems. Anduril supplies defense systems and the software that makes those systems autonomous and coordinated. A buyer choosing between them is often deciding which capability is missing: enterprise data integration and governed workflows, or a deployable sensing and response system.
The December 2024 partnership
The companies’ December 2024 consortium announcement demonstrates complementarity. Anduril contributes Lattice Mesh and defense-system integration, while Palantir contributes data and AI software capabilities. In a combined architecture, Anduril systems can provide sensor and platform data, Palantir can organize that data and apply governed AI workflows, and the resulting information can support human operators and automated responses.
A partnership does not eliminate competition. Two vendors can collaborate on one national-security program while competing for another, especially when procurement officials are deciding which company should provide the system-of-systems integration layer.
Deployment, procurement and contract differences
Deployment environment
Palantir deployments are software installations, whether hosted or on-premises. The critical questions are network access, data classification, identity management, integrations, accreditation and the customer’s ability to operate the environment. AIP adds questions about which models may be used, what data they can access and how generated outputs are reviewed.
Anduril deployments involve physical installation and operation as well as software configuration. Buyers must evaluate site preparation, communications links, maintenance, training, safety procedures, spare parts, mission authorization and interoperability with existing equipment. The software may be updated frequently, but the hardware must remain supportable in the field.
Contract duration and expansion
Palantir’s initial pilot or bootcamp can lead to additional users, applications and business units. Expansion is usually a software-commercial motion, although the customer may need new infrastructure or services for a larger deployment.
Anduril’s expansion can mean more systems, additional sites, new mission modules, sustainment years and upgrades. A program may begin as a prototype or limited deployment and later become a production contract. The timing of revenue can therefore be affected by testing, acceptance and manufacturing schedules.
Switching costs
Palantir switching costs arise from integrated data pipelines, ontology or data models, permissions, applications and trained users. Replacing the platform can require rebuilding those connections and revalidating security controls.
Anduril switching costs include installed equipment, operator training, logistics, maintenance infrastructure and the operational data accumulated by the system. Interoperability standards can reduce lock-in, but replacing a fielded capability still involves physical and mission risk.
How to evaluate the two for a real program
- Define the mission gap. Decide whether the immediate problem is fragmented data and decision workflows, a missing sensor or autonomous platform, or an end-to-end system that requires both.
- Map the operating environment. Record network classification, disconnected or edge locations, cloud permissions, data owners, identity systems and accreditation requirements.
- Separate software and hardware requirements. A Palantir evaluation should test integrations, data governance, application development and AI controls. An Anduril evaluation should also test endurance, sensing, autonomy, communications, maintenance and production readiness.
- Model the full contract. Include subscriptions, professional services, operations and maintenance, hardware, spares, training, infrastructure, upgrades and sustainment. Do not compare a software subscription with a hardware contract using price alone.
- Set interoperability requirements. Specify the sensors, systems, data formats and command interfaces that must remain usable if another vendor is added later.
- Measure operational outcomes. Choose metrics such as time to find relevant data, time to make a decision, false-alarm rate, mission availability, operator workload, deployment time or cost per site. The public information available for these companies does not establish a universal product-performance ranking.
- Check disclosure quality. Treat Palantir’s SEC-reported figures as audited public-company metrics. Treat Anduril’s reported revenue, contract value and financing valuation as private-company disclosures with different definitions and verification limits.
Common mistakes when comparing them
- Calling both companies software vendors. Anduril’s software is inseparable from a portfolio of physical defense systems.
- Calling both companies defense contractors in the same sense. Palantir serves defense but also derives 45% of 2024 revenue from commercial customers.
- Using valuation as sales. Anduril’s reported $30.5 billion valuation after a $2.5 billion 2025 financing is not revenue or profit.
- Comparing contract totals without definitions. Palantir’s $5.4 billion remaining deal value and Anduril’s approximately $1.5 billion reported total contract value may cover different populations and time periods.
- Assuming a partnership means one company acquired the other. The December 2024 consortium describes technology integration and collaboration, not a merger.
- Inventing a customer count for Anduril. No comparable public count is established.
- Expecting a universal winner. The right choice depends on whether the program needs a governed data-and-AI layer, fielded defense hardware, or an integrated architecture using both.
Bottom line
Palantir is the larger, publicly reported business and the broader software platform provider, with Foundry, Gotham and AIP serving commercial and government customers. Anduril is a private defense-technology company whose differentiation is the integration of autonomous hardware, sensors, effectors and Lattice Mesh software for national-security missions. They overlap in defense AI and command systems, but they solve different primary problems. In some procurements they compete; in others, the December 2024 consortium shows how their products can be combined.
