Android XR glasses can signal access in two ways: Android’s privacy indicators show when an app is using the camera, microphone, or location, while a manufacturer’s hardware safeguards—such as recording LEDs and wear detection—show or restrict recording on the glasses themselves. Google says the raw eye, hand, and face images used for core tracking are processed in real time, deleted, never stored on the device, and never sent to Google. Derived eye and face measurements are different: they remain on the device until a factory reset.
That distinction matters because an operating-system indicator, a physical recording light, a saved recording, and a cloud service are separate privacy layers. The controls and retention rules below explain what each layer can and cannot tell you.

What Android XR privacy indicators show
Android displays privacy indicators for camera, microphone, and location access. When one of these resources is active, an icon appears in the status area and then remains as a dot while the access is still active or considered recent. Tap the indicator to see which app accessed the resource and which permissions it used.
The recent-access window is intentionally short but not instantaneous. Android treats camera and microphone access as recent for the previous 15 seconds. Location access remains in the recent view for 20 seconds. These timings come from the Android Open Source Project documentation updated October 9, 2026.

| Resource | What Android reports | Recent-access period |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | An active or recent-use indicator, with the app and permission visible after tapping | 15 seconds after access ends |
| Microphone | An active or recent-use indicator, with the app and permission visible after tapping | 15 seconds after access ends |
| Location | An active or recent-use indicator, with the app and permission visible after tapping | 20 seconds after access ends |
These indicators describe Android-level access. They do not prove that every sensor, local service, or hardware function is recording, and their presence does not identify where data will be stored after an app receives it. A camera indicator means an app accessed the camera; it is not a guarantee that the app saved a video or uploaded anything.
How to inspect an indicator
- Look for the camera, microphone, or location icon or dot in the Android status area.
- Tap it to open the privacy dialog.
- Read the app name and the permission or resource shown.
- Open the relevant permission page if you want to deny future access.
Physical recording lights and wear detection
Android’s indicator is the operating-system view. A glasses maker can add a second, device-level layer. In an interview about announced Samsung intelligent eyewear, Samsung Executive Vice President and Head of the XR R&D Team James Choi said an outward-facing LED and an inner LED show when recording is active. Samsung also says wear detection automatically disables recording when the glasses are removed, and recording stops if the external LED is blocked.
Those statements describe Samsung’s announced eyewear behavior, not a universal rule for every Android XR product. Android XR is a platform category, and hardware, launch timing, regional availability, and features can differ. Check the maker’s instructions for the exact model you use.

What the two LED positions are intended to do
- Outward-facing LED: gives people in front of the wearer a visible indication that recording is active.
- Inner LED: gives the wearer a direct indication inside the frame.
- Wear detection: according to Samsung, removes the ability to record when the glasses are taken off.
- Blocked-indicator response: Samsung says recording stops if the external LED is blocked.
A light is a safeguard, not a complete audit trail. It can tell you that the device says recording is active, but it does not disclose every diagnostic event, app transmission, or retention period. Conversely, an Android privacy dot can appear for a camera or microphone access that is not the same as a user-started video recording.

What eye, hand, and face data is stored
Google separates the camera images used to understand movement from the measurements calculated from those images.
Transient perception images
Google says Android XR analyzes images of the eyes, hands, and face from headset cameras to understand gaze and hand and face movement. Those images are processed in real time and deleted; Google says they are never stored on the device and never sent to Google. In practical terms, the raw frames used for core tracking are described as temporary processing inputs rather than a video archive.
Persistent derived measurements
Eye and face measurements are a different data class. Google says these measurements are stored on-device only and remain there until deleted through a factory reset. A factory reset therefore has a larger privacy effect than simply closing an app: it removes the locally retained measurements along with other device data that the reset erases.
| Data type | Processing or storage described by Google | Deletion trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Images of eyes, hands, and face used for core tracking | Processed in real time; not stored on-device and not sent to Google | Deleted after real-time processing |
| Derived eye and face measurements | Stored on-device only | Factory reset |
| Hand, eye, or face information delivered to an app | Available only after the app receives permission; may include gaze direction, hand movement, approximate hand size and shape, and whether eyes are open or closed | Controlled through the app’s permission and data-deletion options |
| Recordings, diagnostics, or account data | Depends on the recording feature, app, phone, and account settings; no single Android XR retention schedule is specified | Use the relevant app, phone, account, or device controls |
The permission boundary is important. Apps must ask before receiving hand, eye, and face information. Granting access can expose interpreted signals such as gaze direction or eye-open state even when the underlying camera images are not retained.

Do Samsung AI glasses send camera and microphone data to Google?
There is no blanket statement in the available product material that answers every possible transmission path for every future Android XR glasses feature. Google’s Android XR announcement describes glasses with cameras, microphones, and speakers that work with a phone and use what the glasses see and hear so Gemini can understand context. It does not publish a complete retention schedule for every feature, account setting, or third-party app.
Samsung separately says that its intelligent eyewear’s audio, video, and screen-sharing data are not used to train AI models. That is a statement about model training, not a promise that no data is transmitted, processed by a phone or service, or retained for another operational purpose. It also does not define how an unrelated third-party app handles data after receiving permission.
To evaluate a specific feature, ask four separate questions: what sensor is accessed, which app accesses it, where processing occurs, and how long the resulting data is retained. An answer to the training question covers only one of those four.

Deny camera, microphone, or location access
- Open Settings.
- Select Security and privacy.
- Open Permission manager.
- Choose Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Select the app whose access you want to change.
- Choose the least-permissive option that still works for your use case, such as denying access or allowing it only while the app is in use when that option is offered.
Labels can vary by device build and app capability. If a permission does not appear for an app, that app may not have requested it, or the device may expose the control through a product-specific companion-phone setting.
Review recent access in Privacy dashboard
- Go to Settings > Security and privacy.
- Tap Privacy dashboard.
- Select camera, microphone, or location.
- Review the apps shown and open an app entry to change its permission.
The dashboard and status indicator answer different time horizons: the indicator is useful when access is happening or has just ended, while the dashboard is for reviewing access history presented by Android.
Turn off device-wide microphone or location access
- Open Settings > Security and privacy.
- Use the microphone or location control to switch the resource off at the device level.
- Re-enable it only when a feature that genuinely needs it is in use.
A device-wide switch can interrupt calling, navigation, voice commands, accessibility features, or other functions. If an app still behaves unexpectedly after the switch is restored, check its individual permission as well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun the security-and-privacy checkup
- Open Settings > Security and privacy.
- Start the security-and-privacy checkup.
- Resolve suggested actions, including setting a PIN, password, or biometric lock where appropriate.
A screen lock protects locally retained measurements and other device data if the glasses or connected phone are lost. It does not change an app’s own server-side retention policy.

Usage and diagnostics: a separate data channel
Google’s usage-and-diagnostics controls let users turn sharing on or off. Examples of diagnostic information include battery level, app-use frequency, and the quality and length of mobile, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections. If Web & App Activity is enabled, this information may be stored with the user’s account.
Diagnostics are not the same as camera, microphone, eye, hand, or face permissions. Turning diagnostics off does not stop an app from collecting information that its own permission and privacy policy allow. Conversely, denying an app’s camera permission does not necessarily disable system diagnostics about battery or connectivity.
How to reason about a privacy incident
You see a camera or microphone indicator unexpectedly
- Tap the indicator immediately and note the app named by Android.
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy dashboard to review the access entry.
- Revoke the app’s camera or microphone permission in Permission manager.
- Force-close or uninstall the app if its behavior is not needed.
- Check the glasses maker’s recording indicator and companion-phone settings separately.
The physical recording light is not visible
For Samsung’s announced intelligent eyewear, Samsung says recording stops when the external LED is blocked and when wear detection senses that the glasses have been removed. Do not assume that behavior applies to another maker’s hardware. Stop using the feature, check the model’s documentation, and verify whether an Android indicator identifies an active camera or microphone client.

Google states that those derived measurements remain on-device until a factory reset. Back up anything you need, remove accounts as appropriate, and use the device’s factory-reset procedure. A reset is destructive: it removes local content and settings, so treat it as a final deletion action rather than a routine permission change.
Limits of the current public disclosures
The available official statements establish how Android indicators work, how Google describes core tracking images and measurements, and what Samsung says about its announced recording safeguards and AI-training use. They do not establish one universal policy for every Android XR glasses model, phone companion, cloud feature, or third-party app.
In particular, the public material does not provide a single retention period for all recordings, a complete list of every server that might process a feature, or a universal launch and availability schedule for Samsung eyewear. Treat “not used to train AI models” as narrower than “never transmitted” or “never retained.” For a purchase or deployment decision, read the model-specific privacy notice and app permissions in the region where the device is sold.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy checklist
- Confirm which physical LED indicates recording and whether the model has an inward-facing indicator.
- Test what happens when the glasses are removed and when the outward LED is covered, if the maker claims those safeguards.
- Know the Android indicator timings: 15 seconds for recent camera or microphone use and 20 seconds for recent location use.
- Review camera, microphone, location, hand, eye, and face permissions before granting them.
- Use Privacy dashboard to inspect recent app access.
- Keep a screen lock enabled on the glasses or connected phone.
- Separate raw perception images, derived measurements, recordings, diagnostics, and account data when assessing risk.
- Use a factory reset when you need to delete the on-device eye and face measurements Google says persist until reset.
- Read the specific app and manufacturer privacy terms for cloud retention and third-party processing.
