Private DNS encrypts DNS-over-TLS lookups—the requests that translate a hostname such as example.com into an IP address. A VPN app can create an Android VPN service connection to a gateway and route some or all device traffic through it. Use Private DNS when encrypted name resolution is enough; use a VPN when you need connection-wide routing on an untrusted network. A VPN provider then becomes a trusted intermediary for the traffic it carries. You can enable both, but the way DNS is selected can vary by Android version, device maker, and VPN app.
What each feature actually protects
Android’s Private DNS and VPN controls are often presented beside each other, but they operate at different layers of a connection. Understanding that boundary prevents the most common configuration mistake: assuming encrypted DNS is a general-purpose privacy tunnel.

Private DNS protects DNS messages
When an app needs to connect to a hostname, the device normally asks a DNS resolver for the corresponding IP address. Android’s Private DNS mode uses DNS over TLS (DoT), wrapping those DNS queries and responses in an encrypted channel to a resolver that supports it. An on-path observer, such as someone monitoring the same Wi‑Fi network, should not be able to read or alter those DNS messages once the secure channel is established.

Android’s own documentation draws a strict boundary: “The secure channel only applies to DNS, so it can’t protect users from other kinds of security and privacy violations.” Your browser, app traffic, updates, and other payload data do not automatically travel through that DNS channel. Private DNS also does not change your public IP address or make a remote website treat you as if you were connecting from another location.

On supported networks, current Pixel documentation says Private DNS is used by default. Android can try to upgrade DNS automatically when the network’s resolver supports DNS-over-TLS, or you can enter a specific provider hostname. The exact option labels vary by Android build and manufacturer.
A VPN can route device traffic
An Android VPN app uses the platform’s VPN service APIs to connect to a VPN gateway. The service can install routes, choose which traffic enters the tunnel, and configure DNS servers for that tunnel. Depending on the app and its settings, the tunnel can carry all device traffic or only selected apps, destinations, or networks.
Traffic sent through the tunnel is protected between the device and the VPN gateway according to the VPN protocol and app configuration. The local Wi‑Fi operator or mobile carrier generally sees an encrypted connection to the gateway rather than each routed destination. The VPN provider, however, becomes a trusted intermediary for traffic it carries: it can observe connection metadata and may be able to observe unencrypted application data. HTTPS and other end-to-end encryption still matter after traffic leaves the VPN gateway.
Private DNS versus VPN at a glance
| Question | Private DNS | VPN |
|---|---|---|
| What is encrypted? | DNS queries and responses transported with DNS over TLS. | The connection between the device and VPN gateway; the app can route selected or all traffic through it. |
| What remains outside its scope? | Web, app, update, and other payload traffic; IP address and route are unchanged. | Traffic excluded by split-tunnel rules, traffic that bypasses the VPN, and any protection beyond the VPN gateway. |
| Who must you trust? | The DNS resolver you select or the resolver used by Automatic mode. | The VPN provider, its gateway, its logging policy, its jurisdiction, and its operational reliability. |
| Best fit | Encrypted name resolution without adopting a tunnel. | Connection-wide routing or protection on an untrusted Wi‑Fi or mobile network. |
| Typical failure | DNS resolution stops when a custom hostname is unreachable, blocked, or mistyped. | The VPN connection, routes, gateway, or provider policy affects all traffic selected for the tunnel. |
| Built-in Android requirement | Android 9 (Pie) or later for the platform’s DNS-over-TLS support. | An Android VPN service and app configuration; support and features vary by app. |
What Private DNS does—and does not do
It hides or authenticates the lookup in transit
Without secure DNS transport, a network operator can read DNS requests and potentially modify replies. DNS over TLS encrypts the exchange and authenticates the TLS endpoint, reducing those on-path tampering and observation risks. The resolver still receives the query, so Private DNS is not anonymous DNS; it moves trust from the local network to the resolver.
It does not encrypt the rest of a connection
After DNS resolution, an app still connects to the destination using its own protocol. If that protocol is unencrypted, Private DNS does not add encryption. Even when an app uses HTTPS, the website can still receive your IP address, and the network can infer some metadata from the connection. Private DNS does not provide a device-wide tunnel, alter routing, or force every app to use the system resolver.

Apps can bypass system DNS
Android’s security guidance warns that apps implementing their own DNS transport can bypass device defaults. A browser, security tool, or other app may send DNS queries directly or use a separate encrypted DNS protocol. Android recommends allowing the operating system to handle DNS with secure transports on supported SDK levels; insecure custom DNS implementations can enable spoofing or cache-poisoning attacks.
What a VPN does—and the trust you accept
Routing is the defining difference
A VPN service can create a virtual interface and install routes. Full-tunnel mode sends the device’s eligible traffic to the VPN gateway. Split-tunnel mode leaves specified apps or destinations on the ordinary network. The VPN service also determines which DNS servers are used for traffic in the tunnel, so the app’s configuration can matter as much as Android’s global Private DNS setting.

A VPN is useful when you do not want an untrusted hotspot to inspect or manipulate each connection. It is not a blind spot between you and the provider. The provider can generally see your source IP address and the destinations or connection metadata associated with traffic it routes, subject to its design and policy. Review the provider’s logging policy, jurisdiction, ownership, security record, and reliability before treating it as a privacy service. Android’s VPN API documentation does not endorse any particular provider.
A VPN does not replace application security
Use HTTPS, current app versions, strong account authentication, and sensible permissions regardless of whether a VPN is active. A VPN protects the tunnel to its gateway; it cannot repair a malicious app, a compromised account, a fraudulent website, or unencrypted data exposed after the gateway.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet. On another manufacturer’s phone, look for a similarly named network or connection section.
- Open Private DNS.
- Choose one mode:
- Off: do not use Android’s Private DNS mode.
- Automatic: let Android use secure DNS when the network and resolver support it.
- Private DNS provider hostname: enter the resolver’s hostname exactly as supplied by that provider, not a web URL.
- Tap Save if your build displays a save button, then open a few sites and apps that require network access.
A hostname that is misspelled, blocked, or unreachable can prevent names from resolving. If that happens, switch temporarily to Automatic to determine whether the custom resolver is the cause. A managed device may not offer all three choices: Android 10 added administrator controls that can prevent users from changing DNS settings.
How to connect an Android VPN
The exact controls belong to the VPN app, but the Android permission and connection flow is consistent enough to troubleshoot.
- Install a VPN app from a source you trust and review its privacy policy, logging statements, jurisdiction, and required permissions.
- Open the app and sign in or complete its account setup if required.
- Choose a server, protocol, or routing mode when the app offers those options. If you need all traffic protected, select its full-tunnel or equivalent mode rather than a split-tunnel profile.
- Tap the app’s Connect control.
- Approve Android’s VPN connection request. Android displays a VPN indicator when the service is connected.
- Confirm that the app reports a connected state before using an untrusted network. Some apps provide a “block connections without VPN” or similar kill-switch setting; availability and behavior are app-specific.
You can also inspect VPN entries under Settings → Network & internet → VPN on many current builds. That screen may show connection status and system options, while server selection and split-tunnel rules remain inside the app.
Can Private DNS and a VPN run together?
Yes, Android can show Private DNS configured while a VPN service is connected. That does not guarantee a single, universal DNS path. The VPN app may direct DNS queries into its tunnel, replace the resolver, or use its own DNS transport. Android’s official material does not establish one precedence rule that applies to every Android version, VPN app, and device maker when a custom Private DNS hostname and a VPN are enabled together.
Treat the combination as an implementation detail to verify on the exact phone and VPN:

- Record the Private DNS mode and hostname before connecting the VPN.
- Connect the VPN and check whether the app reports its own DNS servers or leak-protection status.
- Test name resolution and ordinary browsing with the VPN connected, then repeat after disconnecting it.
- Change only one setting at a time. If a custom hostname causes failures, return to Automatic and retest.
- Check apps that are configured for their own DNS, because they may ignore both the device setting and the VPN’s DNS choice.
Do not assume that enabling both doubles encryption. It may provide layered protection, but the actual path depends on the VPN service and Android build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which should you use in common situations?
You want safer DNS on ordinary networks
Choose Private DNS when your goal is to prevent local observers from reading or altering DNS lookups, while leaving normal routing unchanged. Automatic mode is the least disruptive starting point. A specific provider hostname gives you an explicit resolver choice, but it also creates a dependency: an outage or filtering policy at that resolver can stop name resolution.
You are using public Wi‑Fi or another untrusted access network
A VPN is the more appropriate tool when you need the device’s eligible traffic routed through an encrypted tunnel to a gateway. It reduces what the hotspot can inspect directly, but it shifts trust to the VPN provider. Keep HTTPS and other end-to-end protections enabled.
You need a different apparent network location
Private DNS cannot provide this because it does not alter routing or your public IP address. A VPN may do so if its gateway and app configuration support the location you need. Availability, performance, and any service restrictions depend on the provider and destination.
Recommended Free Tools
You only need one app routed through a tunnel
Look for split-tunneling controls in the VPN app. The app decides which packages or destinations are included, so verify the result rather than assuming every app is covered. Private DNS remains a separate setting and does not determine split-tunnel membership.
Best Value
You manage company-owned Android devices
Android 10 introduced administrator controls that can prevent users from changing DNS settings. A managed VPN may also enforce routes or connection requirements. Check the organization’s policy before troubleshooting a missing Private DNS option or a VPN that reconnects automatically.
Failure modes and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Most apps report “no internet” after choosing a provider hostname. | The hostname is mistyped, unreachable, blocked, or temporarily unavailable. | Re-enter the hostname exactly; switch to Automatic; test on both Wi‑Fi and mobile data. |
| A browser works, but one app ignores the expected DNS behavior. | The app performs its own DNS queries or uses a separate transport. | Review that app’s network settings and its privacy documentation; do not assume system DNS applies. |
| Everything slows or stops when the VPN connects. | Gateway congestion, protocol incompatibility, broken routes, or a provider-side outage. | Try another server or protocol offered by the app, reconnect, and compare with the VPN disconnected. Contact the provider if the issue persists. |
| Captive-portal Wi‑Fi will not show its sign-in page. | The VPN or custom DNS is active before the network’s login flow completes. | Temporarily disconnect the VPN or use Automatic Private DNS, complete the portal sign-in, then restore your chosen settings. |
| A VPN appears connected, but a particular app still uses the normal network. | Split tunneling, an excluded app, or an app-level network path. | Inspect the VPN’s per-app rules and remove the exclusion if that traffic should be tunneled. |
| Private DNS options are unavailable or revert automatically. | An administrator policy or manufacturer-specific restriction. | Check whether the phone is managed and ask the administrator which DNS policy is enforced. |
Privacy questions to answer before choosing a resolver or VPN
What does the DNS resolver learn?
The resolver receives the DNS names you ask it to resolve, along with connection information needed to answer those requests. Private DNS protects the request from the local network in transit; it does not prevent the resolver from seeing or retaining it. Check the resolver’s stated retention, processing, and jurisdiction terms.
What does a VPN provider learn?
The VPN provider operates the gateway through which routed traffic passes. Depending on protocol, app features, and the destination’s encryption, it can see source address, timing, volume, destination information, and any payload that is not protected end to end. A provider’s logging and abuse-handling policies therefore matter as much as encryption mechanics.
Does Android guarantee that every app uses the secure setting?
No. Android specifically warns that apps with custom DNS implementations can bypass device defaults. A VPN also cannot force traffic that an app deliberately sends outside the VPN or that the app’s split-tunnel rules exclude.
Android versions and compatibility
- Android 9 and later: the platform includes built-in DNS-over-TLS support for Private DNS.
- Android 10: administrators gained the ability to prevent users from changing DNS settings.
- Current Android builds: the menu path and labels can differ by manufacturer; Pixel documentation places Private DNS under Settings → Network & internet.
- VPN support: Android supplies VPN APIs, but routing modes, DNS handling, kill switches, and split tunneling depend on the specific VPN service and app.
The Android Developers guidance on insecure DNS was last updated on 2024-09-24 UTC. It recommends relying on operating-system DNS handling with secure transports on supported SDK levels rather than trusting an app’s unprotected custom resolver.
A simple decision checklist
- Choose Private DNS if your requirement is encrypted DNS lookups and you do not need traffic routing, a changed public IP, or tunnel-wide protection.
- Choose a VPN if you need selected or all device traffic routed through a gateway, especially on a network you do not trust.
- Use both only when you have a reason for each and have verified which DNS path the particular VPN and phone use.
- Review the trust relationship: a Private DNS resolver receives DNS queries; a VPN provider receives the traffic and metadata that its gateway handles.
- Keep application-level protections—HTTPS, updates, account security, and cautious app installation—in place regardless of the network setting.
Bottom line for Android users
Private DNS is a focused DNS-over-TLS safeguard, not a VPN substitute. It can protect hostname lookups from an on-path observer while leaving the rest of each connection and its routing unchanged. A VPN is the right category when you need a tunnel that routes device traffic, but it requires confidence in the provider operating the gateway. Enable the narrowest tool that matches your threat model, and test the exact Android build, app, and network combination whenever DNS behavior matters.
