Android VPN Alternatives: Private DNS, Proxy, and Tor Compared

There is no single VPN substitute on Android. Private DNS encrypts DNS lookups but leaves the rest of your traffic and IP address unchanged. A proxy can reroute traffic only from apps or networks that actually use it. Tor provides multi-hop anonymity and censorship resistance, at the cost of speed, compatibility, and—on Android—beta software. Choose Private DNS for encrypted name lookups, a proxy for a specific proxy-aware workflow, and Tor when anonymity or bypassing censorship matters more than convenience. If you need a managed, device-wide encrypted tunnel, a conventional VPN remains the clearest fit.

What each alternative actually replaces

A VPN normally creates an encrypted tunnel from the phone to a VPN server through Android’s VPN interface. That combination can cover many applications at once and makes sites see the VPN server’s address rather than the phone’s network address. The alternatives below solve narrower problems:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Option Main protection Coverage Does it hide your IP? Typical trade-off
Private DNS Encrypts DNS queries with DNS-over-TLS DNS lookups; other traffic is unchanged No Narrow scope; the resolver still receives your queries
Proxy Relays traffic through an intermediary for software that uses it App- or network-dependent Sometimes, for proxied traffic Apps can bypass it; operator trust and logging matter
Tor Multi-hop anonymity and censorship resistance Depends on the Tor client and routing mode; the Android Tor VPN beta targets broader traffic Yes, for Tor-routed traffic Higher latency, blocked exits, and beta status on Android
Conventional VPN Encrypted tunnel to one VPN server Usually device-wide through Android VPN APIs Yes You must trust the VPN operator and choose a service

“Hiding your IP” also does not mean becoming anonymous. Accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, GPS permissions, and information you submit can still identify you. Each option changes a different part of the path between your phone, the network, and a website.

Private DNS: the simple, narrow option

What it protects

Android 9 introduced Private DNS using DNS-over-TLS. Google for Developers describes it as providing “security and privacy for your DNS queries.” A DNS query is the lookup that turns a name such as example.com into an address. With Private DNS enabled, that lookup is encrypted between the phone and the configured DNS resolver instead of being sent as ordinary, readable DNS traffic.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

This can reduce exposure of the domains you request on a hostile Wi-Fi network and can enable resolver-level filtering. The resolver still sees the queries, however, and the website still sees your public IP when the connection is made. Private DNS does not encrypt arbitrary app payloads, tunnel non-DNS traffic, change your apparent country, or provide an anonymity network.

How to enable it

Menu names vary slightly by manufacturer, but Android 9 and later generally follow this path:

  1. Open Settings and go to Network & internet (sometimes Connections).
  2. Open Private DNS. On some phones it is under More connection settings or an advanced network section.
  3. Choose Private DNS provider hostname and enter the hostname supplied by a DNS provider, or choose Automatic to let the network determine the setting.
  4. Tap Save, reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data if necessary, and test the apps and sites you need.

Use a hostname, not an IP address, when Android asks for a provider hostname. If the resolver cannot be reached, Android may report that Private DNS could not connect; switching temporarily to Automatic helps confirm whether the hostname is the problem.

What Private DNS cannot do

  • It does not hide the phone’s IP address from websites, applications, or the local network.
  • It does not encrypt content sent after DNS resolution. HTTPS protects that content to the destination; Private DNS is not a replacement for HTTPS.
  • It does not force every application to use a particular resolver if another component controls DNS.
  • It does not provide a VPN’s location selection or device-wide tunnel.

Google also documents an important interaction: Private DNS settings have no effect when a VPN or a DNS-changer application is active. The active tunnel or DNS-changing component controls how name resolution is handled.

When Private DNS is the right choice

Choose it when your goal is to prevent plain DNS exposure on public networks, use a resolver’s filtering policy, or make one simple system-level change without installing a tunnel application. It is a good complement to ordinary HTTPS browsing, not a substitute for IP masking or whole-device encryption.

Proxy: useful for one app or one network

How proxying works

A proxy is an intermediary that receives requests from a client and makes onward connections. Android Help exposes proxy controls among advanced network settings. Depending on the protocol, a proxy may handle HTTP, HTTPS through the CONNECT method, or SOCKS traffic. Only software configured to use that proxy—or software that honors the network’s proxy setting—will send traffic through it.

An ordinary proxy does not automatically encrypt every device connection. HTTPS can still encrypt data end to end between the app and its destination when certificate validation succeeds, but the proxy can observe connection metadata and, for non-HTTPS traffic, potentially the content. Apps that ignore Android’s proxy setting, use their own networking stack, or open direct connections can bypass it entirely.

Configure a Wi-Fi proxy

  1. Open Settings and select Network & internet or Connections.
  2. Open the connected Wi-Fi network and choose Edit, Manage network, or Advanced.
  3. Set Proxy to Manual (or Proxy auto-config when your organization supplies a PAC URL).
  4. Enter the proxy host and port. Add authentication credentials only through a trusted, documented configuration.
  5. Save, then test the particular app or browser that is supposed to use the proxy. Check that other apps still behave as expected; they may not be covered.

Labels differ across Android versions and manufacturers. A Wi-Fi proxy setting normally applies to that network, so changing networks can remove the setting or require a new configuration.

Questions to ask before trusting a proxy

  • Coverage: Does the app honor the proxy, and which protocols are supported?
  • Encryption: Is the connection HTTPS from the app to the destination, or is traffic sent in clear text?
  • Operator: Who runs the proxy, and what logging, retention, and abuse policy applies?
  • Authentication: How are credentials protected, and can another user on the same network reuse them?
  • Failure behavior: Does the app fail closed when the proxy is unavailable, or silently connect directly?

A proxy is therefore a targeted tool: valuable for an enterprise network, a testing workflow, or one application that explicitly supports HTTP or SOCKS, but unsuitable as a blanket privacy layer unless every relevant connection is known to use it.

Tor: anonymity and censorship resistance, with compromises

What Tor changes

Tor sends traffic through a distributed sequence of relays rather than one intermediary. The design separates knowledge of who you are from knowledge of where you are connecting, making Tor useful for anonymity and censorship resistance. The Tor Project’s Android product page says, “Tor VPN lets you decide which country websites and apps see, giving you more control over privacy and access.”

The Tor Project’s development post says the primary use case emerging for the Android beta was “unblock the internet,” so bypassing blocking is a central documented goal. Tor can make sites see a Tor exit address instead of your normal address, but it cannot make an account anonymous when you sign in or stop a site from identifying you through browser behavior.

  1. Install the current Tor VPN beta from the Tor Project’s official distribution channel.
  2. Open the app and review which applications or traffic modes it offers. Android will display a system prompt to create a VPN connection; approve it only if the app and publisher are the ones you intended to use.
  3. Select the available country or per-app controls when you need a particular access path. The product is designed to let you decide which country websites and apps see, subject to the beta’s current capabilities.
  4. Connect, then test the sites and applications that matter. A successful connection in one browser does not prove that every app is routed through Tor.
  5. Disconnect from the Tor VPN before diagnosing ordinary network problems, and keep the app updated as beta behavior changes.

Some Tor clients protect only the browser or selected applications; a VPN-style client can target broader Android traffic. Confirm the mode shown in the current app rather than assuming that installing a Tor browser covers the whole phone.

Costs in speed and compatibility

Tor’s multi-hop path generally adds latency compared with a direct connection or a single VPN server. Websites and services may challenge, rate-limit, or block Tor exit addresses, and some apps depend on low latency, fixed locations, or protocols that the Tor client does not carry. No reliable universal speed percentage applies: performance varies by relays, congestion, destination, and time of day.

Use Tor when anonymity, reducing dependence on one commercial operator, or bypassing censorship is more important than seamless streaming, gaming, banking compatibility, or maximum speed. Keep a normal connection available for services that reject Tor, and do not treat Tor as protection against malware or unsafe downloads.

Private DNS and Tor can conflict

Tor’s DNS handling is part of its privacy design. Tor Project support warns that Tor VPN does not support manually setting a DNS provider hostname because doing so can bypass Tor and reveal visited sites to that DNS provider. Its troubleshooting guidance says users who configured an Android Private DNS hostname may need to change that setting before using Tor VPN.

Before connecting Tor VPN, review Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS. If you entered a custom hostname, follow the Tor app’s current instructions; changing to Automatic is commonly required for compatibility. Do not assume that stacking both settings improves privacy. When two components try to control DNS, the result can be a failed connection or DNS requests outside Tor.

How these choices compare in real situations

You only want safer DNS on public Wi-Fi

Use Private DNS. It encrypts the lookup to your chosen resolver while leaving normal application connections intact. Verify that the setting remains active after switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and remember that the network can still observe the destination IPs your phone contacts.

One work app requires an HTTP or SOCKS proxy

Configure the proxy exactly where the app or enterprise instructions specify it. Test that app independently, check its HTTPS behavior, and assume unrelated apps may bypass the proxy unless they explicitly support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need to reach sites blocked in your region

Tor is designed for censorship resistance, and the Android beta’s documented primary use case is unblocking the internet. Expect slower connections and occasional blocked exits. If a service rejects Tor, changing exits may help, but some services block the network broadly.

You need every app to use an encrypted tunnel

Private DNS and a normal proxy do not meet this requirement. Tor VPN may cover broader Android traffic depending on its current beta mode, but coverage must be verified per app. A conventional VPN using Android’s VPN interface is the most predictable fit for managed, device-wide tunneling.

You want websites to see another IP and country

Private DNS cannot do this. A proxy can do it only for traffic that uses the proxy, and the proxy operator controls the apparent address. Tor can change the address for Tor-routed traffic and offers country controls in its Android product, but blocked exits and compatibility limits are common. A conventional VPN offers the most consistent location selection across ordinary apps, at the cost of trusting one operator.

Troubleshooting checklist

Private DNS shows an error

  • Check the provider hostname for spelling and remove spaces.
  • Switch to Automatic to confirm that the network itself works.
  • Disable any active VPN or DNS-changer app while testing, because it can override Private DNS.
  • Try both Wi-Fi and mobile data; a network may block DNS-over-TLS.

The proxy appears to do nothing

  • Confirm that the app honors the Android or Wi-Fi proxy setting.
  • Check the host, port, credentials, and whether the proxy supports the protocol the app uses.
  • Test an HTTPS site and inspect the app’s own connection diagnostics if available.
  • Remember that direct connections from other apps are expected unless those apps are separately configured.

Tor is slow or a service refuses to load

  • Try again later; relay congestion and exit availability change over time.
  • Check whether the app is routed through Tor or only the selected browser/apps.
  • Expect captchas, login challenges, and outright Tor blocking on some services.
  • Review Private DNS and remove a manually configured hostname if Tor’s support instructions require it.
  • Use a non-Tor connection for services that require a stable, low-latency or non-Tor address.

A practical decision rule

  1. Write down the asset you are protecting: DNS history, app traffic, your IP address, or access to blocked sites.
  2. Choose the narrowest tool that actually covers that asset: Private DNS for DNS queries, a proxy for a known proxy-aware app, Tor for anonymity or censorship resistance.
  3. Check coverage before relying on it. “Enabled” in Android settings does not prove that every app is using the same path.
  4. Account for trust. A DNS resolver, proxy operator, Tor exit, and VPN provider each see different parts of your activity.
  5. Test failure behavior on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, and retest after Android or app updates.

The key distinction is scope. Private DNS protects a lookup, a proxy relays selected connections, and Tor changes the route for traffic assigned to it. Match that scope to your actual requirement instead of treating any privacy-labelled setting as a full VPN replacement.
