An Android version update moves a tablet to a newer Android release; a security update delivers security patches and related fixes without necessarily changing that release number. Redmi owners should check both the Android version and Android security update shown in Settings, then judge any support promise against the tablet’s exact model and region.
What is the difference between an Android version update and a security update?
An Android version update is an upgrade to a newer Android release. A security update supplies patches and related fixes; it can arrive while the tablet remains on the same Android release. The two are separate measures of software support, so seeing a recent Android version does not by itself establish how current the security patch is.

Xiaomi’s update screen distinguishes the Android version from the Android security update. Check both fields rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Xiaomi’s published commitments differ by model. The figures below are the durations and update counts stated on the official pages; those pages do not give publication years for the claims.

| Model and scope | Android version updates | Security maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Original Redmi Pad, India | Two versions of Android and MIUI over three years, according to Xiaomi India’s Redmi Pad FAQ. | Three years of security updates, according to the same FAQ. |
| Redmi Pad SE 4G, India | Two major Android updates, according to Xiaomi India’s Redmi Pad SE 4G FAQ. | Three years of Google security maintenance, according to the same FAQ. |
These are separate product commitments, not a universal policy for every Redmi tablet or market. Xiaomi’s broader security-support policy says its smartphones typically receive security updates for at least two years after first shipment; some models may receive three years or longer, subject to actual conditions. It also says necessary fixes may be issued for very serious vulnerabilities even when a device is on its end-of-life list. That page concerns smartphones, so it is context—not a substitute for the tablet’s own commitment. See Xiaomi’s smartphone security-support policy.

Xiaomi recommends ensuring sufficient storage before downloading and installing an update. Menu labels and paths can vary by model and software build. If the route does not match your tablet, search Settings for “update” or use the instructions for the exact model on Xiaomi’s REDMI Pad SE 8.7 support page.
How to interpret a support promise
Before comparing a published promise with what your tablet currently shows, identify the exact model and regional variant. Then separate the Android-upgrade count from the security-maintenance duration: they describe different kinds of updates.

- Check the model and region. A promise for the original Redmi Pad in India should not be applied automatically to another Redmi Pad model or a tablet sold elsewhere.
- Keep upgrade count and support duration distinct. “Two Android updates” describes major-version upgrades; “three years of security updates” describes security maintenance. One does not replace the other.
- Do not calculate an end date from duration alone. The cited tablet pages give durations but do not establish the first-shipment date needed to turn them into a calendar end date.
- Check the tablet itself for current status. The published commitments do not establish the current rollout status for every model, region, and software branch. The update screen shows the device’s information and lets you check for an available update.
What the published Redmi Pad commitment means
For the original Redmi Pad in India, Xiaomi says the tablet shipped with MIUI 13 coupled with Android 12, and promises three years of security updates plus two versions of Android and MIUI updates over three years. The launch software is listed in Xiaomi India’s Redmi Pad specifications; the support commitment is in its Redmi Pad FAQ. Xiaomi does not state a publication year for the commitment on the cited FAQ, so the duration should not be converted into an assumed calendar deadline.
For a different India-market example, the Redmi Pad SE 4G has its own stated commitment: two major Android updates and three years of Google security maintenance. Its terms are listed separately in the Redmi Pad SE 4G FAQ.
