Android tablets have a more convincing case in 2026 because Google is developing desktop-style windowing for compatible large screens while manufacturers are building tablets for distinct jobs. That does not mean every tablet already has the new software features: Google says desktop windowing is planned to roll out to compatible devices later in 2026. Among announced hardware, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 line targets productivity and creative work, while Lenovo’s Tab Plus Gen 2 is designed around video, sound, and flexible viewing.
What makes Android tablets more interesting in 2026?
The change is happening on two fronts: Android is gaining a more desktop-like approach to multitasking on large screens, and tablet makers are differentiating their products instead of treating every model as a smaller laptop or oversized phone. The result is a more useful choice—but only if you match the device to your work and check which features are available on its exact model.

Android 16 is adding desktop-style windowing, with a phased rollout
Google says it developed Android 16 desktop windowing with Samsung for large-screen devices. It is intended to complement single-app and split-screen modes: users will be able to open multiple app windows on one screen, then move and resize them. For someone working across documents, a browser, and messaging, that could make a tablet easier to use as a compact workstation.
Availability is the important qualification. Google described the feature as planned for compatible devices later in 2026, not as a capability already present on every Android tablet. Google also said custom keyboard shortcuts and taskbar overflow are forthcoming, while external-display enhancements are planned for future updates. Check the rollout status for the specific tablet and software version before buying on the assumption that these tools are ready.

Google’s Android 16 announcement also discusses Advanced Protection, a general Android security feature. It does not establish a special tablet-only security benefit.
Hardware makers are targeting different routines
Samsung’s announced Galaxy Tab S12 series emphasizes a large display, an included S Pen, and creative and productivity software. Lenovo’s Tab Plus Gen 2 instead centers on entertainment: a built-in kickstand, a multi-speaker system, and a display specified for video features. These are different product priorities, not evidence that one tablet is better for every user.

For work, drawing, and note-taking
The S12 models are the clearest fit in this group if you want a bundled pen and a device positioned for creative and productivity apps. The Ultra’s larger screen may help when you need room for a canvas or several work areas, but a 14.6-inch tablet is also a larger device to carry and hold. The S12+ offers a 12.6-inch display if you want a somewhat smaller panel.

Do not treat an Android 16 label by itself as proof that desktop windowing is active. Google’s planned rollout is limited to compatible devices, so confirm the feature’s availability on the exact model and software release. Also check whether a keyboard cover is included or optional and whether the keyboard you want fits that model.
For movies, video, and shared viewing
Lenovo’s Tab Plus Gen 2 is the more explicitly media-oriented option. Its announced hardware pairs a 12.1-inch 2.5K LCD with Dolby Vision and HDR10, a rotating kickstand for portrait or landscape viewing, and a JBL nine-unit Pro speaker system with Dolby Atmos. Lenovo also describes a built-in Bluetooth speaker mode.

Lenovo states battery life of up to 15 hours of YouTube streaming. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result; actual runtime depends on conditions and use.
For a smaller or less demanding tablet
Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report also lists the Galaxy Tab S11 and S11 Ultra with Android 16 and One UI 8.0, as well as the Tab S10 Lite and Tab A11 and A11+. In that report, the Tab A11 is listed with an 8.7-inch display and the Tab A11+ with an 11-inch display; microSD expansion up to 2 TB is listed for the covered models. These figures establish a broader size range, but the report does not establish current street prices or a complete software-support-duration policy.

How to choose the right Android tablet
- Start with the job. Decide whether you mainly need multi-window work, drawing and handwritten notes, video, gaming, or basic browsing. A tablet optimized for speakers and a kickstand may be more useful for streaming than one whose key advantage is creative software.
- Choose a screen size you will actually use. Compare diagonal size and display type, then consider whether a larger panel earns its added size and carrying burden. A big screen can be valuable for a canvas or multitasking, but it is not automatically the better everyday tablet.
- Check performance for demanding workloads. Match the device tier to your creative apps or games. Marketing descriptions alone do not establish real-world performance; check evidence for the specific model and workload rather than inferring speed from a product’s positioning.
- Price the pen and keyboard experience as a whole. Confirm whether the pen is included, whether a keyboard is optional, and whether the exact cover or keyboard is compatible with the model. Lenovo names the Tab Pen Plus and Wireless Keyboard as compatible with its Tab Plus Gen 2, and says they are sold separately.
- Compare storage you can use. Look at built-in storage and whether the exact model supports microSD expansion. Lenovo lists Tab Plus Gen 2 configurations from 6 GB RAM/128 GB storage to 12 GB/256 GB, with microSD expansion up to 2 TB.
- Verify software support for the exact SKU and region. Lenovo says the Tab Plus Gen 2 is due two OS upgrades through Android 18 and four years of security patches through 2030. Samsung’s cited interim report lists software versions for several models but does not provide a full support-duration policy, so check Samsung’s current terms for the device you are considering.
- Account for your phone and connectivity needs. Consider whether your phone ecosystem matters and whether you need mobile data. Cellular variants and carrier compatibility can vary; verify both for your region rather than assuming a Wi-Fi tablet can be upgraded later.
- Check the local offer, not an old headline price. Configurations, launch timing, promotions, and prices vary by market. Confirm what is currently available and included where you live.
Accessories and software bundles need a compatibility check
Accessories can change a tablet’s usefulness, but compatibility is model-specific. Lenovo identifies the Tab Pen Plus, Wireless Keyboard, and 68W USB-C Wall Charger as compatible with the Tab Plus Gen 2; Lenovo says these accessories are sold separately. Samsung’s US accessory price list from March 2026 covers keyboard covers, protective covers, and screen protectors for named tablet models, and notes prices may change without notice. Use the exact model name when checking fit and local inventory.
Samsung’s US announcement for the S12 series describes creative and productivity software, including Photoshop preloaded on the series, along with promotional trials. Bundled apps and trial terms are time-sensitive and region-dependent, so verify what is included in your local offer rather than assuming the US announcement applies everywhere.
