Linux can work very well on laptops, but compatibility is not an all-or-nothing property: suspend, wireless, fingerprint readers, webcams, graphics acceleration and battery reporting can each depend on the exact laptop, its components, firmware, distribution and kernel. The five areas below are worth checking before installing Linux or troubleshooting a feature that does not behave as expected. They are not a claim that every Linux laptop has these problems.
1. Suspend, lid-close sleep and wake
A laptop may appear to sleep when you close its lid yet fail to wake reliably, or it may not enter the expected sleep state at all. Ubuntu’s guidance notes that incomplete hardware support or drivers can cause suspend or resume problems. The Linux kernel’s system sleep documentation also describes platform firmware as part of ACPI sleep-state transitions. That means behavior can depend on the combination of hardware, drivers and firmware—not simply on Linux as a whole.

Check whether the exact laptop model is reported to suspend and resume reliably with the distribution and kernel version you plan to use. If you already have the laptop, test closing and reopening the lid, waking it with the power button, and whether it resumes with its display and network working. Ubuntu explains the lid-close setting and common considerations in “Why does my computer turn off when I close the lid?”

2. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth working together
Wireless compatibility depends in part on the actual Wi-Fi chipset and its driver. Linux Wireless documents coexistence challenges for some Intel wireless devices, with configuration guidance tied to particular devices and drivers. This is a specific compatibility consideration, not evidence that Linux Wi-Fi is generally unreliable.

When investigating intermittent connections or problems that appear while Bluetooth is active, identify the laptop’s wireless chipset rather than relying on its brand or product family. Then check support and any relevant guidance for that device in the Linux Wireless documentation for iwlwifi. A result for one chipset or driver should not be assumed to apply to another.
3. Fingerprint-reader support
A fingerprint reader is a separate feature to verify, even when the laptop’s other hardware works. Red Hat’s 2025 hardware certification policy lists fingerprint readers as a distinct test area, but that does not establish that readers generally fail on Linux—or confirm support for any particular sensor.

Look for confirmation about the exact reader in the exact laptop model, ideally with the distribution you intend to install. A listing that merely says a laptop has a fingerprint reader does not by itself show that Linux can use it.

Camera support can be device-specific, and a newer platform may have features that are not yet fully supported. Asahi Linux’s M5 Series feature-support table reports status by feature for the Apple Silicon devices it covers; its M5 page lists webcam status, as well as several other features, as TBA for those devices. This is an example of support varying by platform and generation, not a general assessment of webcams on ordinary x86 laptops.

If the webcam matters for calls, check for reports about the precise model and hardware generation, and test the camera with your intended Linux installation when possible. Do not infer its status from the fact that another laptop from the same manufacturer works.

Graphics acceleration and battery monitoring are independent compatibility checks. Red Hat’s 2025 certification policy treats accelerated graphics and battery monitoring as separate test areas. That makes them useful items to verify on a specific laptop; it does not show that Linux lacks either capability across laptops.

For graphics, check whether the exact model and target distribution support the acceleration you need, rather than relying only on whether the display turns on. For battery reporting, check that the operating system can report battery information for that model. If long unplugged use matters, also look for model-specific reports about battery behavior during suspend; a working battery indicator alone does not establish standby performance.

How to check a laptop before you commit
- Find the exact model and components. Record the full laptop model and, where available, the identifiers for its wireless chipset, fingerprint reader, webcam and graphics hardware. A manufacturer name or broad product family is not enough to establish support for every configuration.
- Match reports to your software. Look for evidence that applies to the distribution and kernel release you intend to use. Support can vary with drivers, firmware and device generation, so a report about a different configuration may not answer your question.
- Check each feature you rely on. Verify suspend and wake, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, fingerprint login, webcam, graphics acceleration and battery reporting separately. A laptop can be usable while one of these features needs more work or is unsupported.
- Test the real workflow when possible. Try the laptop with the intended distribution before relying on it for work or travel. Test the functions you actually need, including closing and reopening the lid, using Wi-Fi while Bluetooth is active, and checking camera and battery behavior.
- Check for relevant firmware and project-specific support. Look for updates and documentation that match the exact model. For newer or less conventional hardware, check the project’s feature table rather than assuming upstream or general Linux support covers every component.
