Android tablet settings to change for smoother drawing, lower latency, and palm rejection

For smoother drawing on an Android tablet, start with the active pen and the drawing app’s pen-only or palm-rejection mode. Then select the tablet’s highest supported refresh rate, remove battery and background-work limits while you draw, and test whether navigation gestures are interfering with the canvas. These changes can reduce avoidable delay and accidental marks, but they cannot compensate for a slow digitizer, heavy app rendering, or an app that does not use Android’s low-latency stylus APIs.

Palm rejection is not a single Android-wide switch. Reliable rejection is coordinated between the active-stylus hardware, Android’s input system, and the drawing app. The exact menu names—such as Stylus only, Disable finger drawing, or Palm rejection—vary by tablet model, Android version, and app.

What causes pen lag on an Android tablet?

Perceived pen lag is the total time required for the stylus hardware, Android, the drawing app, and the display pipeline to turn your movement into visible pixels. Android describes this as a combination of hardware and system input processing, application processing, rendering, and compositing. A setting can improve one part of that chain, but no user option can make every tablet and app behave like a purpose-built pen display.

  • Hardware and sampling: The digitizer samples the pen position, pressure, tilt, hover, and orientation. A panel or digitizer with slower sampling creates delay that software settings cannot remove.
  • Android input processing: The operating system converts stylus and touch reports into motion events and applies cancellation and palm-detection behavior.
  • App processing: Brush engines, stabilization, texture effects, layer compositing, and large canvases can consume enough time to make a stroke trail behind the pen.
  • Rendering and display: The app must draw a new frame and the display must present it. A higher refresh rate can make updates appear more fluid, but it does not automatically speed up a slow app.

Android’s motion-prediction library can estimate the next part of a stroke to reduce perceived delay when an app implements it. Android Developers described API capabilities that can reduce inking latency to as low as 4 ms in 2024; that figure is an API capability example, not a promise for every tablet, stylus, or application.

1. Make the app use the active stylus

Begin with the pen that the tablet is designed to recognize as an active stylus. Passive capacitive tips behave like fingers and generally cannot provide the same pressure, tilt, hover, or palm-detection data. Charge or pair the pen if the model requires it, then open the drawing app before testing.

Enable pen-only input in the drawing app

  1. Open the drawing app’s Settings, Preferences, or Input section.
  2. Look for a control named Stylus only, Pen only, Disable finger drawing, Finger painting off, or Palm rejection.
  3. Turn that control on, apply the change, and make a short test stroke with the pen.
  4. Rest your palm on the screen while continuing the stroke. If the canvas still pans or marks appear under your fingers, check whether the app has separate settings for drawing, navigation, and gestures.

Android provides stylus data such as pressure, orientation, tilt, hover, and palm detection, but the app must read and use those inputs correctly. Two apps on the same tablet can therefore show different palm-rejection behavior.

Keep the pen in context before placing your hand

Bring the stylus close to the screen or touch it down before resting your palm. A hovering or touching pen gives the system and app the intended input context. If you put your hand down first, the tablet may initially interpret that contact as an ordinary touch sequence, especially when the app has no pen-only mode.

2. Select the highest supported display refresh rate

Open the tablet’s display settings and choose the highest refresh-rate option available while drawing. The label may be Refresh rate, Motion smoothness, Screen refresh rate, or a similar term under Settings > Display. Some tablets offer an adaptive mode that changes refresh rate automatically; compare it with the fixed highest mode if the app feels inconsistent.

A higher refresh rate can make cursor movement and stroke updates look smoother because the display presents frames more often. It cannot overcome a low-sampling digitizer, a brush engine that takes too long to render, or an app that only produces frames slowly. Refresh-rate changes can also increase power use and heat, so return to an adaptive or lower mode when battery life matters more than drawing response.

3. Remove power and workload bottlenecks

Test latency with the tablet in a cool, lightly loaded state. These are troubleshooting measures based on Android’s latency pipeline, not guaranteed device-wide latency switches.

Allow full performance for the drawing app

  1. Open Settings > Apps and select the drawing app.
  2. Check its battery controls. If Android offers Unrestricted, Don’t optimize, or an equivalent option, use it while drawing if battery-saver restrictions are causing interruptions.
  3. Turn off system-wide battery-saver or extreme-power-saving mode during a latency test.
  4. Return to the canvas and compare a long stroke with the restricted mode.

Battery controls differ by Android version and manufacturer. Do not assume that unrestricted background activity will make every app faster; it simply removes one class of power-management limitation.

Close heavy background work

Pause downloads, video exports, cloud synchronization, games, and other apps that use substantial CPU, GPU, memory, or storage bandwidth. Reopen the drawing app after closing them, then test the same brush and canvas. If the delay disappears, the bottleneck is likely workload-related rather than a palm-rejection setting.

Check temperature

When a tablet becomes hot, its system may reduce processor or graphics performance to control temperature. Move to a cooler surface, remove a heat-trapping case temporarily, stop charging if practical, and wait for the tablet to cool before comparing strokes. A drawing glove or a refresh-rate change cannot correct thermal throttling.

4. Stop navigation gestures from moving the canvas

Full-screen drawing apps place the canvas close to the screen edges, where Android navigation gestures also operate. A bottom or side swipe can therefore be interpreted as a navigation command or as a canvas gesture.

Try three-button navigation

  1. Open Settings > System > Navigation mode or the equivalent navigation section on your tablet.
  2. Select 3-button navigation instead of gesture navigation.
  3. Reopen the drawing app and test strokes that previously began near the bottom or side edge.

If three-button navigation fixes the problem, the issue was an edge-gesture conflict rather than pen latency. If you prefer gesture navigation, keep important strokes away from the gesture edges when possible, or use the app’s canvas-margin and edge-protection options if it provides them.

5. Make palm rejection dependable

Android’s palm-rejection mechanism detects an accidental touch pattern and can notify the app that the previous motion-event sequence should be canceled. Android uses ACTION_CANCEL for this purpose; from Android 13, the FLAG_CANCELED flag can provide additional cancellation information. The app still has to handle those signals correctly.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Use the app’s own rejection mode first

When an app offers a pen-only or stylus-priority mode, enable it rather than relying solely on system behavior. App-level modes can prevent finger touches from painting while still allowing deliberate two-finger gestures for pan or zoom. Some apps expose separate toggles for Finger gestures, Touch to draw, and Navigation with fingers; configure each one according to how you work.

Distinguish accidental marks from accidental panning

  • Marks appear under your palm: Enable pen-only input or disable finger drawing in the app.
  • The canvas moves or zooms: Disable touch navigation, change navigation mode, or keep the canvas away from system gesture edges.
  • The pen stops when your hand lands: Check that the active pen is hovering or touching first and that the app supports the tablet’s stylus protocol.
  • Rejection works in one app but not another: The difference is likely app input handling, not a universal Android setting.

6. Use low-latency rendering features when the app supports them

Android exposes APIs for efficient stylus input and motion prediction, but these capabilities must be implemented by the app. A user cannot add motion prediction, faster rendering, or a specialized inking pipeline through a refresh-rate or palm-rejection toggle.

If an app has a performance or latency preference, choose its low-latency option and reduce expensive brush features for testing. Stabilization, long stroke smoothing, complex texture, live effects, and very large documents can all increase the time between input and display. Change one option at a time so you can identify which feature affects response.

Symptom-based troubleshooting

What you notice Most relevant cause First fixes to try
The stroke consistently trails the pen Hardware sampling, app processing, or rendering delay Use the highest supported refresh rate, close heavy background apps, cool the tablet, and test a simpler brush or smaller canvas.
Your palm creates dots or lines App is accepting finger input Enable Stylus only, Pen only, or Disable finger drawing; put the pen near the screen before resting your hand.
The canvas pans when your hand reaches an edge Navigation gesture conflict Try three-button navigation or keep the canvas away from gesture edges.
Pen response worsens after extended use Thermal or power-management throttling Disable battery-saver restrictions for the app, close background workloads, and let the tablet cool.
One drawing app feels fine and another feels slow Different app rendering or stylus implementation Compare input settings, brush complexity, stabilization, and any low-latency option in each app.

Should you wear a drawing glove?

An artist drawing glove is optional contact-control equipment. It can reduce friction between your hand and the glass and may reduce incidental palm contact, which can make long sessions more comfortable. It does not increase digitizer sampling, shorten Android input processing, accelerate app rendering, or raise the display refresh rate.

Use a glove after configuring pen-only input and navigation behavior, not as a substitute for them. If the glove seems to make rejection worse, check that its edge is not triggering a screen gesture and that the app still receives the active pen correctly.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Charge or pair the active stylus and confirm that pressure responds in the drawing app.
  2. Enable the app’s pen-only, stylus-only, or palm-rejection setting.
  3. Hover or touch the pen first, then place your palm on the screen.
  4. Choose the highest supported refresh rate and compare it with adaptive mode.
  5. Turn off battery-saver restrictions for the drawing app during the test.
  6. Close heavy background apps and stop downloads or sync jobs.
  7. Repeat the test after the tablet cools if it was warm.
  8. Switch from gesture navigation to three-button navigation if edge swipes move the canvas.
  9. Reduce expensive brush, stabilization, or document settings if only complex work lags.
  10. Test the same stroke in another drawing app to separate tablet behavior from app behavior.

The practical limit is set by the slowest part of the input-to-display chain. Android supports the building blocks—pressure, tilt, hover, palm detection, cancellation, and motion prediction—but the tablet hardware, operating system configuration, and drawing app must work together to deliver a smooth stroke.
